Thank you for sharing your videos! Do you only water the root ball and not the leaves? I just got 3 Japanese maples and I noticed on other videos that they only water the soil/root ball and not the leaves.

I’ve been having a lot of luck with volcano sand as a soil conditioner. It’s cheap and a little goes a long way. Breaks up and prevents clumping more effectively than hort/sharp sand and it’s not as heavy either.

Thanks for the tips man. I recently was given a seedling from my cousin who grew out a seedling from her mom (my aunt) who took a seed from my grandparents home from her childhood. I now have a 6 inch Japanese maple tree that goes back to before I was born and I’m 50 years old. Your videos are valuable to me as is this little tree. Thank you!

How soon can u “up pot” a seedling from this yr? Do u wait until next spring or can u do it in early fall? My seedlings have formed at least one pair some two pairs of true leaves, all about 3 inches tall.

The best thing about these is you can buy them small for areas around the house and patio, any they will stay pretty small for 5-10 years!

Will you actually get full trees from rooting cuttings like this or does this dwarf the cutting?

I just bought a house and the previous owners planted a red japanese maple about 2 feet from the foundation in a little corner garden plot. Do you think this would be an issue as the plant grows? Its about 4ft tall right now

There was a beautiful maple tree in Nara, Japan I stayed at an acquaintances house in the morning. They showed me a 600 year old maple tree a very small bonsai. The base of the tree the trunk what is the size of a baby’s head in circumference a little bit bigger magnificent. two days ago between the cracks of my pavers I saw a Maple tree about 3 inches tall little baby. I didn’t want to break any part of it so I doused the ground with water and ginger pulled it out now I have it in a little container and I call it maple

My leaves never grew to that size why ? It was so hard to keep them from drying out that I couldn’t save it from the drought and I watered I thought enough.

What hardiness zone are you in. It would help so that we could correlate the times of year you are talking about.

Hi, I find your videos helpful. Thanks for sharing. I live in Norway and last winter had a few days which were extremely cold. Plus, this spring we had weeks of dry weather with almost no rain. The maple did not get water during that time as I was out of town. Now the leaves are much fewer than last year. I have pruned some of the obviously dead branches. Do you have any more tips that I can follow?

I have mine in the ground for about 6 months and is maybe 2 years old when I bought it. I have no real sheltered spot in the ground for it and where I have it not it's getting some abuse so I might put it into a pot. Good to know they can do well in pots so I might just keep it as a potted tree/shrub. It's an Acer palladium or so.

Jonny, do you ever have issues with squirrels/chipmunks digging around in your seedlings? If so, have you found any successful methods to prevent or minimize it?

Just made one of these and put four seedlings that were growing on my property from its bloodgood mother and one cutting. One week later they are growing and living strong! 50/50 perlite and a mix of pine bark etc. Thanks for the new hobby Jonny!

Hi, Jonny! Could you please help me out chosing a maple? Which one is the most red maple of these two: Garnet or Red Emperor? I've ordered them both online, but I can't decide which one to keep for my balcony garden, and which one for my outside garden. Thank you in advance!
