I am a farangi who has been married to a Persian for a very long time. We always have a goldfish in a bowl on our sofreh; it's supposed to jump out of the water when the new year arrives. Much like the egg turning, I've never seen it happen. We also always have sombol (hyacinth) and color our eggs like Easter eggs.

One of my exes was Jewish and this reminds me of a mix of Pesach (Passover) and Tu’Bshvat. In Passover traditions you’re supposed to clean out the house with a feather, which symbolizes the level of fine detail of cleaning. All the old bread has to be given to charity. And in Tu’Bshvat you have a focus on fruits, so I may get this wrong but I believe it was four fruit types- hard on the outside/soft on the inside, soft on the outside/hard on the inside, soft on both (?) inside/outside, and hard on both inside and outside (I’m probably goying this up…). But, like, nuts with hard shells would be soft on the inside and hard on the outside I think, and pomegranite seeds were hard on the inside but soft on the outside. It also kind of overlaps with some Easter stuff, I think especially the grass baskets and the eggs. Really interesting how universal human traditions are.

Excellent video! My husband is Persian, and I totally relate to your husband :) I'm trying to learn Farsi, too. My husband mentioned a phrase he hears from his relatives instead of "deed o baz dee". He said he always hears "Seez-deh badahr." What does that mean exactly?

we celebrate the first day of spring hints nowruz (new day) and its philosophy is very simple, usually in spring plants come alive again and some animals wake up, so it's a celebration for nature
@jamesjoon
@jamesjoon 6 жыл бұрын
it has to do with the church and the U.S. govt trying to get the calendars in sync. It's the same reason we have April fools day. Google what is April fools day and you'll get a pretty good explanation.
