I’m sure someone has already said this, but if not, here you go. The reason why these songs on opiate sound like undertow, it’s because it basically is. Tool had a number of songs ready to go to record, they chose the hardest most in your face songs they had for opiate, the rest were put on undertow. Early love shows before undertow was recorded, they were playing sober, bottom, crawl away, and swamp song. Only a handful of “new songs” were written for undertow. Been loving this Tool journey so far!

That “Bob Marley wannabe,” was actually Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine who Tool has a long history with. Adam and Tom went to high school together and Maynard lived with Tom when he first moved to LA.

Another guy just pointed out that this claim was never confirmed. His counter claim; Morello was the only Rage member present. Another possibility was that of a random guy picking fights in the audience.

You definitely need to see them live. It will change your life for the good and bad. It will show you what a live band should sound like and the quality of sound is amazing. That being said. After you see TOOL, you compare other bands. Not style of music, but musically talented and sound wise. And NO ONE and I mean NO ONE compares to TOOL live. Just get a ticket when they come close. You won’t regret it. I promise.

So, the live recordings off the Opiate EP were from a 1991 New Years Eve show at the Jello Loft (Green Jello)... The guys in Tool all initially formed (loosely) in the late 80s/early 90s. They all met through the band Green Jello, which was more of funny punk rock band that would dress up in costumes (somewhat like Gwar). The climate in the LA rock scene at that period of time was ruled by "hair metal" bands (Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, LA Guns, etc)... Green Jello had a cult following that was kind of the counter to that movement. Adam Jones was a bass player before Tool, as well as Paul D'Amour was initially a guitar player. They begged Danny to practice and audition at his rehearsal space (still currently Tool's rehearsal space over 30 years later). They tried auditioning a few drummers, but they would pull no-shows and often asked Danny to fill in.... they'd maybe rehearse once a week, if that, so Danny never took it serious and just played whatever he wanted. Early on, Tool bonded more from the LA punk scene in the 80s (Black Flag, X, Circle Jerks, The Germs)... they viewed the LA "hair metal" scene as completely vapid and insincere. Tool were just a few misfits that wanted to be provocative and make sincere art. It was never intended to be a serious thing at first... Danny even told his friends to not bother going to their early shows because "this band probably isn't going anywhere!" lol

I see it as a woman with trauma or insecurities who won't let people in through fear. The penetrate line (like a lot of Tools lyrics has double meaning. She is promiscuous because it helps her validate her self and feel beautiful. But she can't bare the thought of being close to someone so they can't hurt her. It's really quite a sad song if it weren't for the energy

Since you kinda went back to Opiate after the first 4 official albums..... May I suggest a fun little detour? Check out the live performance of Maynard's first band. I think it was called C.A.D. Stood for Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty or something equally ridiculous. The video is....amazing. Just hilarious. Really shows how FAR Maynard had come in terms of musical talent once Tool started. Because in this video he doesn't sound awful.....but I certainly wouldn't say he sounds good lol. Also....they play a song that might sound familiar.....it's a super early version of Sober. Although played much faster....and worse lol. And.....it's one of the weirdest bands you'll ever see, visually speaking. It's been a while....but from what I remember the guitarist looked like an angsty teen Kurt Cobain wannabe, the bass player looked like Eddie Murphy...complete with geri-curl, a shiny satin blouse(??), and the requisit 80s head-less bass guitar, the drummer was some beefy norm-core 80s mullet dude, and Maynard...........sported an undercut/mohawk/mullet, a flashy dangling earring, and a skin-tight spandex body suit. It's hands down one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. It brings me so much joy. You gotta check it out! :D

I always saw this song as simply exemplary of more based narcissistic tendency and not really a narrative about Maynard being a part of it; other than having the same nagging compulsions. Which is why he uses a pretty known stereotype of a woman who is materialistic and narcissistic as a wall to shield her from her fears. It’s more like it’s not that he’s involved with someone so much as he’s using an example of something he’s repulsed by to explain his feelings

@@Skullzrapper you could probably extrapolate the lyrics on this with the knowledge that this was recorded in LA at Green Jello's practice space in the warehouse they rented and if you added in the knowledge of the lyric from Aenema "fuck these dysfunctional, insecure actresses" so I personally think he was referring to the holly wood/LA female population in general lol.....also the comment at the beginning is rumored to be him referring to Zach from Rage Against the Machine who they were friends with, so basically Maynard talking shit about a friend, I can actually envision in my mind Zach flipping him off as he says it just from my own experience of hanging out with people in bands all hanging out together, they tend to talk mad shit to each other constantly, and it spills into the mic at times lol
