Sorry I didn’t scroll through all the comments before chiming in: if you can wear them, compression socks are great for your flight. My other tip is, if you arrive anytime during daylight hours at your destination, immediately take a cool or warm shower and get outside under the sun! You need that sun exposure to reset your internal clock, and the cool/warm shower will help pep you up to take advantage of the daylight rather than just crashing.

My biggest tip is, State Of Mind. You just have to be very zen and relaxed before and during a long flight, there can be delays and annoying passengers, but if you are in the right frame of mind they won't bother you as much. Starting out on the right foot also helps a lot, give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport and clear check-in and getting to the correct gate. If you're relaxed when you finally make it to your seat the entire travel day will be easier.

FYI, if you get on a flight and your monitor doesn't work, you can ask for a voucher for a refund/rebate from the airline to compensate since the price of your ticket included use of the monitor. the refund can vary between airlines. I never knew this until someone mentioned it to me and when it happened and I asked for the voucher, I got $25 voucher because the monitor was broken.

That is so mean. Do you have kids? Have you flown with kids by yourself? I took my 5 year old on long haul flights when he was 3 months, 2 years, 3 years, and 4 years old. It was challenging when he was 2 but he was never screaming or making a lot of noise.

Concierge Courtyard Apparently they may be re-bagged but not washed so may be covered in nasty bacteria. A blanket doesn’t have to go in your luggage as it isn’t going to be under the seat or in the overhead bin. It’ll be with you in your seat. Throw it around your shoulders before boarding your plane. It maybe could serve as a beach blanket as well. However I also like your idea of a large or blanket scarf.

My long haul flight tips (from a fearful flier!!) -I have a game called Asphault 8, it's a racing game. Great for turbulence. When you need to focus on the road/driving, you tend to bounce with the turbulence instead of against it. This game has saved me so many times. no I don't work for them lol -Get up and move around a lot. Go to the bathroom, book aisle seats (screw the view on a long haul!) walk around. Stretch, it's way better than sitting the whole time -Make sure you DONT WATCH your fave show for weeks in advance. Save it for the flight! Omg you just pissed away 3 hours watching it? Good, the closer you are now to your destination! -Good headphones, with an app like "rain" or "ocean noises" or whatever you're used to. I'm from Canada, so I like the one that is like rain on a tent. Whatever it takes to at least try and get you relaxed if you want to try sleeping on a plane (I cant) - Don't watch the monitor with the plane icon creeping towards the destination. nope. Maybe if you're within a couple hours you can watch it but otherwise it's just depressing -Keep a bag with all the goodies you need, and pack it before you get on the plane. No, not before you leave home. Before you get on the plane. Put your headphones, snacks, water, gum, etc in it so you can easily access it and you're not one of those ####holes rummaging around in the overhead bins every two seconds. -Say hello to your seat mate, even if just for a second You're sitting together for the duration, so be polite (from a Canadian ) - Think about your enjoyable holiday overseas, and how MOST PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WILL NEVER GET TO EXPERIENCE THIS LUXURY (of being packed in like sardines with leg cramps and turbulence, but still. I digress. It's a luxury.) -

I've seen the lady across the isle & a few rows head of me as she took her seat, apologizing to everyone about her nasty cold. Yet, didn't do anything to contain herself, wipe hands after blowing, eating etc. even put her used tissues directly into the seat back pockets, etc. I've seen a grown man swipe his nose after sneezing into his hands & wipe it along the outside of the seat in front of him just as I offered him my napkin. I've held hands with a few people to help them during heavy turbulence, one didn't speak english. I don't know their hygien habits. That foot strap mentioned, think where feet have been, did she put her shoes on it, then socks, where did she walk etc. A lot of things are picked up from the floor (people cough, sneeze, etc.) & did they think to wipe it down before picking it up with their hands & showing it to us? Children eat treats, etc. & smear stuff all over as they're also playing with their seat mates. A over tired 6-ish year old girl sitting in the middle seat next to me (isle) full on wet her pants/seat due to delays arriving at the gate. On one flight, we had an international marathon runner on her way to S. America. She (& travel partner) were accepting (verbal only) well wishes while wiping down the seats, etc. & the two others in her row. It's a amazing what you'll touch let alone when traveling in places or even going to concerts, etc. Seats, bins, hand rails, etc. many touched the side of the plane upon entry, then there's the dry air nose tickle. Before you now it, you could have brought something & shared it with others. Point is, things travel and in mysterious ways.

Yeah, my legs start feeling weird a few hours into flying so I'm one of those people that gets up every 1-3 hours to walk around and do some quick exercises and stretches at the back of the plane, or near the emergency exits where there's lots of space. Also, I always always ALWAYS pay extra to choose an aisle seat. This means I can get up frequently without disturbing others and since I get up so frequently my seatmates use this opportunity to go to the bathroom themselves.

One thing I would suggest is to have a well-organized carry on. Have a separate zippered pouch in it with the things that you anticipate using during the flight that you can pull out of your carry on to have with you at your seat before stowing your bag in the bin. That way you don't always have to get out of your seat all the time to get your bag down to try to find something, possibly disturbing others.

