Apples will only keep fresh for a limited amount of time - in order to preserve the harvest and keep them long term - which is the key to being self-sufficient - we bottle them using the Fowlers Vacola method (aka "Canning".)

My kids learnt growing and preserving food when I home schooled them. Now they have started Uni they are teaching their friends. Hopefully more people will start using these processes!

Store them in dry beach sand ....keeping a distance of sand between each layer ...keep the air off them and allowing them to gas shed each other ....you can use an insulated water tight food grade bucket , two sizes ...one where you use the sand and one bigger where you keep old fresh water in ...carefully place the 5 gallon pail into about a 30 gallon container does not have to be food grade ...use a cork to drain water weekly to keep sand cold and apple will last for months and tast crispy for amount of time as well

Love this. Great channel. I live in the subtropics, so would I have to pressure can them instead because of the heat?

Looks good. Just wondering if you’ve ever had a problem putting the hot apple into a cold Fowlers jar? . I’ve managed to crack a few of mine when doing something similar and am now pretty cautious about doing so.

Don't usually have any break. I generally wash the bottles in hot water first...that way they are at least warm when adding the hot fruit.

Wow it was fun to see you canning your apples. Your equipment is different from what is used in the US. Do you leave the clips on until you are ready to use the apples?
@homesteading

No, just till the bottles are cold.

Thanks for the great video! It looks like you don't use lemon juice either? do they brown over time? I'm about to do a big batch with my neighbours huge apple tree.
@homesteading
@homesteading 3 жыл бұрын
No, we don't added lemon juice. Browning over the year is minor - we keep them in a cool place out of direct sunlight.

HI. I was just wondering, when you say 'long term' how long do your preserved apples last (unopened)?
@homesteading
@homesteading 5 жыл бұрын
They will last indefinitely like any other canned or bottled food, but are best used within a year. With time flavour and quality reduces.

Homesteading DownUnder Thank you very much for your reply. I’m very new to preserving / canning, and came across your video after watching your EasiYo videos. I’m gradually making my way through all of your videos. They are very detailed and informative. Thank you, and happy homesteading. 😊👍🏻

Once you open a jar for use how long will the fruit inside keep? Do you need to store it in a fridge once it is open? Fruit like that would be amazing on cereal for breakfast!
@homesteading
@homesteading 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it must be refrigerated once opened and of course used within a few days like any other canned fruit. But we usually use a bottle in a single meal!

Fowlers also make a resealable size 3 & 4 lid that can be used once you have taken the metal lid off, but haven't finished the contents of the jar.

Good job mate. How long can you store these bottled apples in the pantry?
@homesteading
@homesteading 2 жыл бұрын
We generally only keep them for up to a year, but they can be kept longer. Taste and nutrition deteriorates with time, they don't go bad unless the seal is broken.

The were specifically made for "Fowlers vacola" bottles. Only old ones available now as the new systems are electric.

Once they are canned where or at what temperature can they be stored?
@homesteading
@homesteading 4 жыл бұрын
Preferably somewhere that has low light and a stable temperature (cool, but doesn't need to be cold) for the longest storage life.
