Thanks for the great info. I'm wondering why not just sell them with the instructions to wash them before use? Washing and sanitizing and all that seems to take away from the raw aspect of fresh grown microgreens.

I noticed that your sink has a lot of stains in it. If you go to the dollar store, you can get a product called LA Totally Awesome and it will clean that up and make it look brand new. I use it straight, no dilution. Thank you for the great video!

I grow small batches of microgreens at home and I just cut them and put them in the fridge and eat them. Should I be washing mine to and may I ask why they need washing if they are organic?

why wash the greens before sale? Decreases shelf life, adds a step of work, in most jurisdictions adds different food safe practices to be followed and potential change in your business classification with insurance changes costing more.

You go through all that sanitizing but use your bare hands to wash the sprouts. Wouldn’t bacteria under your nails be a problem? Also, I have frequently purchased fresh cut microgreens at the farmer’s market. Should I be washing them before eating?

How many trays of broccoli do you think you could put in that spinner/dryer? We have to harvest 40 trays at one time for one customer and it seems like doing that with this method would take quite a bit of time.

Great job MANDI & CJ. Never thought of using spin cycle on a mini washer. I was thinking of a strainer and a blower. 😂🤣😭😅🥲 Definitely something to think about but it is listed at over $200 and out of stock. Maybe later Keep up the good work 👍🇺🇸

Lol, strainer and blower would probably do it 😂 we’re all about bootstrapping where possible! We’ve even seen people convert old washing machines they got for under $100 into spinners! We prefer the squeaky clean unused ones for our drying process though 🤗🌱🌱

Love you guys and this channel! Great attitude and always inspiring. What other varieties have seed hull and dirt issues that would also benefit from this type of washing & drying?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 3 жыл бұрын
Sunflowers are notorious for seed hulls! That’s probably the #1 crop we focus with washes… most of the time, we don’t mind a little soil in the greens since it’s really not bad for you… fenugreek seeds seem to carry a lot of the soil up the stems though, so they are another notorious one! Those would likely be the top two… or anything you plant under the surface of the soil, like cilantros or Swiss/beets… sometimes those will carry a lot of soil up and need a quick rinse to get the excess soil out! Hope that helps 🤗🌱🌱

Could you explain why it's even needed to wash them? Or is it literally just because of the hulls and dirt? I'm asking because I saw many videos, where people just harvest them and put them directly into the box for selling.

Microgreens and sprouts are densely planted and can have issues. My understanding (I grow for myself) is that it is best to wash right before use.

Do you have any documentation from the department of agriculture to do what you do? Do you sell your micro greens?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by documentation… we had our food handlers license and used to sell locally and at farmers markets, but we no longer do. We are focusing our content creation, teaching others how to grow and our parent pending products now. It was super easy to sell microgreens though! Check with your local health department to see what you need to do!

Have you tried drying multiple bags at one time? I was thinking once I buy the machine trying to dry four bags at once. I hate drying with fans because they become damp and wilted like you mentioned.

does washing like this get rid of the left over seed hauls on sunfowers?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! It helps a lot with Sunflower seed hulls… Generally we only wash Sunnies and Fenugreek as they are the ones with the most clingy seed hulls.

Another trick is to run your hand over the microgreens daily to brush off the seed hulls… really helps them to pop a bunch off before harvest!
