Having served in the Navy, I discovered I absolutely have zero interest in ever sailing, LOL. However, I LOVE your sailing series. I discovered you reseraching motorhome mpg curious about getting an appropriately sized RV vs being concerned about fuel (gas vs diesel) consumption and the costs, etc. I love dogs and I love the land, mountains, etc. Great job improving your production quality and in my little opinion am valuing your more relatable content. I can see how RVing helped you prepare for your longer passages at sea for preparedness. Best of luck in your continued adventures and thank you for sharing so much great content.

It might be a bit of "old school" but using a HF/SSB and a Practor Modem always works for me. You can also get weather data right onto your laptop. I will have this as my main system when I buy my next big boat. But do like the idea of the wi-fi boosters in a anchorage with a town.

So I follow a bunch of sailing channels, and I can honestly say I have never seen one of your videos until now. With this one video it has answered a lot of my questions I have always thought. As an “I.T.” guy when you speak of redundancy, we live by it. It’s great to see that in the sailing community as well. Some may argue, but when we are talking about lives, it’s good to be connected and to have a backup. Getting a thumbs up from me and a new subscriber.

The Iridium Constellation is moving all the time, it isn’t in a fixed geostationary orbit like most communication satellites, so if you are moving and the satellite doesn’t hand you off to the next satellite that it is supposed to, as quickly or efficiently, a call will be dropped...hopefully their new satellites will do this less often...the last batch of the new Iridium Next Satellites are being launched in December if I remember correctly and hopefully that will improve connectivity...this was an interesting video, by the way, good job as always...
@AndrewTubbiolo
@AndrewTubbiolo 6 жыл бұрын
They describe a delay like I've experience on an inmarssat phone. Is Iridium shunting calls to geo birds and then downlinking for non premium calls?
@marksmadhousemetaphysicalm2938
@marksmadhousemetaphysicalm2938 6 жыл бұрын
No, but they have to bounce the calls from bird to bird to a gateway in Phoenix Arizona and then it hits the POTS...which definitely puts major lag in there, Inmarsat is just one up and down bounce to their gate, but its 50,000 miles round trip...still, if you have an Iridium call off 3 satellites, because its a call from the Indian Ocean or something that’s a huge distance...and one hell of a lag...🤷‍♂️

You guys make my day. You’re learning so much and you share it with all of us with a smile. Thank you. I’m a lifetime geek and sailor. I learned my navigation using a Sextant; plotting lines of position, while always running a dead reckoning plot. I love today’s world with satellites and affordable navigation equipment, weather equipment, etc. Really appreciated your explanation of how you use Wi-Fi. So cool. Love the cats and wouldn’t mind just leaving them on the table walking around in front of the camera. It’s just fine. Thx

You should always ask to sit nearest to the wifi router. Single degrades with distance, especially with older routers that don't have n or a/c. If you are really brave, ask if you can CAT5 into the router directly.

Pretty cool. I was wondering how you handle internet connectivity in French Poly since I had heard that it's slow and expensive there. By watching one of your early sailing videos, I remember one where Nikki mentioned Iridium-Go and how she needs to read up on how to use it. I think you were still in Dania in that video having the boat worked on. But in later videos you 2 were always looking for a place with wi-fi. So from that I knew that Iridium-Go wasn't great for uploading 1+GB HD videos to KZbin. However I think it's great that you have all those other options that you explained in great detail. I missed your fancy open at the top of this video this week. I have to say, as a video editor myself, your editing has vastly improved. Keep up the great work. Sunday's are great. With regard to your satellite connection dropping out every minute or so it may well be due to the system being one which utilizes low orbit satellites. I have used similar systems in very remote areas and learned that if the satellite your system is connected to passes out of line of sight below the horizon before the next satellite in the sequence has risen above the horizon, then you can lose connectivity.

As someone who manages a wifi network for a huge University and 3 Hospitals you want to find where the wifi access point is located and get as close to it as possible, distance from the AP makes a big difference in what speed rates you connect as. You also want to connect to 5 GHz if available. 2.4 GHz is busier and also only has 3 non overlapping channels (1, 6 and 11) available channels that do not overlap and people do not understand when 2.4 channels overlap they cause interference to the other channels.

