How we FEED OUR FAMILY off the grid - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 273

Are you ready for some spear fishing, catch and cook action from the largest swimming pool on earth?!?
We wake up to find Delos anchored in perfect calm conditions and decide to take our dinghy Maggie around to the normally rough and windy side of the island to go food shopping for the week. This is our version of the supermarket, but WAY WAY more fun! Within a few hours of spear fishing I have enough lobster, conch, and fish for our little family to last for days. We proceed to go on a sea food eating extravaganza dreaming up delicious catch and cook recipes that delight our taste buds. It's not all fun and games though as in the middle of the night a sudden wind shift puts Delos on a lee shore and we find our selves bashing the keel against the bottom. A middle of the night move your house drill is required to get us back to deeper water and safety!

Okay, here's a hint for conch prep! Don't beat on or attack the shell, it makes them tighten up and they get tough. Instead, after a quick rinse, put them in the freezer for a few hours, take them out and the foot will be exposed, just hang it by the foot, and as it thaws the conch slides easily out of the shell. You will still have to tenderize because they are just tough anyway, but not as much and you now have a beautiful undamaged shell.

This show has turned into a show about the child. Before it was about adventure and sailing. Dont get me wrong, she is cute as a button but all the viewers subscribed for the adventure over the years. What a fun adventure. FYI avocados will keep significantly longer if refrigerated. Have you ever thought of using the whisker poles with a large flat object hung in the water as stabilizers when at anchor. I used to fish on the B.C. coast and we had them for very rough weather, we would use them mostly under power but a few times while at anchor.

Yes Kaza, babies take a lot of time. Once they start walking they take a lot of your eyes meaning you have to watch them. Then they start becoming more independent and you will have more free time. You will love it.

you should try this recipe: layer of lobster, layer of sliced onion, layer of sliced piman/paprika, layer of sliced tomate, coconut milk and some fresh coriander, not a lot. all the vegetables thin sliced as possible. a little salt and little pepper. cook with the lid for 15~20minutes low fire after it first boils. the first layer, you can use not only lobster, but chunks of fish meat and shrimps as well.

Everybody I have talked to with this experience tells me that having several kids is way easier than having one kid, because they take care of themselves. So I recommend having at least 3 or 4. It's counterintuitive but it's true. It also makes everything better, and every day feels like a party with your very best and favorite people there.

Alright, you guys are just showing off now. You make my mouth water every time I watch you catch a lobster. Really cute baby folks. They are a blast when they get to 7-8 months old. When you go for there belly they can crawl to try and not be caught. So precious at that age. In the last video, I was so jealous of that wonderful dish you did. Remember the old RIB(s)? Always leaking, always half deflated every time they wanted to use it. Not many cruisers use a full aluminum hard dinghy, but it's turned out to be one of the most reliable pieces of equipment on the boat.

I got to know salina salt ponds well on South Caicos (what used to be part of The Bahamas) The history in these parts is incredible - you've got to remember 150 years ago salt was the primary food preservation method...these salt ponds were a huge financial asset. Snorkeling at the mouth of the South Caicos harbor you could see these absolutely massive British naval guns that used to detur any would-be pirates!

Kazza it's great that Brian appreciates your focus time, allowing you to work uninterruptedly on your editing. In a modern work at home office our SO's should respect the need for focus time. I'm settling in for what looks like a permanent work at home option, and why then have an expensive house in stead of an expensive sailboat? If Elon gets his way we all should have global high speed internet soon and what then is tying me to stay ashore? I'll guess there could be some awkward working hours to align with my coworkers unless i deviate more than ±3h CET, which rules out a lot of really cool places... Stay safe friends!

Hi Capt. Brain. I would like to share a knowledge with you. If your anchor ( chain ) direction is your port or straboard side with near 90 degree, it means your vessel is dragging. As I saw, you thought that was about current direction. if your heading is not at the direction ( nearly - 5-10 degree) which is wind is coming, ( while you are at anchor ) , it means your anchor dregging ( moving at the bottom ) Best regards ...

Old school Mediterranean-islander recipe for lobster! Chop the onion and fried it on vegetable oil. Add white wine after onion catches light brown colour. Let the wine on fire for 10 min. Than add tomato salsa. Cook it and mix it 15 to 30 min than add choped lobster on pieces. (Not just clean meat). With 'bones' together. Add salt,peper,litlle bit of a water;(to cover the lobster) cover it up and let it cook for 30 to 45 min. on the small fire without mixing it. If you want. You just can shake the pot on the stove. In another pot cook pasta (spagethi) put it on the plate,put some butter on the warm pasta,and cover whole plate of pasta with lobster souce and pieces. Put some parmmegiano cheese over all and few leafs od basilic on the top! That's it! You'll thank me later! :) since you don't sail to Mediterranean sea. At least enjoy our specialities!
