Seriously, we don't have tomato gravy in Wisconsin. Some Italians from Chicago call the spaghetti sauce "Sunday gravy". Other than that, it is completely foreign. It looks outstanding, though and I would gratefully clean my plate!

@@bobvancevance701 Too young? People have been here making their own way since 1500’s continuously. How many hundreds of years does it take to make a tradition? My mother’s side of my family was here before the Europeans ever found this land. I am a registered tribal member of the Choctaw Indian Nation, we have dishes that we still cook on our reservations.. I am sure those may have traditions and maybe some were passed on to make modern dishes that is normal to The whole North American continent The food is actually pretty good, I doubt you have ever had any traditional southern cooking, so your opinion does not matter.

This was really nice to see your version of tomato gravy. I've lived down south, two different states Midwest two different states, but I was reared in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Lancaster, county. Its a PA dutch staple. My mama was Pa. Dutch my Papa was 1st generation italian. I feel I had the best of both worlds. If you have the core ingredients which are a: Fat Flour Tomatoes Milk You can make tomato gravy. You can add what you want and eat it on whatever you want, thats your personal choice. I now live in Missouri. My husband is from Iowa. He never heard of it but I made him the Pa Dutch style and he loves it. TRY IT, ADD WHAT YOU WANT, AND MAKE IT YOUR OWN🍅x

One of my most favorite dishes is to make tomato gravy. I was raised in a blended family, one half being Cajun and the other half backwoods country. In my mind, there is no better combination than these two combined. I learned to make my roux, using saved bacon fat, as dark as possible before adding tomatoes and water only. Salt and pepper to taste. Fresh tomatoes really bring that tomato deliciousness up a to a whole different flavor level. This is served over fresh from the oven homemade buttermilk biscuits. This is one of the things my kids ask for after all these years. You are right, comfort food at its finest.

My ex's grandmother his family was from Pennsylvania Pennsylvania Dutch (German) taught me how to make tomato gravy when I was 19. I love it made with fresh garden tomatoes. I don't add onions because I don't like them. I use fresh ripe garden tomatoes, butter, flour and a bit of cornstarch, milk, salt, a lot of pepper and a tiny bit of sugar. It's Soo good over biscuits or toast. It's quick to cook so it's a great quick breakfast on a summer day. I used to make it for lunch a lot too decades ago when I had a huge garden and an abundance of tomatoes. I have no tomatoes in the house now or I'd fix some today! I'm old now and live in town, sure do miss rural life and my garden. The town I live in is overrun with rabbits and squirrels they even came up on my deck and ate the plants I had in planters!

My parents grew up in the hills of Kentucky, grew up eating our form of tomato gravy. We didn’t add any cream or milk. It was bacon grease, onion’s, celery and stewed tomatoes. That’s it. It was the best thing on meatloaf and rice. My husband had never had it until I cooked it for him, he loved it. When I lost him in 2007, I craved tomato gravy and rice. That was almost all I ate for about 6 months. I hope people give it a try you’ll be surprised how wonderful it is and simple.

I love Southern people. I love their cooking. I love their values. But Jesus my Lord I HATE HEAT ! I born in the far north country. I pray for summer to end. I love my temperatures below fifty. I really don't mind -10 if it isn't windy. I have and suspect I can handle -20 -30. Still I love Southern folks.

I’m 46- born raised rurally north of Nashville Tennessee USA(it’s our closest big city) *Gravy Explained for my area* We had tomato gravy made from homemade canned tomato’s as a kid and as an adult, tinned tomatoes. It was for breakfast and went with fried corn and bacon 🌽 🥓 and homemade biscuits. It was a trio of enjoyed flavours and I absolutely LOVE IT! I still have to have these 3 together when gardens are coming in Yes- we also had regular bacon gravy, sausage gravy, white gravy, chicken gravy, turkey gravy, pork gravy and CHOCOLATE gravy. Chocolate gravy was a way for my grandmother to give 11 kiddos a sweet treat and use up leftover biscuits. I grew up in an area where we had fresh biscuits with every meal, and so having multiple types of gravy was just a way to feed a lot of loved ones. Typical daily gravy for those who think this or chocolate was common was more like- bacon grease browned till it turned peanut butter in color and then water or milk added- most often - water because milk was expensive. Nowadays-tomato or chocolate gravy is a treat for holidays. Life as a kiddo example: we’d be sitting around at night saying to mama, “I wish we had somethin’ sweet to eat mama.” And she’s tease us and take a pretend nibble of us and say 😋 yummy - you’re sweet!!! And we’d say nooooo maaaaamaaaa... something real!! 🤭 😂 And she’s go whip up something from pantry staples like chocolate gravy ;)

I am from the south...NEVER heard of tomato gravy! Total disgrace for them to have kept that from me! However, my mom used to make POTATO gravy! Same recipe, same method but sliced potatoes instead of tomatoes. I realize it sounds weird, but it is comfort food for me and mine. (Haven't had it in 30 years, just comforted thinking about it!) Thanks Whipperwill!

