i set up a schedule of Monday is maintenance (deadheading,etc) Wednesday is weed day and Friday is fertilizer. easy to remember because of the day of the week and the first letter.

So glad to find someone else in their seventies trying to continue a garden they started in their 30's. I am definitely going to analyze my yard in terms of zones. I find that I can do the work but I am so much slower than I used to be and I get worried about areas I am not getting to. Focusing on one zone at a time sounds like a life and sanity saver.

This is my second year of enriching my garden with compost. I have discovered one problem with this method of amending the soil though; dormant seeds. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than myself has a remedy for all the unwanted weeds and volunteers. I thought the heat generated in the composter would would kill of most of them, but that has not been my experience.

@@JeannetteShoreland your compost is not heating up enough to kill them. You probably needed more green (nitrogen) in the pile. Pick up a compost thermometer. That'll help you see if it's getting hot enough. If it's not, add more green (until it starts to smell--then add more carbon and water if necessary).

I also use a hand weeder (the kind with the fork on the end) in addition to gloves and kneeling pad. With my clay soil I would never get those taprooted weeds out unless I pry them out with that tool. It's so much easier to keep on it if I just spend 10-20 minutes a day weeding, for sure! Plus it's my after-work stress relief to wander around the garden, pull weeds and do my watering.

I love this level of detail on how you keep up on maintenance! I've been curious about your system. My friend who gardens for a living taught me that when you're short on mulch or time to weed, just focus on the corners and edges and it tricks the eye into believing the garden is much more pristine!

I also have a much smaller garden. I have had zones (loosely defined) for a few years now. What really helped me keep the schedule was when I named each garden zone. I have the East garden, Lily hill, you get the idea. It also makes it more fun when I can tell my family that I will be working in the Sunshine garden today. Try it!

@@denisedorsey2889 I've done that recently, too, and I'm presently trying to figure out the name for my newest gardens. Last year, I named one garden after one daughter and another garden after my other daughter. It was a surprise for my older daughter when she came to visit during her layoff during the pandemic. I allowed her to choose some plants to plant in there, both annual and perennial. My other daughter hasn't visited yet so it's a surprise waiting on her when she visits next. In each of their gardens, I have a statue that represents each one of them and their personalities!

I did a “zone” for the inside of my house when I had small children. I had certain chores I would do on specific days and then I wouldn’t get overwhelmed if everything didn’t get done every day. I really does free up the mind!

Hi Laura, love your videos; I’m learning so much! Two questions: 1. I was taught to leave day lilies alone until the bloom stalks dried out and could be pulled by hand (usually mid-August here in MA - Zone 5) and wait again until later in the season (Sept/Oct) for the leaves to be dry enough to be pulled by hand, but you trimmed yours. Besides the look of it, is there benefit to cutting back vs waiting to pull? 2. I always thought irises had to be cut back in a fan at the end of the season but I see you are handling irises differently. Can you discuss or make a video about day lilies and irises, especially after blooming? Thanks!

Great information! I did this as well, when you first demonstrated how it works. It is so helpful and does allow a little rest and breathing room in the garden from time to time. I vaguely remember you mentioning all the neighbors bringing their plant matter to the new property so as to mix it with the soil. We dig holes near shrubs or in vacant places on flower beds, throw compost material there and cover it with soil back. It deteriorates by itself without further actions on our part. There are plenty of worms in those areas afterwards

For weeding, I've found hoes work wonders. I try to aim for a little lower on the ground so that I can get the roots out as well. If I have a huge area to weed, my hoe is my best friend. I also read in the book "Start with the Soil" by Grace Greshuny that, "The simple process of hoeing your garden gives a boost to bacteria by brining in air. As the bacteria go to work mineralizing humus in the soil, your plants get an extra dose of nutrients to speed up sluggish growth." Highly recommend that book if you want to deepen your understanding of what's going on underground in your garden 😊

Laura, YES! This absolutely works. I do this as a living. I treat each customers yard as a zone. I can do each clients yard in an hour. Once a week. I call this a Maintenance Program. I weed, trim, check for disease, deadhead, etc. I’m sending this video to my customers. You explain it so much better than I do.

I have been trying to do something similar in my garden. Things have gotten out of control because we had so much rain earlier in the season. It gets really muddy and you can't even get in there. Plus I have a full time job, so there are only certain times of day I am free to work in the garden. Hard to work around the weather! But things are getting better. We just took some time off to do a big catch up weed and volunteer tree removal, so that should help get a fresh start at it! Next year, I will try to stay ahead!

