In this video I discuss how and when I like to propagate Japanese Maples by growing them from seed, grafting, rooting cuttings and air-layering.

I just left Kyoto and fell in love with Japanese maples! Going to start acquiring some and excited for the new journey. I’ve mostly propagated mulberries but am sure the skill set transfers over.

I like to do both hard and soft wood cuttings in late spring after the new growth has hardened off. I’ve actually propagated branches as a cutting. I think the key thing is to keep it humid.

Great video! Just two important points from personal experience. 1 - maple seeds need cold AND moisture over winter in order to break down the germination inhibiting enzyme. I stratified mine dry in the fridge and none came up 2 - shishigashira is a great cultivar on its own roots and their are bonsai examples over 100 years old. I had good success with cuttings and airlayers this season on them

Jonny that was brilliant i air layer in the south of the UK from mid March to mid June with a big success rate i also put seeds in the fridge from November to April with good success i also graft with limited success probably 1 in 10 so i'm doing something wrong. This week i have taken 30 Acer cuttings and put them in a box as you suggest and i'll let you know how i get on with those but i did cut the leaves in half these are in my greenhouse. So with all this going on for the last 7 years i have accumulated over 300 Acers the love of my life as there is no wife to tell me off lol. Thanks again. Andy in Bognor Regis UK

Thanks for sharing. I just harvested about 50 Seedlings this past month from seeds that fell on the lawn. Most of which came from our "over grown" Pixie (over 20 ft high and still growing). I have had zero luck with hard and softwood cuttings. I have had about 50% with air layering but that was with a dwarf river birch, not Japanese Maples (have not tried it). I hope to try some grafting this summer to have offspring of my cultivars: Pixie, Margaret Bee, Lozita, Nuresagi, Moonfire? or Fireglow?

If your cuttings' leaves dry up and fall off are they pretty much dead or should you give them more time? My plastic bins got a little too much sun and they got hot. All the leaves dried up and fell off. I hate to give up on them but I have no experience whether they might still take?

@JonnyMaple Thanks...I'll call it a loss and refill the tote with some new cuttings. There were a couple trees that I won't be able to get to again that I was really hoping to get going. But that's life. At least I won't waste time watering dead sticks lol.

Hi, can you please share some reliable source to buy maple seeds online. Where will i be able to get different verities
@TreeGuyTy1
@TreeGuyTy1 8 ай бұрын
You don’t get different varieties from seed. Most times you’ll always get a standard acer. Sometimes you’ll get a genetic mutation that makes the plant have different properties.

I’ve dug up several seedlings from my parents garden and been growing them. I used the same soil that the parent tree was in but should I have used potting soil instead? The soil I’m using seems a little more compact/stays moist for a long time.

When you mention selling your slips and grafted named jrms, is there a patten legal problem. Seed propagation wouldn't be a problem because it's a "new" variety (hybrid).
@JonnyMaple
@JonnyMaple Жыл бұрын
Most Japanese Maple varieties are not patented, so they can be asexually propagated.You just have to do the research and verify that a variety is not patented before propagating.

Hi, I have a slightly off-topic question, I recently bought a very rare Japanese dwarf maple. Unfortunately, when UPS dropped it off it was placed directly in the hot sun, despite the seller writing too place in the shade. It obviously lost all its leaves within a few days, I've done everything possible to help it survive. The top trunk is basically dead, I can still see very small shoots and greenwood at the base. I am still a newcomer to bonsai and maples, is there anything I can do to help it if it won't bounce back? If all fails I was considering grafting it to a larger healthy red Japanese maple but I don't know if that's going to save it..

I would definitely do a couple grafts from the tree to be safe.... then try some kind of root simulator and baby the tree back to health.

Those are from a different species of Maple trees (not Japanese Maple trees). All Acer palmatum trees have seeds that ripen and fall in the fall/winter.