I’ve lived in Texas over 50 years and have never heard of tomato gravy. Oh my! Sounds & looks so unbelievably good & I’m so hungry for home grown tomatoes. Currently I live in desert of West Texas and haven’t had luck growing tomatoes in this sandy, hot area. Believe me! I’ll keep trying.....I miss gardening and canning...p.s. I’ve been watching your channel for about a year and it’s my favorite....I taught nearly 40 years but had to retire due to health...God’s always brings blessings in every situation.... It’s only because of being so ill that I began watching tv/KZbin and found such kind people (you & mr. brown are my #1)....oh, lori...you have gotten me through some very difficult times .... I could feel it...ya’lls Godliness....your gentle, kind spirit comes through each video...please thank mr. brown also for sharing the Bible and prayers he’s said....God’s definitely working thru ya’ll! P.s. I don’t comment because I know you get so many and you are so busy but I just had to write and tell you the blessing you’ve been for me....thank you and may God continue to guide you & bless you and mr. brown

Hey y'all, just found your channel. Born n raised in the south (east coast side) and have never heard of this. Sausage gravy, sawmill gravy, milk gravy, white gravy, brown gravy, cornstarch gravy .... every meat you can fry up - gravy ... but never tomato gravy. I'll have to ask my mother in law about it. They grew up on a lot of the Great Depression/world war era foods -- which this kinda sounds like to me would/could have come from that era when ppl still grew and canned their own food (guess why you can use fresh or canned), but meat was scares. I can't wait to peruse your playlist! Ain't nutt'n like listening to God-lovin' -southern drawl talkin' - g'ud o'le c'un'try folks - speakin' on country ways to warm the o'le heart!! Thank ya kindly.

Have you ever had tomcat or beartom gravy! It’s made w/cornmeal instead of flour. I used to serve it w/catfish on Friday nights at my restaurant. It’s actually supposed to be made w/yellow tomato juice. My granny used to cannit special for fish fries. It’s amazing w/fish, slaw & hush puppies

I'm from Arkansas,& have lived in trx & Oklahoma, however i had not heard of tomato gravy til last 2-3yrs. My grandmother used to make breaded tomatoes which were good. I wasn't used to that either since my mother didn't make it. She would open jar of tomatoes, salt, pepper,& bacon grease. Then just break up bread into it,heat & serve. You could use butter instead of grease. I had never heard of chocolate gravy either til last few yrs.

That would be our Supper many a day when I was growing up! With six kids growing up, my Moma would make just biscuits and a big pan of Tomato Gravy! Especially2-3 days before a payday! We never knew We were poor until we grew up and she taught us how to stretch a dollar!

Mom would flour, 1/2" sliced tomato, salt & pepper. Fry in lard, place on paper lined baking sheets. Cut up smaller tomato pieces , place lard and flour in frying, cook until browned, add chopped tomatoes, then add milk to thin the flour & lard to make "gravy" . Pour over fried tomatoes. Served with corn on the cob and cucumber salad!!!!

My grandmother started this recipe of creamed tomatoes and biscuits but she never used grease or onions she started it out with homemade canned tomatoes and a large cooker she got them to boil added a cold milk and flour rue mixed in a pint jar with a lid 1qt home canned tomatoes 🍅 ( 1c cold milk + 1/4 cup AP flour) ***This recipe can be doubled*** and Shake real hard to get out all the lumps mostly, poured into the boiling tomatoes with a whisk turn down to simmer add salt and pepper cook for 5 to 7 minutes until desired thickness is reached stirring constantly. Serve with butter and sugar over biscuits as a breakfast meal. This has been a family tradition for over 80 years. Always used home canned tomatoes or tomato juice. And best with homemade buttermilk biscuits! 😋😋😋🍽️🍽️🍽️