I almost dread going outside, especially right now, we've been dealing with heat and drought so there is so much 'out there' that is begging to be done that I go out with the intention of tackling one job but find myself wandering around from place to place trying to do everything and not really finishing anything and I end up going in not feeling like I accomplished much of anything! If everyone did this to their gardens they would be able to keep up on weeding so easily! It was a game changer when I started going out and just bending like 10 minutes A-day pulling up all the weeds as soon as they came up. It might take you an hour a day if you had a huge garden but for most of us it would just take us a few minutes a day to weed, and then maybe an hour a week for other maintenence

Years ago, someone told me he pulls just 20 weeds a day. Sounds good, but I either lose count or get so caught up in removing weeds I fill a bucket. Then days/weeks go by before I'm in the mood to pull more weeds and by then they've grown massively.

But, just watching you work reminds me that it's not so bad once you get started, even in 100-degree heat. I literally got scared like I was watching a horror movie when you played with that spider web. I do not know how you do that! I have discovered a love for gardening thanks to your videos, but my irrational fear of spiders is still something I really struggle with when working in my space.

HAHA ! Yees I have the same feeling but mine is with small reptiles (salamanders and little lizards) I just...😅 they freak me out so much. We also have some frogs who clearly can jump like nobody’s business, but I get more freaked out by the little lizards and salamanders for whatever reason. 😅😅😅

I am getting to work on zoning my garden and my HOUSE! Game changer! You’ve mentioned this so many times, but I never thought to apply it to my entire home & garden until today while listening to you talk. Omg Laura I am SO HARDHEADED, what the heck. I’ve been watching you for years and never once thought my property would work with a zone system but it finally took THIS video for me to get it through my head that my “high, medium, low priority system” just isn’t cutting it. I’m constantly stressed out about being stretched too thin across several areas and this zone system fixes that.... like idk why all this time I kept telling myself “oh but I only have a small yard, zones are for big properties” noooooooo. Zones are for anybody who dreams big enough to have several elaborate planting areas!! Omg thank you for doing this video even though it seems so simple to you to explain! 💜💙💚💛

Really appreciated the break down of the maintenance of such a large garden space. And I can downsize the theory to my smaller garden or others can size up appropriately! And "insects and weeds, then deadheading us next" is a simple bare minimum goal for maintenance, when it's often daunting. So thank you!

Laura, how do y’all cut the grass underneath your plants that are spilling over the flower beds? I have always cut my plants either with the weed eater or mower, I’ve had to start getting on the ground with scissors & it’s such a pain! 🤦🏻‍♀️

I just ordered some garden stakes/supports from Gardener's Supply (on sale now, but back ordered). Next year I'll preemptively get them in place so my phlox and balloon flowers don't flop onto the lawn.

@@Edu_Kate Last week, when I picked up an order at Walmart, I strolled thru their garden center, I'm always looking for bargains. Lucky for me, they had 2-packs of 4 ft long green steel stakes on clearance for 10 cents per pack, so I bought all 17 packs! I'm going to use these, along with some low green mesh fencing, to hold back some overly rambunctious plants. This should help keep the flowers in their beds, and I can use it to keep the rabbits out this winter.

Hi Laura, Aron, Benjamin and fellow gardening friends. So inspirational! I can vouch for Laura's zone plan as I started to do it on her recommendation this year. The weeds do stay under control and the time that I used to spend hacking out tall weeds I now spend enjoying my garden (after finishing that day's zone). My husband now joins me and does the watering and pruning which is a huge help. Plus it's fun planning, buying plants and watching our garden grow. Beth Augustine, I was going to ask the same thing! I moved into this house 7 years ago and have old irises. I did watch a video way back when and moved some around the garden that bloomed the following year. Just finding out the the “old” bloom doesn’t rebloom and would like further care instructions myself.

Usually when the foliage is died back, so you know the bulb has pulled all the energy from the leaves. 😊

Samantha B , I do cut the leaves back about this time into the inverted “v” shape. I was looking for more information as it relates to the rhizomes because these are just so old and overgrown that they don’t do much of anything.

For the fastest turnaround on compost, everything should be shredded down first. Otherwise, you're gonna wait at least an entire year before you see any usable compost.

@@angiezavacky4347 I take my material to my compost area, arrange it in a fairly long, low pile and go over it with my mulching mower on the highest setting. If it needs more shredding, I lower the mower height and go over it again until I have it chopped enough. Then I rake it up and mix it in to the compost heap.

@@HappyCats17 yeah, but she has black widow spiders. Yikes! We have spiders ('cause they eat pests), but I don't think NJ has many venomous spiders. (I think there are only about four species we have to be worried about.)

@@Bamboo4U2 ha, we have black widows, tarantulas and brown recluse here. I see dead brown recluses in our house fairly regularly, but no live ones so far. I was bit by a black widow years ago, didn't feel anything, but I saw it on my arm. Started hurting and swelling a few hours later. Had some mild stomach cramps too, but honestly I am far more afraid of hornets! We have a lot of venomous snakes here but you can't let that make you a prisoner in your house. My California born husband is extremely snake-phobic, but he's usually on some sort of motorized vehicle which scares them off. 😉
