This is by far one of the best videos XO has put out. Medical knowledge while exploring is literally priceless. I would recommend is that every vehicle have a large med bag like the one you showed (which was great by the way) as well as each individual person in the party having their own personal small pack with a mix of light and heavy trauma items. Also, be sure to clearly mark the purpose of medications and their expiration dates on them, as well as keeping them up to date. Yes, they can still be used after their "expiration date", but they do lose their effectiveness as the chemical compounds begin to deteriorate.

Great video. Proper emergency medical training is something that is often forgotten but should be the top of the list.

CAT Tourniquets! Tourniquets are an absolute must in every kit. I highly suggest getting as many as you can pack away. Two per limb is a good starting number to pack up. Tourniquets, especially CAT, have been proven in the battlefield over and over. CAT has a 100 percent success rate when applied correctly. So, get them, and train, train, and train some more. Thanks for the videos!

Also highly recommend the new SOF-TW tourniquets. www.tacmedsolutions.com/product/sof-tactical-tourniquet-wide/

Kolby Musick yep cats are junk. Go with the softwides. Go to for special operations. Takes the Velcro out so it's much faster.

1southernpride1 SOF-T'S are great, when applied to a leg. extremely difficult to apply to your own arm. can it be done, sure. But, after crucial time has gone by and blood has left the body that you'll never get back.
@1southernpride1
@1southernpride1 8 жыл бұрын
Kolby Musick how so? We train daily with them and have no problem to applying them to arms or any other limb. Much easier that the Cat.
@kylewlewis

They are both good tourniquets. The SOF has a metal windless, wider constricting band, and an easy metal clip for application, all of which are weaknesses of the CAT.

You mentioned the litter for back injuries, a soft litter like that can cause much more damage then good to someone with spine and/or neck injurie without proper immobilization to a ridged back board and the use of a c collar or x brace. I'd hate to see someone paralyzed unnecessarily. Love the videos!

First I want to compliment you guys on having medical equipment. I'm a medic for a major city and I was surprised and glad to see you guys went through the wilderness EMT training and helped with T5 mission. I'm not sure what you exactly have but I would recommend getting a few SOF-T tourniquets, which I believe to be the best and research has supported(don't buy rubber tourniquets). Also quick clot to stop major bleeding, major bleeding is the number 1 most preventable death with trauma. Do not purchase the powder quick clot as environmental changes make application difficult. If you don't have a text book or want a text book to read try PHTLS Military Edition (get the latest version). It maybe alittle intimidating but it has a lot of great information on trauma, injury recognition, care and research data. I cringed alittle when you said collapsed lung, please always educate yourself on signs/symptoms and injury presentation so you don't make an easy situation worse because a good deed went astray. Great videos, I'm hooked!

Id recommend having cervical collars and have training for it its a great tool and save alot of spinal injuries to the neck. Id say a immobilizing mattress if you have the money for it but maybe its to overkill.

Hey so something I learned early in my expedition experience is the importance of sharing the location where one stores their med kit. It was a buddy of mine who taught me that the number-one thing you should know about the people you travel with is where they hide their spare key, the number-two thing you should know is where they store their med kit. Hope this helps :)

Great video! I have a couple questions 1) Where did you guys/gals take your Wilderness Responder training at? I have seen a few online that appear to be popular. 2) Which would you recommend more the first responder or the basic wilderness training? I was an EMT for a few years, but I would be rusty if some medical emergency would happen while on the trail. Thanks for your feedback and keep up the great videos, I cannot wait til your groups next adventure!

We use Aerie Backcountry Medicine. www.aeriemedicine.com/ I recommend the wilderness first responder(WFR). You get all of your first responder training implemented into the wilderness setting. Jeff

Another tip to add it's important before any longer trips to ensure that your meds, antibiotics, antiseptic etc have not expired. Putting an expired antiseptic could be worse than no antiseptic.

Highly recommend you guys get some tourniquets. The old wives tale myths that peoples limbs will fall off and crap like that is BS. Get some tourniquets and if you're looking at major, uncontrolled bleeds, slap a tourniquet on and you're going to save buddy's life. Other than that, looks like you guys have a pretty comprehensive setup and the training to go with it. Nice!

Hey Jeff..this is outside your topic on this video but just curious. What is the most common part or parts of a vehicle that breaks down when off-roading? If there is one?
@ExpeditionOverland

Joel,Sway bar links and CV axels are pretty common parts to fail. Of course this is a direct correlation to ones driving style but they are week points. Jeff

1southernpride1 well I don't need one that's this big however but it's badass. Maybe a downsized version because that one is pretty diesel. But need one that is similar for camping overlanding. Trips etc. let me think about this as it's not a bad price compared to some I've found also. I also work in the er and can get some stuff but don't know where to begin to build one which is why I'm seeking a prebuilt kit. Like if someone gets a machete injury. Lol

Great video as always Jeff. I am running the Weekender kit from Outer Limit Supply. pnw4runners.com/fj/outer_limit_weekend_warrior/9.jpg www.outerlimitsupply.com/ I like how he does not pack it for you, you have to separate everything and pack it yourself. This is to familiarize yourself with all of the contents. That is in my rig full time, and I also bring a tacklebox filled with supplies when I go camping.

How could a motorcycle adventurer possibly carry even a portion of all that? Or better yet a bicyclist? None that I've met on the Pan American .

Our medical setup is designed for a crew of up 8 people between 2 or 3 vehicles. A motorcyclist or bicyclist only needs enough medical supplies for the person or persons on the bike.
