As an interior designer who specialises in period homes, I love your passion. People always think that you need a lot of money to create a home...and of course that is true but creativity , thinking outside the box and an ability to express yourself through styling goes a long way as well. Everybody deserves to live in an aesthetically pleasing environment, even if it's a tiny flat. Don't underestimate the power of paint, wallpaper, some cushions and artwork ...even if they're pre loved.

I think the reason your design works is because prior to the late 1950s, people kept what they bought and added to it as they had funds. Money was always tight. So keeping an old sofa and putting a new cover on was cost effective, and a gift of a new trinket or painting was just added to the mix. Post World War 2 is when the ability to spend and build new came about, and when we saw decor become affordable to the masses. And trends came and went, and it became easier to refurnish a room every 10 or so years. Now we have KZbin and people redecorate every 6 months to a year. Chasing the newest look from Shabby Chic to Joanna Gaines. I prefer the eclectic gathered look of hand-me -downs and thrifted items that show a life lived and loved.

Well said and very true! People didn't have matching everything as much as they do today. Young marrieds would be given furniture from great aunts and grandparents, so effectively would be a few decades old.

@@mabel8179 Even when we were married, 34 years ago, we had very little. We married, and moved into a tiny 2 bedroom house, just when property prices were sky high!! This was the ONLY place we could afford, but we had little money left after paying the mortgage and bills. We bought a new bed. My parents bought a washing machine and fridge freezer, as Wedding presents. My in-laws bought the cooker and a bathroom suite ( there wasn't one !?) My father in law was a builder, so he fitted that and new kitchen cupboards. We were Loaned 2 REALLY old sofas. So, bed, sofas and no other furniture...Each month we saved a little, We bought wardrobes, dressers, carpets, lamps, cushions. The stuff that makes a house a home. We brought our 2 sons home, over the years, Eventually they outgrew the tiny bedroom they shared. We were lucky to find a buyer quickly, and moved to a new build 3 bedroom house. Then, several years later, we emigrated. Now we fully own our 4 bed/4bath house, which I can't believe! We've been very lucky. Still, those years in our teeny tiny house were very happy! It's who you're with, not what you've got. Every small purchase gave us such joy.....

This definitely inspires me to pay off my house, which is very Grandma vintage/secondhand furnished too, by the way. Like you and your mum, I pay a lot more per month than the minimum payment. I'm on track to pay it off in 5 years. THANK YOU for the morale boost! Also, love your stove and bathtub.

I love your story, your childhood with your mum mirrors my own with my hardworking single parent household. I never went without and she made every rented home (all 12 of them) feel incredibly homely. We also love all things vintage, second hand and Victorian. We now live apart but in 2017 she bought her first and forever home, a small mid terrace that's a treasure trove. I bought our 2 up 2 down 3 years later with my partner, both minimum wage earners so qe had a teeny budget, it hadn't been lived in for 8 years so in bad shape but we have DIYed almost everything and filled it with second hand and passed down vintage furniture. Really glad I have found your channel, its wonderful.

I had to create a laundry space in my old house. The basement, where it’s located, was open on 3 sides! Then I found out the house was sliding off its foundation. When I’d dealt with that, I found the whole bathroom subfloor needed replaced; the wood vanity was so rotted, I kicked it apart with three blows and carried it out myself. The upside of the only bathroom being worked on and inaccessible was the air flow to the open basement - you could see right down into it for three days! I had time to think about what I wanted and also determined to make it feel like it went with the rest of the house and that I’d stepped back in time. The OG claw foot tub and fuse box were my inspiration. I found maple flooring for $300 and had it installed for $300, then shellacked it myself. The house hadn’t been heated for two years so all the wallpaper was peeling. All ceilings but two were heavy „ popcorn.“ Some of the windows didn’t close (nor did they open). This year, I found three windows weren’t even glass! The plexi was loose and the amount of air leakage was substantial enough to notice :)) I also designed a kitchen from scratch. Your cooker is AWESOME; you’d love my electric 1927 Hotpoint B&W range! I designed my empty kitchen around it and two Hoosiers . It also has OG floorboards which run the length of the 15‘ room! ❤your channel even more now that I’ve heard your story. I’m also a trauma survivor who landed here in this neglected house as after a tough few years. Old houses are comforting. I’ll sew curtains and bake cookies this morning ❤ Here’s to healing in a house which helps us live more simply.