Since you guys aren't reinventing the wheel and are going to places other cruisers have been to before (for the most part), I assume you do a little research before you go somewhere or "know people" who give you a head's up what is available before you drop anchor. Hi Nikki and Jason, thanks for all the great info. We love your channel. I wanted to know if you are encoding using HEVC (h. 265) before you upload to KZbin. HEVC is optimized to use about half of the bandwidth of its predecessor as file sizes are smaller. It could end up being a time and money saver, however it may require more rendering time. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what compression and codecs you use. Cheers!

Hey Todd. Nikki and Jason are finding good WiFi in Rarotonga challenging, so they're sometimes having trouble loading comments pages. I copied your question and e-mailed it, and here's Jason's reply: We use h264 and the KZbin export settings in Premiere Pro. The only variable being: if internet is fast and affordable I choose a higher bitrate. Hope that answers the question because it's all Greek to me! Curious Minion

Great video. I use the Garmin on my motorcycle trips. It comes in handy especially when I am riding out of cell phone range.

Very cool vid, thanks for diving in to the technical stuff. Couple things Im inspired to point out - Google Fi blends T-Mobile/Sprint/US Cellular for cell data (but only one at a time) and has great wifi calling/sms compatibility. Sometimes however Fi will decide that good call connection is a higher priority than a marginal data connection and can force you onto a cell carrier that has no data. "Fi Switch" is an app that lets you manually control which carrier it connects to (or just seeing which one you are connected to) so you can explore which cell network has the best for your needs (call vs data). Also take a look at the Calyx Institute - They use the Sprint mobile network and through mobile citizen they can offer truely unlimited data packages for an entire year. Its worth some digging to see if you can find sprint cell service on the coast but even if its only 1/2 the time you're abroad you would have 100+mbps up/down in good areas and Ive run it well over 400gb of data in a single month and never had any issues with the service (some unlimited providers will throttle or flag you for abuse beyond a certain cap, Calyx does not).

I've been wondering how you do this, thanks so much for the tutorial. I've had some pretty hairy experiences overseas trying to get usable wireless signals. Even hotels don't always give good connections. I suppose you have to go for the cyber cafes given your large uploads. However, I've never found a fail-safe option that doesn't break the bank. It comes down to scrounging around. I think your greatest achievement is keeping to your upload schedule.

Just a thought... we have been in some remote places that didn’t even have a restaurant or cars but the local school building had pretty good service and they were more than willing to share. That was only having a few tacos and drinks to share in exchange. Love the information you guys share.

Wow kids! My age is showing when you try to explain all of those communication device options. I'd have to travel with someone a lot younger in order to keep family/friends on top of our travels. BTW, Singa is a real want to be star, with all of the prancing in front of the camera during this taping. Quite vocal as well. Love it!

Great video as always! There is another option for communication, amateur radio or ham radio. You can talk around the world and you can even do digital modes with it. There would be some aspects of it would make it a little less attractive an option. First, you have to be licensed. In the US it is fairly easy to get licensed. But for international travel you typically would have the highest class license your home country offers. (There are three classes in the US.) And when you visit another country you have to apply for a license to operate in that county. It's more a formality but you have to get the approval from the government of the country you want to operate from. I have seen some cruisers using amateur / ham radio set ups on their boats. It looks like Delos uses it for getting weather data in one episode.

Olli K Amateur Radio is certainly an option and the rules are a bit simpler while in international waters where other options are slim (where you simply have to abide by the limits of your home license and those of whichever of the three ITU regions, and their bandplan, you are in), though once within another country’s territorial eaters you must abide that nation’s rules (particularly where reciprocal licensing is afforded) and that requires advance research. HF digital modes and SSB are great for communicating with other amateurs around the world and they can certainly relay messages to friends or family back home (actual phone patches are not so common nowadays, but we still relay messages on request) on your behalf for free and with digital modes it is possible to transmit low resolution images or you can use applications like WinLink to send emails. That said, Amateur Radio is one of those hobbies/services where you get out of it what you put into it which means that to be competent as an operator it is something you must use regularly and invest time into. Also, amateur radio can not be used for profit or commercial purposes, which is something the Wynn’s would have to be careful of since their lifestyle mixes a lot of business with personal. But it is a great backup form of communication that does not depend upon cellular service, Wi-Fi. satellite, etc., and there are millions of operators listening the world over. Plus, the middle of the ocean on a boat is a fantastic place to be operating HF from as a salty ocean provides a great ground plane compared to dry/moist soil. Perhaps the greatest feature is that it gives one something to do to pass the time when in the middle of nowhere. 73 de KW4EK
