Simpler, happier times.

Simpler, happier, better off times. At least back then a single wage in a fairly menial job could house, clothe and feed a family of four.Sod all chance of being able to do that ever again in the UK.Since we lost all our industry there's little hope left for the UK.The tertiary sector will never provide jobs that allow people to be half as prosperous as they were in the early to mid 20th century. The crooks and fiddlers of the square mile (Who apparently bring in most of the GDP by pulling money out of thin air) won't be permitted to rob, lie, thieve and cheat as they have done since the 80's for much longer, especially when their corrupt practices threaten to ruin the entire economy of the UK and elsewhere. They only barely survived 2008,even then the taxpayer had to bail the crooks out,yet little was done to control and regulate their criminal practices.I can't go on for ever,it's not physically possible.

+silver760 - You might as well just end it all. Sheesh what an attitude.

+Hedgemist You can't ignore the underlying truth of my comment though! If it was a load of utter bollocks it would be a different matter!

They were simpler times, yes, but happier? The Great Depression, WII, rationing in the UK into the fifties, TB? In those days people didn't have all the stuff they have now. Many homes didn't have running water or an indoor loo. People had maybe two outfits, not the masses of clothes (and stuff) they feel they have to have now, if they went on holiday, and most people didn't, it was local, usually to the seaside if you lived in the city. There wasn't the benefits there are now, the welfare, the job seekers' allowance, the housing benefit, children didn't have their own room (unless you were an only child). People now have to have everything, the latest model cell phone, the microwave so they can heat up food instead of cooking from scratch as they did then (except for the occasional fish and chips), the holidays abroad.

I whole heartedly agree with you, The USA was a few years behind though. There has always been corruption at the highest levels, but now there is probably not one honest politician, or one corporation with any national alligance. I think, excluding racism, that the very best times in the USA , where people could have pride and dignity, raise a family on a decent wage, and be able to save for the future, and have hope, was in the late 60s and 70s and early 80s . In the US, with Reagonomics and his trickle down theory, globalization, the open Mexican border, and the demise of the unions, unless you have some special computer skills or ability, you could not earn enough raise a family. . What few decent jobs there are, wages are crap because of supply and demand. There are no well paying blue collar jobs where an person of average intellegence or slightly less , could ever have a decent life. . How could anyone have any pride working on below poverty wages. Here in the US it is even worse as we have no national healthcare. As unbelievable as it sounds, millions of Americans have no health insurance because they cannot afford the $2000 to $3000 dollars PER MONTH for health insurance for a family. You have to have a decent job, be below poverty level , or be a criminal in prison to have adequate coverage. Now with Trump, what poor coverage that was available under Obamacare will probably get shitcanned. I am glad I am old.

Listening to the father and his certainty there would be war, reminds me of my dad telling me that his father was just as certain. Certain enough to chuck in his job in 1937 and join the RAF. He didn't want to be a pilot, he always wanted to work on the barrage balloons and knew that joining up early meant he, as a regular, would have a choice of where he went. So he spent the war in Egypt on the barrage balloons. Must have been so hard for so many - dad was 6 when his father joined up and his brother was only 2. He didn't come home very often so they didn't really see him again until dad was 14 and out at work, working for his father's old boss.
