In the UK we sit proper exams only three times in school at age 15-16, 16-17 and 17-18 and everyone in the country sits the same exams at the same exact time so it’s fair (depending on what subjects you choose). All the different classes and credits seems confusing and the fact you can do classes that transfer to a university level degree at school when you’re so young is crazy, i love you guys though and i love hearing about your academics, your work ethic is so inspiring🤍

yeah IB is pretty similar to AP. in IB, there are "higher-level" courses and "standard-level" courses and colleges often give credit for higher-level exams.
@maggiehartzler44864 жыл бұрын
I don't have enough good things to say about dual enrollment. I just graduated high school with 41 credit hours to transfer in, and I also plan to graduate college in three years. Doing so will save me literally tens of thousands of dollars. I actually took my classes at a college and I feel that doing so will make the transition from high school to college learning easier. After hearing about the horror stories of AP exams, I am so glad that my school didn't offer them. It boggles my mind that some students enroll in these difficult classes, pay a lot of money to take tests, and might not even end up getting credit for them. For me, dual enrollment was completely free (textbooks included) unless you fail the class, in which you have to pay the full price (incentive lol). If you're given the option/opportunity, I highly recommend dual credit!
@makenziehoman4 жыл бұрын
Maggie Hartzler I 100% agree with you. I just graduated high school with 62 college credits and am transferring an entire degree to my university. I’ve heard horror stories about AP classes too and it makes me so grateful I wasn’t even given them as an option. If you aren’t planning on going to an Ivy or super prestigious college, your credits will transfer pretty well anywhere you choose to go. To anyone wondering, definitely weigh the pros and cons before just choosing AP classes.
@nataliequigs38194 жыл бұрын
My high school didn't offer many college level classes so I had to take APs or IBs. I highly recommend taking advantage of these programs in your school but make sure, they will transfer as credits because the exams are expensive. In my high school, you had to pay for and take the exams if you took the class. Every college is different but I go to a SUNY school and this is how it transferred (28 credits): AP English Language (elective credit - not even general ed.), AP statistics (math general ed.), AP calculus (transfers directly as major requirement often or general ed.), AP economics (micro & macro - directly toward my major, minor, and general ed.), AP computer science principles (elective gredit), and college level Spanish which was taken through a SUNY school though my high school. All counted as 4 credits. I took an IB course in high school but it did not transfer (not even as elective credit). Credits help give you a better time slot for choosing your classes and more difficult high school classes will prepare you better for college so highly recommend taking them!

I had 0 ideas of what I wanted to do career-wise while in high school. I also didn't start college right after high school. A year off ended up going to a few years but everyone is different. I finally started at a local community college. I started part-time for the 1st year so it will take me 3 years there (done with CC in a year) and then 2 years at University. So for me, it's will take 5 years to get that 4 year degree.

I can’t speak for non-Texas public schools but for those schools they’re required to provide college credit for AP exam scores 3+. For stem majors, you’re able to accept credit for core courses to your major, like AP Bio for a Biology major. For my in progress aerospace degree, I was able to accept credit for a year of physics and calculus and go to the higher level courses.
@emmaraine94564 жыл бұрын
the US education system is so confusing... in the UK we do GCSEs in secondary school (age 11-16) which include maths, english and sciences and then we go to sixth form/college (age 16-18) and sit three A-Levels in any subjects we choose (psychology, geography, biology for me). We apply for a course at university (for me geography) and based on our A-Level grades (A* to E) we either get in or don't and then all university courses (apart from medicine/veterinary science/integrated masters) are all just 3 years
@Luu9044 жыл бұрын
Both systems are really confusing, in my country you go to high school (grades 7-11) and you take math, sciencie, social studies, english and spanish all through it until you graduate, take a test similar to an SAT and based on your score and your results from grades 10 and 11 you get a "college score" and you either enter to the course you want or not
@Sarahr989984 жыл бұрын
That sounds infinitely more confusing lol
@lauraireson63584 жыл бұрын
Sarahr98998 The UK is just narrowing down subjects as you get older. You sit core subjects and optionals for GCSE at 16. Then three, usually narrowed down, subjects of your choice at A level at 18. Then usually one of those or something similar for your degree. Your degree is also almost only modules for your specific degree. Such as, I took different elements of psychology for my degree, nothing like english or languages. That’s the traditional route I took anyway.

I was sick of my life so...I went and got British high school English & Math quals then got what is called a college Diploma, which is like senior high school level stuff. From there I went on to TRY a Joint Honours in Physics and Astronomy at university. I thought yeah, a bit of both BUT it turned out I was doing two degrees at once and no elective courses to make up credits, instead I had to do Freshman&Sophomore years compulsery Mathematics. I fluncked almost everything in1st year so repeated it, dropped the Astronomy and did physics on its own. Did not get great grades but passed everthing to scrap a ordinary degree; it took 5 yrs; collapsed in a heap for months after graduating. I think you guys are AMAZING! for doing what you did.

US and European Uni is so different. We do a bachelors in 3 years regular time. Probably due to our highschool being at a much higher level than the US counterpart. how to graduate in 3 years with a 4.0: don't have 2 science majors LOL, but I'm about to be a senior at UMass Amherst (very reputable school) and I'm going to end up with two separate bachelors of science degrees in public health and food science. I came into college with 14 credits (did some AP and some dual enrollment, and my school had IB but I wasn't in it) and have been doing 18-20 credits per semester since entering plus two summer science courses. a lot of my classes run only every other semester so I physically can't graduate early haha. if I hadn't added food science in the middle of my first semester though I easily could've graduated in 3 or 3.5 years as just a public health major. I am also from out of state so if I had gone to a NJ state school (Rutgers, Rowan, TCNJ, etc) I'm sure I could have swayed more AP credits. I currently have a 3.3 GPA (would have been better if biochem and calculus hadn't ruined everything) but if I do well these next two semesters I could potentially get a 3.5 highest possible over my 4 years! For AP's: 5 on AP Lit (transferred as English 1AL requirement), 4 on AP environmental (transferred as biological science), 4 on AP statistics (transferred as quantitative math), dual enrollment English (transferred as freshman English requirement). my 3's on US History and Psychology did not transfer. I got a 31 ACT (which I submitted) and 1290 SAT (which I did not submit) I was also in marching band for my first 2 years, and was also in a service fraternity (Alpha Phi Omega) so I wasn't just studying and stuff all day lol. I don't party/go out often either.

I believe the only reason we were able to take the dual enrollment classes at our high school was because our teachers for those classes were specifically qualified to teach them (i.e. I assume they had to get some sort of license or certification). However, some students in our district and districts around us still went to a local community college for classes they were taking.
