The mast painting reminded me of the origins of the two expressions "Top Dog" and "Under Dog". When logs were sawn by hand with two men, the under dog was the one below, getting covered in saw dust. In Lee's case, paint.

Painting the mast would seem to me to be covering up/hiding future problems , I think going with a clear coat sounds like a far better idea , at least you should be able to see if any thing untoward happens 😃 And Lee , from someone who’s a little older than you and has knackered knees , but refuses to stop doing all sorts of silly things , go and see a good sports / rehab physiotherapist , it’s money well spent 😃🍻