I just recently discovered your content and am in the process of catching up. I loved the home tour video. I really love y’all’s sense of style. You have some absolutely stunning period pieces and lovely, bold color and pattern choices. One person’s calm is another person’s chaos. I love the eclectic, vintage charm of the entire place. Thankyou for sharing your story. I actually really hate watching channels like you mentioned because it all seems so staged and full of BS! I'm a single Mum of 4, have been homeless with my then young children and did whatever I could to make sure they had what they needed. They are all adults now and I couldn't be more proud of them. My youngest lives with me as she has disabilities but she is an insanely talented artist. 6.5 years ago I too was able to purchase my first home. Yes I had to move to a semi rural area but that was fine as we run a small sanctuary. We also have 2 on line stores and this keeps us very busy. I LOVE old things, always have and my home was built in the 1850s, so I've decided to decorate it like it would've been back then and yes that means old everything. I even managed to find an antique loo 😁. Our town is now expanding and people are building homes so in a few years we will be selling to move to a larger property. But I'll be able to pay out my loan and buy my future home outright. We got really lucky with this place. Hugs 🤗 Liana from Australia 🦘

I was fortunate enough nine years ago to inherit a large sum of money (and it was from a relative I didn't know existed, so no grief, just gratitude), I payed of debt, and I bought and renovated a house. It wasn't a huge sum, for an average prized house it would have been a down payment, but since I found a very cheap house, I could pay it all in one go. I don't know how it is in other parts of the world, I know it's not easy to find houses this cheap in my country, but they do exist if you can live in the country, in low residential areas, far from bigger cities, etc. I bought my house for about 18000 euro, which for most sounds like I'm joking, or that I just bought a dog house or something, but no - it's a house, a real house, about 75m2 or 800 square feet, and it was in a pretty good condition too! I put in about 15000 euro on renovations, rewiring electrics, fixing the chimney, installing an air source heat pump, painting and wallpapering, and for a house built in 1945, it's in really good condition! I'm so thankful for being able to buy my own house, and for being able to find such a cheap house, and I wish that everyone could be able to experience that! It is possible, even though it may not be very easily achieved!

I'm new to your channel, love the 40s fibe very much. I love your story, you have touched me deeply talking about making you house your home; it's so logical what you say but somewhere along the line between a husband, 2 daughters and living in in a flat (which is the only thing we could afford) this concept was lost for me. Happy for you and your mum, in your home-finding / -buying / -making journey. Thank you for sharing. I live in a little semi, built in 1930, with quite a few original features, in a small row of 3 pairs of such semis (so far sounds not too dissimilar to yours...), in an eclectic street, in a large village in the south-East of England. I bought at the beginning of this year - something that would have been impossible, to be honest, if I hadn't inherited money - I am deciding not to decorate. I am not that bothered by how it looks, so I am not going to spend time and effort making it into a "sellable home" (Note about inheritance. The one hand, I'm fortunate. On the other, I'd give it up if I could have the people I inherited it from back).

stencils were popular in the 1980’s, the patterns were nostalgic for an earlier time. In the US the patterns like yours were based on Pennsylvania Dutch (German) designs.

Having had a similar upbringing as the only child of a single mother doing her best, I now find myself in another similar situation in trying to transition from renting to finally buying a home. We have a budget to stick to, and we're still early in the process, but you've given some incredible advice here. I've also found that at least in my area, people want newer homes instead of the quirky and beautiful older homes I'm drawn to. You've definitely made me feel more confident that owning my dream vintage home is totally possible. ♥

That house is a treasure, for sure, and I’m glad it worked out financially. I can’t even imagine getting a house for that little. I live in the Pacific Northwest in the U.S., and most banks won’t even take on a mortgage for less than $150,000, and good luck even finding anything for less than that, even a studio in a condo building with a big monthly HOA fee. Most minimum wage workers can’t even afford the subsidized rental housing around here, let alone home ownership. All that to say, I’m just glad you have been able to find this house and turn it into a lovely home. And it’s given me more inspiration to customize my space as much as I can as a renter.

It's great to see a family achieve a dream and make it reality. Luck and hard work are probably as important as each other when it comes to finding a decent home on a tight budget these days. I currently live in an 1880s/1890s rental home. It's quite literally falling apart, and really needs a ton of TLC, not just restoration of original features but rescue from rot, rebuilding of rotting door frames and rotting original windows with original glass, rewiring the whole house, gutting and replacing bathrooms, etc. He keeps the roof and necessary things like plumbing in good working order, but it needs help. We're hoping that we might be able to offer to buy it from the landlord at some point in the next few years. He has barely raised our rent in 15 years and has turned away offers from flippers because he doesn't want to kick us out. Housing and land prices have skyrocketed here, though, and we don't know if we'll be able to make an offer that's reasonable to him, even with the state of serious disrepair it's in. And we can't do anything to it until and unless we own it! But if we ever do, I have visions of enlisting all sorts of friends and family to help me learn the skills to renovate this tattered place and restore it to the little working class gem it once was. I'll probably have to start a KZbin channel to try and increase funding for the renovation 😆

Stencils were really popular in the mid to late 1990's. But maybe there was an earlier era that had them...I think the late 1990's went through a little homage to victorian era phase

From a tiny child, I have always loved patterns, wallpapers and coloured walls, but my mother laid the law down in the house and went for those hideous white blank walls. My Dad painted our hallway a lovely airforce blue when we went away and mother went nuts. As a 6 year old the begging to keep the lovely walls Dad had spent ages on fell on deaf ears. Poor Dad was made to paint it over with that, yes you got it, that hideous cold white. Years of rented properties means I've rarely lived with the colourful walls I want; even now they are shabby ugly white. Now, I'm allergic to wall paints so it'll be a good while before I can get the funds for all the wallpaper I need and find someone to do the job.
