i use turface in all my potting mixes the past few years. i learned from the bonsai growers. it works great. and doesnt cost half what even the promix or similar mixes cost. once you have 100s of trees in pots bagged potting mix gets very costly. thanks jonny. trees look great!

Hello, have a two tamukeyama Japanese maple trees in zone 7a and before I knew anything about planting I planted them in full son. They are doing very well. I water them daily at about 11 am before it gets extremely hot so that they can handle the extreme heat. I have had them for 6 years and they are gorgeous. Just sharing but I feel really bad for them now that I know better. 😢

Very informative video. I live in zone 5 and would like a video on how to manage my Japanese dwarf container maples. How do I know when it is time to place in my garage? Should I keep the window shades closed throughout the winter in the garage? How much do I water them in the winter? ​@@margaretodamo6784Because our winters are brutal, and the trees and plants are in containers, not the ground. The ground is much warmer for the plants in the winter than a container, and I have read numerous times that you should always try to get zones two levels below yours. That applies even if they are in the ground. I have no choice but to bring them in as I cannot plant them in the ground as there are a lot of deer on my property, so I have them in containers high up on a second story deck to protect them.

I have mine in the ground for about 6 months and is maybe 2 years old when I bought it. I have no real sheltered spot in the ground for it and where I have it not it's getting some abuse so I might put it into a pot. Good to know they can do well in pots so I might just keep it as a potted tree/shrub. It's an Acer palladium or so.

I bought a Spring delight JM 10 gallon size from a very popular online seller in NC. I went and picked it up and the plant is doing terrible. I can't figure out why because all the other plants are doing fine. I actually think someone accidentally spilled something in it before I put it in my truck. They had a open house that day with hundreds of people walking around. I told them about it and of course they just want to blame me saying I didn't water it enough or I let it get to much sun. I'm so disappointed with their customer service I will never buy a plant online again. I just hope it doesn't die. It lost more than half it's leaves and is still full of brown leaves. I just had to vent some where because they don't seem to care and won't call me back.

In starting a new tree in a bucket, I drill 2 holes on the outside about 3 inches up. Letting the tree reach for water and leaving some water sit on the bottom for when I am out of town. Also something was eating the new leaves, after spraying with insecticidal soap it stopped.

Have you ever tried the root pruning pots? They seem to do really well no matter what you put in them. Often when I buy trees from a nursery, or even worse a big box store, the roots are a tangled mess from the round pots. I know your up potting and that's great but a lot of places you can buy from don't. I've seen so many planted trees dying lately after 2,3,4 years. I often think the circling roots are to blame, so before I stick one in the ground I get aggressive with the roots. Anything I can't straighten out gets cut because these tree's dying in ground after a few years is not something you want to see. And that goes for any tree really. The bigger the tree,the more thorough you should be.

Very informative! Beautiful maples you have! I grow mine in pots (zone 5a). We have two 3yr old maples now and planning to repot. I use Espoma organic potting mix as well. I just bought a 'tree fertilizer' based on the local nursery's suggestion. Do we need to put some pebbles or fine bark at the bottom of the pot to prevent root rot? We have terracotta pots w/drainage holes. The pots go inside the garage in winter. The leaves were scorched last yr b/c I didn't know they needed part shade. We had ours in the East side of the house. When it gets to 80-90 deg, do we water 2/wk or 3/wk? Thanks!

For terracotta which generally only has a single drainage hole, pebbles on the bottom are a great idea.

I grow these trees from seeds harvested from mature trees in my garden. Every spring, I lose a significant proportion of my stock - the leaves seem to be emerging well but then just wilt, and the tree dies. In some cases the bark just above compost level looks bare and in others the small trees pull out easily with little root development. I know the verticillium fungus is a particular enemy of Acers but are there other major diseases to look out for? PS - can verticillium be airborne spread?

Over watering is a particular enemy, maples love moist but high drain soil, they don’t want to dry out completely but also don’t want to be wet always, sounds like root rot possibly, also!! Don’t up pot them into a pot that’s too big at once! Bonsai by Jelle explained his maples where suffering when he pot them into a pot that was way to big

I generally like to do it in the Spring, but as long as you are careful and keep it out of intense heat, you should be fine doing it now. I would do it in the late afternoon when it cools off, so it can have a cool night before going into a hot day to help.

The best way to know if it needs to be repotteds to slightly lift the tree out of it's pot and see if it is becoming root bound.

Hi, I find your videos helpful. Thanks for sharing. I live in Norway and last winter had a few days which were extremely cold. Plus, this spring we had weeks of dry weather with almost no rain. The maple did not get water during that time as I was out of town. Now the leaves are much fewer than last year. I have pruned some of the obviously dead branches. If you can try to protect them from the wind. But if you can't they'll live. You'll need to check every week or two to make sure they don't dry out, if it's not frozen. I'm in zone 7

There are many factors, so it's hard to know without seeing the tree. In my experience though, too much sun exposure can be a cause of branch die back.

Its a spoiled tree with good quality potting soil BUT I might stick the little guy in the ground, in a more shady area as the Concrete patio might receive too much heat reflection for the tree. I already have 3 Trees in the ground ( Bloodgood, Coral Bark, Crimson Queen ) and they held up pretty well. I wanted a Bonsai tree / Lions Head BUT that might not happen. I live in SoCal. I have katsura. I live near Dallas TX. It shows some distress because of the extreme heat 100+ The bark is turning yellow and some leaf are burned. Its located under shadow. Any tips? I want this tree to survive.

Why not use G&B Acid Mix which is specifically for conifers and maples and other acid loving plants..

I have not tried the Acid mix with Japanese Maples, because the regular soil has worked so well. Japanese Maples like very slightly acidic soil, and the acid mix may be too acidic. The pH of the regular G&B potting soil is in the ideal range for Japanese Maples.

Interesting that you swear by the regular potting soil. I see a lot of potted maple folks using pine mulch+moss+perlite or pine mulch+soil+perlite at something like a 75/20/5 ratio for their trees. I have about half my trees in potting soil (those have been going for a couple of years) but this year I decided to give the mulch potting a try with a few. They're all doing fine so far, though I do worry a bit more about the mulch mix drying out faster if I have to leave the house for a week or more during the summer months. Guessing either way they're generally fairly forgiving trees as long as you don't waterlog them or let them dry out. I have an orangeola living in red clay that's kicking just fine (it's on a hill though so luckily naturally drains).

@@JonnyMaple Depending on where someone lives I could see preferring one mix more than another. Potting soil is going to keep them more moist than a mulch mix which is good in a warmer area without a lot of rain. I always worry about mine in potting soil a bit during the winter in the PNW since it's a solid 5 or 6 months of daily rain. I've definitely lost a lot of non-maple plants planted in soil that can't handle soggy clay over the course of our winters, but mine with potting soil keep coming back fine so far. I'll see how these mulch mixes work this year. Tough to experiment on 200 dollar trees, though haha.

I’m in Zone 5 and I have to protect my trees that are in a pot. The roots will definitely get too cold if left out during the winter. You should be okay in zone 6 and above though. I’d still bring them next to the house or garage in zone 6 though.

Overwatering will kill these trees. A lot of people just pot them with pine bark, moss, and perlite and even then if you use too much moss for one that is in a shadier area you're endangering its root system if it is unable to air out between waterings.
