After an acclaimed run at the Public Theater earlier this year, Sea Wall / A Life, a double bill of monologues performed by Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge, is transferring to Broadway, playing for a limited engagement at the Hudson Theatre August 8-September 29. But even though they don't interact with each other onstage, that didn't stop us from seating them side-by-side to see just how well they know each other in real life. I'm INFP and I also have a childish side but I try to mask it and to act more mature. Somehow I really admire Tom being so natural here, but you can also tell he is very empathic and deep thinker in other interviews... You know, some actors are amazing 'cause when you see them in real life, you feel like they're their popular characters themselves. Like, you see Andy Samberg in interviews and you think, 'God, he IS Jake Peralta!' Or you see Jim Parsons and think 'He has that Sheldon Cooper energy'. But other actors are even more amazing because they're so DIFFERENT than their popular character, it's hard to believe it's the same person! I swear Tom Sturridge feels exactly nothing like Dream/The Sandman. Even the cheerful demeanor aside, the difference is stunning. Tom has a lot of nervous energy- he's moving all over the couch, laughing with his whole body, looking everywhere constantly, is touchy-feely (leaning on Jake at one point, love language is touch). Often breathless with joy/excitement when he speaks. How the same person captured the sheer gravity and glacial manner of Dream/Sandman with his contained, deliberate movements in every frame he was in- be it walking, turning, looking- and his steady speech rhythm is beyond me. His voice even sounds so different, impactful (and so freaking good it's unbelievable). Part of the otherworldly, non-human quality of the character in the show came from Tom's costume and makeup, the set design, the sounds. But the other part, the big part, is Tom himself. He really morphed into Morpheus, and I feel so privileged to have had someone like him portray Sandman.

@@amarawinchester963 I said that me and my husband would never be together; I fell in love with the back of his head (I always thought that sort of thing was bull****) at a bar (I don't drink; don't even remember why I went. I think I was bored at the moment). I had just moved to a new state, and I didn't know anyone or "fit in" because the new state was/is the polar opposite of the one I grew up in in every conceivable way; weather, style of driving, manners, politics, music, style of dress, religion, just sooo many things. He was sitting there and the way he sat and talked reminded me of home; I was so home sick. He was hilarious, and charming, and ssssooooooo kind. You could tell it wasn't a put-on. I thought even if he turned around and wasn't my type physically, I still wanted to live a whole life with him. Well he turned around, and I could see why the women and men alike, even the straight ones were drawn to him, because not only did he have an amazing personality but this guy was UNREAL. Lean but muscular, but not TOO muscular, bright blue eyes, big easy smile, long brown/almost black hair; he literally looked like a rockstar ripped off a magazine cover, and dressed the part slightly too, but not in that douchy way (you know the type; this was very subtle; black fitted-casual dress shirt ,nice but unembellished jeans, work boots, and a very plain, thin leather cuff on one wrist.) Found out after I'd worked up the courage to go over and talk to him (he was super kind and sweet, very outgoing and funny, life of the party, quick with a joke, but you also tell he was a little shy and nerdy on the inside (biggest turnon ever; more than the quick wit or the looks) I found out from someone else after he left that he WAS an actual literal rock star; signed to a major label, lead guitarist and songwriter for this huge band. He didn't bring it up in conversation (because he IS shy and nerdy and doesn't love to be the center of attention but does love performing music), which made me like him more. He didn't brag. Very moral and ethical guy. To this day he is the best example of a person with true integrity I've maybe ever met. No matter how big or small if he thinks a thing isn't right he'll speak up, even among friends/peer pressure/etc. We became best friends and were so for many years. A few years down the line I initiated a friends-with-benefits thing with him, (because I knew way before that point we were obviously just going to be friends and I was cool with that,) and because I felt 1000% safe and comfortable with him. Knew there'd be no weird vibes, or morning after guilt (or diseases!),and our friendship was solid. Did that successfully for a long time so I'd stay single and not fall into dating a bunch of *******s just to satisfy a need while I focused on college) All went well. We went out separate ways. He had a kid, almost got married, didn't, ended being an amazing single dad to an amazing kid. A couple years passed. We ran into each other on a night we both happened to walk into that very same bar we met in (at this point neither of us had been to this place in years, but there was a great local band playing). Ran into each other, he approached me and confessed he missed me; I'd just been through a lot that I don't care to explain, and we became inseparable again from that moment. Absolutely loved his daughter, and she ended up loving me too, and gradually our friendship became more romantic, but we were both hesitant (him to ruin the friendship and me not to step on toes or date and then breakup and hurt his daughter's feelings; we both knew she was attached to me and it all fit great, but what if it didn't work out, you know?) One night finally out of the blue he told me he'd been in love with me the whole time but was young and had wanted to well act young, and me too. He asked me to be his girlfriend, it suddenly started downpouring (we'd stayed up all night just talking for hours and hours and the sun was barely up at this point); it was like something out of a movie; I'll never forget the shock, or how I felt like I was floating, when I said yes and he just grabbed me and kissed me for what seemed like forever, standing in his front yard just getting dumped on with rain both of us, and then him running around the yard like a little kid whooping while I stood in place unable to move feeling like I got everything I'd ever wanted in love in one moment. It blindsided me; I had no idea I wasn't the only one madly in love for the past 12 years deep down. To this day we're still the best of friends; he's literally my favorite person and I his. We still stay up too late trying to find the meaning of life; we talk about everything from music to physics and love all the same big and little things, from what we deeply believe in to the shows we watch. I've raised my beautiful stepdaughter with him, and she now has a little sister. So, what I mean is to share some hope by sharing this, that you should never say never. Love is worth waiting for, even 12 years. I will live and die with this beautiful soul of a man who I thought had no romantic interest; and as it turns out he's more of a mushy mush than I am under that tough hardworking exterior. Best of luck stranger. Your forever person will show up when you least expect them.

I read that Audible is going to release audio from the show. I was lucky enough to see it before it closed. It's not exceptionally visual, so I think you might not miss much by just listening to it. Tom Sturridge was surprisingly good. His part was a little sadder than Jake's, in my opinion, but both were great.
