Thank you for the tips. I just started growing and I love it so much, I'm trying to make a living from it. So I'm converting a home grow to a commercial attempt.

There's something so satisfying about watching a harvest video like this one! Yay to microgreens and feeding the chickens. :)

Thanks for the ongoing education with your videos! Time to get Nature's Always Right Mugs and T-shirt- and sign up for Steven's Patreon!!! A great way to start 2020... sippin' on my coffee, browsing the seed catalogs, making plans for a new batch of raised beds to be installed in March. Once you've tasted organic, home-grown produce, it's hard to buy the stuff in the local produce departments. I do it to get by for the winter here in Utah, but am counting the days until I can start growin' my own veggies again. And am looking into Eliot Coleman's method of growing greens nearly year-'round like he's been doing in Maine for over 50 years!

Thanks Paul! Nice way to spend the morning! I feel the same way about produce, and I'm totally ruined on store bought eggs forever, I will never not have chickens haha. Oh nice you must be reading the winter harvest handbook. That's a great book!

A small, handheld goldfish/minnow net works well for collecting the Sunflower hulls from the wash. I only wash the Sunflower because of the hulls. All of the other microgreens are not washed. Customers are instructed to wash before eating. Thank you.

I like the net idea. Ya I wish I could get away with not washing, that is ideal but my customers love how clean and easy to use everything is. Since I do such a small quantity and have the post harvest set up I do, so it isn't too much labor for the extra step.

How much do you charge for 4 ounces? I’m just starting to grow micro greens but would like to have a big enough production to go to the farmer’s market, so how is price calculated?

You can put something like an oven rack on top of the greens in the tub to keep them below the water surface and then use that screen to collect the shells.

@@NaturesAlwaysRight I have the same question, so I went back and rewatch video at 17:45. I see that you throw the whole thing of left-over (soil and stems) to the chicken and once the chickens are done with those left over, I assume what is left will be the soil part, then all that soil will go to compost pile? Am I understood correctly? Thank you.

Some do and some do not. Radish for example does not grow back. The energy is all used up in the leaves.

You can find electric mini tea harvester on internet that is smaller than this and you can use it with one hand. Maybe it could do the work too.

You could try but I bet they will get moldy. Worth a try though, or grow as the full size plant, throw out to chickens, throw into a field and maybe some will grow.

I have two questions for you about my micro greens. It's a vert small set up. Growing medium: coco coir, vermiculite, perlite and worm compost in equal parts. (I soak growing medium in boiling water to get rid of fungus gnat eggs or the gnat.) I grow indoors under a grow light. I grow them in 16 oz berry containers. I grow organic broccoli and a 5 part organic salad mix. My first question is the stems on them got tough. Any idea why? My second question which has several parts. Fungus gnats, how to get rid of them and what damage do they do to the plants? That vinegar and dish soap idea doesn't work. (Someone forgot to tell the gnats that they're supposed to go in that and drown) Any suggestions why and how to fix the problems? You seem to really know about micro greens and I would appreciate your help Thanks☺🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 4 жыл бұрын
The stems get tuff for me only when they are grown too long. I haven't noticed it happen any other time. Ok so what I think you have going on is either your worm compost or something inside is invested with the fungus gnat eggs then you are bringing them indoors and they can continue the lifecycle there. So try interrupting the life cycle by letting the castings totally dry out, or heat the soil to 130F (I'm not sure the exact temp that will kill eggs) or choosing a new source for nutrients that is being processed in a way to eliminate pests. The gnats may also be from fruit or something else you bring into that room, I'm not sure of your set up so those are my theories.

I bought microgreens once and rinsed them as I do lettuce and it made my sandwich taste like dirt so I tried to do a more thorough job washing and it still tasted like dirt. I don’t know if it was the way the brand grew or processed it or the type of greens that was in it but it turned me off from ever buying them again

As a salad by itself, mixed in to other greens or lettuce to boost a salad. Good on sandwiches, burgers, in hummus, garnishing a dish, a million ways. Chefs get pretty creative with them.
