It cost us $9000 to ship 2 gliders from Hawaii to California. If it costs 4000 Euros round trip from Germany to Aust and back that is not bad.

I must confess, I have never really thought about how to "pack" gliders as sea freight, but I would have thought that each glider in its disassembled state would have its own transport box, in which the individual parts are held from all sides with supporting hard foam and other shock-absorbing elements (similar to the classic transport trailer, only with different holding systems and much more padding). For example, comparable to a small case for a disassembled trumpet, in which there is an appropriately customized and padded recess for each part so that nothing can wobble back and forth and can be transported undamaged. you just never stop learning :)

You can also ship your glider in the trailer. When you remove the wheels of the trailer you may be able to put two trailers in one container or just use roll on roll off option. At the end it is much more expensive and at least for the WGC in Australia we decided for the container option without trailer. Next year for the 18m WGC in the USA will will ship our complete trailer.

How about the cost and possibility of shipping the gilder+trailer RoRo? Could you also do a video about your normal average maintenance costs for a normal club glider? What does one need to expect as an owner of a glider.

This is so cool but seriously, this must cost a fortune. Can you do a video for the average viewer talking about the financial sides of things? I mean one would have to be independently wealthy to get involved in this sport, have a glider, attend competitions, etc.

Look into glider clubs. It's the most affordable way to get into aviation in my opinion.
@SerpentNED
@SerpentNED Жыл бұрын
As far as aviation goes, it is indeed the most cheap way of flying. Here in the Netherlands it's about 1000 euro per year, this includes everything from flying, lessons, licence, medical exam and club fees. Too bad I had to put a pin into this project due to private reasons, but once that is less of a factor I will definitely fly again.

I purchased a 1984 ASW20, owned it for 5 years and sold it for more than I paid. I was told by another private ship owner that owning an older, good glider is parking your money. Soaring is the most economical form of flight and is amazing.
@SteFly

You can't compare flying a world gliding championship with the normal costs of flying in your home country. In Germany it is indeed relatively affordable and you can fly a lot for about 1000 € per year in a club, incl. rental costs of a glider.

Gesamtkosten werden zwischen 13k - 15k € liegen, wovon allerdings auch ein Teil von privaten Spenden und dem DAeC übernommen wurden. Ca. die Hälfte bleibt trotzdem noch beim Piloten hängen.

How long would it take to fly from Germany to Australia in a glider? Is it possible?
@martijn9568
@martijn9568 7 ай бұрын
I’m not a pilot, but it’s 13000 kilometres from Germany to Australia in straight line. Assuming we want to stay as much over land as possible and avoiding as many war zones as possible will make this figure even longer. A quick look at a potential route would have to avoid Russia and Ukraine, Iran, Afghanistan and Myanmar. This still leads you over countries such as China, Turkmenistan and Tadzjikistan, which aren’t that great either. A potential route would more likely be more like 15000 kilometres. Assuming countries aren’t as issue there’s the potential for a lack of airfields in many regions. I also wonder how favourable the weather is for gliders in some of the tropical areas with tropical rains and the like. While modern gliders have sink rates comparable to and glide ratios far exceeding the best gliding bird, the Frigate Bird, that bird can stay in the air up to ten days or more. Our poor Stefan probably doesn’t want to do sit in the cockpit much longer than a single day at a time.😅 It’s an interesting question but even disregarding politics there’s probably a lack of infrastructure along areas of the route.😢

It’s either 6 single seater, or 4 double seater who fit in one container. At home you store your glider in a trailer, like you see on the cars. That’s how you pic it up at the factory, there is no delivery, because most are manufactured in germany. To ship the trailer would be even more expensive, and you can’t fly with a glider oversee that far. It would take way to match time, and over the ocean without engine is not the best idea.
@derekpappas1556

Right now gliding is an expensive sport , rather than a practical means of transport . Even with a means of self propulsion attached , it's limited range hinders it's mass marketability and practicality .

Well, it ma seem like it, but basically every sport is a rich persons hobby if you go pro. This is not something, that the average pilot will do on his career. You can’t say, that gliding in gerneral is a rich persons hobby, because you can fly for affordable money in clubs. Its really only the oversea competitions that are that expensive, everything else is more affordable. But how i said, every sport gets expensive if you‘re at a world competition.
