One trick to do water is to make it clear (like water duh) and make a displaced ocean floor object with noises of different colors (like one you used in volume shader) I’ve had great results using this technique. But vdms are a must
@BlauwFilms Жыл бұрын
Ohh! That's a really cool workflow. Hadn't thought of that before. Will give this a try as well. Thanks!

amazing tutorial! I followd the steps but i think the beginning looks different... Could you upload the project files without the boat of course?

Hey @MeikeiArtworks, Thanks so much! I've been away for a bit. Yes, absolutely: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xN_S-A-VmOYsYQf6VSKDthHuFbi2x9nn?usp=sharing There are two versions of the setup in there :) Did you end up figuring it out? What did the issue look like? Cheers, Leo

Regarding Unreal Engine - Displacement was deprecated in version 5, probably because of Nanite (It enables the use of hi-poly objects). UE 4.27 was the last version where we could use displacement maps, and even than I'm pretty sure it was regular maps and not VDM
@BlauwFilms Жыл бұрын
Ahh that makes a lot of sense! Good to hear that Nanite actually works the way they advertised it :)

they added nanite displacement now

Is there any way to export a vdm from a deformed plane in cinema? I'm curious how you made yours
@BlauwFilms9 ай бұрын
Hey @JanReuser! Just getting back to your comment now. I don't think so actually. If you have a deformed plane it will always give you a Black to White map. But you want to have a colored XYZ map. Exporting VDM from ZBrush is the most straight forward method: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXKmnqiOqNSWaZI In the example from the tutorial I used a map that was made in ZBrush by someone from the Arnold team. What are you trying to make? Cheers, Leo
@JanReuser9 ай бұрын
Thanks@@BlauwFilms for the reply! Yea I 've searched some tips but couldn't find a way to do it either. There are some plugins for blender that come close, but I didn't get it to work correctly. I'll try and see if I can use the zbrush method next.

What about the water spray? What about foam? And sorry - I don't mean to be a neg on this, the VDM stuff is really interesting.
@BlauwFilms Жыл бұрын
Hahah no worries! In this render the water spray and foam is composited in After Effects + Photoshop. I will cover it another tutorial as there are some nice masking techniques. I’m working with a friend on a particle sim for the water but that will be in a later stage once we have all the final assets :)

@@BlauwFilms - Thanks guys, I've tried RealFlow in the past and more recently (and with more success!) X-Particles. It's a tough one to sim I find, so I'm always interested how people actually sim a ship/boat wake successfully.
@BlauwFilms Жыл бұрын
@@baileycs1514 Yess, I agree. It's so tricky! I've always wanted to try RealFlow but it seems like it's not as versatile as I'd hoped it to be. We're currently giving Houdini a try :)
