Great educational video. I found it to be extremely valuable and enjoyable. I will be trying the air layering techniques detailed in this video with my Chicago Hardy fig. While I love the video, I could have done without the distracting background music during the opening segment.

Nice, what about pruning some leaves than the plant focus more on creating more root, I will probably cut about the 2/3 or what to have, plus I didn’t see no nutrition(perlite, vermiculite and peat moss have 0 nutrition ), because those root need food to grow, thanks, you probably forgot to mention those setups.
@geriannroth449
@geriannroth449 3 ай бұрын
I guess the watering with the Super Thrive plus the Foliar spray might provide some nutrition for those young roots for the time being. I try not to have the soil/ pottingmix too rich with fertilizer at this early stage so as not to burn those young soft tender roots. But like you I'd prune some of those stems & leaves off before cutting off that airlayered branch

Thanks, you obviously are doing something right by the results you have achieved but your air layering philosophy is certainly different from most other air layering videos. I just air layered some plants today using plastic wrap, but will try your method on my next round. My question is concerning planting the rooted cutting. The sphagnum, vermiculite and perlite doesn't have any nutritional value in it. Do you not use any kind of soil mixture or do you fertilize so often that soil or compost is not needed? Thanks again for the video.

Hi charles you sent me 2 YLN cuttings and 1 panache cutting this year for the fig cutting give away. The panache has grown over 6 ft it has figs but they are not striped ? Any ideas on why no stripes. Thanks again
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Omar! GREAT news with all that growth & success with your fig cuttings. All the cuttings have been prepared & packaged by me, only, and should be close to a ZERO chance of mistake with labeling. Likely, the issue is that the gene that expresses the stripes has not happed this year, possibly never. Here's an explanation (note, I cut out the "sport wood" and did not share any cuttings from this lesson: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnPFpWh4aMSUmdE Also, reach out to me mid-January via my personal Facebook or IV_Organic Instagram, and I'll try to send you more panache cuttings. Charles :-)

@@IVOrganic thanks for your quick reply i just seen your video on sportwood. I kinda had an idea that the cutting i received had reverted but also thought that the tree was still young and perhaps show striped characteristics as it got older. Thanks again . I just received 3 cutting for a Ficazzana fig, in the mail. They arrived in a standard 3x5 mailing envelope wrapped in a small piece of paper towel then wrapped in scotch tape from top to bottom. They are 3" to 4.5" long, and as thin as a tooth pick. Should I even bother with them? I did snip them at an angle. (I hope I got it right because it's very hard to tell which way is up and down, they're so tiny and thin 🤔 🙄 ) I used some "root one" hormone, I have them in 7 oz Solo cups with coconut coir and a tbs. of castings, I don't know what else to do with them. I don't know if I should bother with them or not. I'm very disappointed 😞 with that seller.

Love your videos and want to try air layering my thornless Palo Verde. Possible? I live in the hottest place, Lake Havasu, AZ and am having the worst time even keeping my cacti alive with the heat. I also want to try Moringa and want to transplant the one I have in a large pot. Best time of year? Any idea? Thank you. Kathryn Uster Collage Art

I live in the Inland Empire and have dozens of citrus trees but only one macadamia nut tree. I would like to air layer it and make more. How many can you do at once? Should I try and do a lower branch or a higher one? The tree is about 25 ft tall.

Charles does an airlayer produce same roots as a cutting or clone would being different from what a seed would produce with the tap root? Thanks
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Case G. Airlayer & Cuttings produce the same type of roots-- no tap root (like a seedling). However, within 1-2 years, the cutting will be as stable as tap root tree. NOTE: Most figs sold by nurseries are not grafted on rootstocks that started from seedlings; but are rather cuttings. I hope this helps! Charles :-)

IV Organic thanks for the reply Charles My question was just out of curiosity. Hey Charles how is the avocado tree you topped back I have a bacon avocado tree and have it where it gets protection from the hard Santa Ana winds but this yr it doubled in size exposing itself and since the variety grows tall I’m thinking about taking it down from the top. I’ve never seen a tree grow so much in one session it looks amazing even with the inland heat of summer but fall and the Santa Ana winds and single digit humidity is when they can struggle I’ve found my trees will drink double the amount of water doing so will keep all the foliage on the tree and looking good avocado trees do not care for low humidity other then that it’s really an easy tree to grow unlike what many books say I’ve found watering and mulching on top of the leaves dropped to be key. Cheers thanks

Great video, which I watched July 2020 and used this process on my fig tree. However, although I did get a very nice root ball with plenty of roots, they were golden in color not white and they were pretty brittle and very much bunched within the peat moss. I'm wondering what I may have done wrong to not have healthier looking white roots. I left the area I cut wrapped from mid July until first week of Sept. I'm thinking I left it wrapped a little too long. Also, I was unsure how far up to cut the bottom of the area that was wrapped, of course without cutting any of the roots. It is now in a pot and time will tell (next season) weather I was a success. Just wondering if I should use some type of nutrient to help out the roots for a fighting chance to be healthier.

Hopefully you learned some more helpful tips that will bring you success on your next attempts. A couple suggestions: (1) work on an actively growing branch, (2) 1-2 years of age, closer to 1 year, (3) spring & summer are best, but you can accomplish success on many evergreens like citrus through winter, it just make take a few weeks longer to root. Keep me posted! Charles 🌱👍

I did air layer on my tangerine. I live in zone 9 After 6 weeks, it did not have any roots but it has lot of flowers instead. I opened it & cleaned the area which I cut the bark with my knife then root hormone, peat moss around with the water bottle, water it with superthrive. After 2 weeks now, still have no signs of root. What’s did I do wrong? Please advise. Thanks.