I agree with regard to food - as a flight attendant (for a long haul airline), the food is full of salt and other not so nice/healthy ingredients. The reason they do this is to get flavour in the food, which otherwise would be very bland. Reason for this? Our taste buds become more Numb so we can't taste flavour. I take my own food, even though I get free food and can eat from food from "up the front".

I recently went on a long flight and was amazed at how restless people were; standing, walking around. I'm used to long road trips; 9-10 hours, so the plane trip was no problem. I found out; I prefer overnight flights because the other passengers are quieter and more settled down. With the lights lowered; it's peaceful.

I think you could be right there! I have done countless road trips, with kids 10-12hrs so find a 14hr flight not too much of a problem. Night flights can be better if one can sleep and totally agree its quieter. Recently did one and got zero sleep. Night flights can be cheaper too.

I prefer overnight flights. You save money on hotels. Instead of arriving way after check-in and having to pay for just a few hours, you can arrive, go thru customs and hopefully get to hotel/Airbnb right at check-in. Giving you more time to get settled in your surroundings

Not to be that person, but be careful when crowding galleys and doors in-flight. The galley is the only space the cabin crew have available to them and there's also a limited number of oxygen masks in those areas, which would cause a problem in a rapid decompression (which is why it's discouraged to linger for too long or too many people at once). So, definitely get up, have a walk and stretch, chat to your crew a bit, and if starts getting crowded head back to your seat :) My top tip: If you want to sleep on an aircraft make sure your seatbelt is done up over your outer layer/blanket and visible. That way you won't get woken up if they need to do seat belt checks during the flight.

To each his own, but I personally would not recommend coffee before a long haul flight. Not only will it dehydrate you (and cabin air is dry enough as it is) but it will also make you have to use the toilet more which sucks when you’re squished in with tons of other people on the plane. Not to mention the caffeine will keep you up when really all you want is to sleep.

Well my first tip if you’re flying international long haul is spend the extra money and fly with a foreign carrier. They’re almost always better than the big 3 US carriers and have better catering. Second know the type of aircraft you’re flying on and try to book good seats that have better legroom. There’s sites like seatguru that’ll help you figure out the carriers seat configuration. Third, if you have a layover before your final destination, try to have a shower if you have enough time. Many international airports outside of the US have showers that either free or paid. Yeah you might pay but it’s definitely better than feeling all yucky. Fourth, bring a second set of clothes that you can change into during the flight, something comfortable that will help you feel at ease. Fifth, hydrate, hydrate! With that said, safe travels oh and bring some sort anti microbial wipes to clean your seats. Those tray tables are NASTY! Happy travels!

Some tips that work well for me: Put your luggage in a locker on the other side of the aisle instead of overhead. This way you can keep an eye on your stuff. Plan your flight so you’ll arrive by the end of the day. Nothing worse than arriving in the early morning after a long flight and having to fight sleep for a whole day. Try to ajust your biologicial clock as soon as possible. Put your watch at local destination time before departure and try to sleep/eat accordingly. Keep well hydrated. Dont drink to much alcohol during the flight. Use noice canceling headphone. I prefer listening to podcasts over staring at my phone/ipad all the time. Less tiring for your eyes Being 2.00m tall I always book an aisle seat / emergency exit.

Drinking is really important during long haul flights so I always bring a water bottle. I fill it up after passing security and before boarding the aircraft because you can sometimes wait a long time to get a glass of water, especially when flying economy. You don't have to keep your tray open like you do when you have a glass of water, and it also prevents spillage. I also like to bring a leak-proof thermos mug for hot drinks. During the flight, you can go to the kitchen part and fill both of these up whenever you like.

The air in planes at altitude is very dry leading to dehydration. I've recently found my go-to survival, albeit some may find it inconvenient lol. I'm a person who has really bad motion sickness so watching movies or reading in flight is a big no no. so here's a couple tips for my motion sickness people/those who hate economy: 1. I pack my own (favourite) pillow + separate pillow case for hygienic purposes. I fold the pillow in half with a tie and it becomes pretty compact! So i get a pretty comfortable sleep! 2. Since i packed my own pillow, i use the pillow the airline provides as a seat cushion to prevent my tailbone from hurting. 3. Pack anti motion sickness meds! And take it 30 minutes before the flight as well as follow up when it's time to take the next dose! I will never survive without this one. 4. Even before you book your ticket, take a look at the flight seat map. My go to seat is the two seater one (right after the 3 seater one) and pick the aisle seat. Because you're in front fmof the 3 seater, you get an extra legroom space!! 5. Brings me to my next tip, pick an aisle seat! That way you don't have to worry about bothering people to go to the bathroom. 6. As someone who is usually restless and can't sleep in long haul flights, taking a sleeping pill was lifesaving! If you don't have a prescription for a sleeping pill, trynover the counter melatonin. 7. Pack a water bottle and top it off with water before your flight (if the airline is ok with it) that way you habe water reservoir and don't need to wait long for a flight attendant to come. 8. Download relaxing instrumental music to help you calm down even more! I'm the type of person who finds music relaxing, so this is important for me.
