Knoke was shot down on 29 April in action against the P-47 of Captain James Cannon of the 354th Fighter Group and was hospitalised until August 1944 with severe concussion and related injuries. Before he bailed out, Knoke managed in turn to shoot down the overshooting 'Jug' piloted by Capt. Cannon, who was taken prisoner. Knoke claimed to have had some friendly interactions with Cannon before both were picked up by German forces.

Fun fact: My dad's callsign is Carlos, named after Carlos Hathcock. The reason he got this callsign is because when he was training with the gun on the F-18 Hornet, he was using the wrong targeting system and ended up spraying everywhere except the target they were supposed to hit. he thought he had nailed the target, and when he landed everyone was mocking him as military men do, and they came up with the callsign "Carlos", after the famous sniper. Everyone now thinks it's because he's Mexican, but in reality he's named after Carlos Hathcock. He now is retired, but flies with Draken International as a civilian fighter pilot, as one of the best fighter pilots (with guns too XD).

@@symphinitystugiii3476 Yes, pretty regularly. He's the "director" for Draken flying Red Air for Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. They fly daily, doing all sorts of air to air and air to ground combat training. They even drop real bombs. My dad's a very good dogfighter, but he's better at Close Air Support. They have A4 Skyhawks and F 1 mirages as of right now, but they're trying to upgrade their aircraft to F 16s possibly. Another funny fact, is that my dad was one of the best with a rifle out of most of his marine friends, which came in handy in Afghanistan XD. So in a way, his callsign fits.

Carlos Hathcock used to set up his White Feather Industries booth at gun shows in the '90s. I engaged in a couple of conversations with the man. IIRC he was wheelchair-bound, and in his mid-50s he seemed old to me (I was 19-20 at the time). Wish I had taken the time to better appreciate our brief talks, he passed not too long after.

Very nice. For a touch more accuracy in your depiction of Gunny's Unertl lose the recoil spring. He took it off because it rattled. Also the feather is way too long. The one he wore in the bush was much shorter and smaller. Otherwise, nicely done and thanks for mentioning Burke.

Basically when Carlos Hathcock was mentioning this part he spoke how when his scope saw the glint and he shot in the direction, the bullet went through both end of the Cobras scope, through the eye and obliterated the left side of the snipers head. causing literal crainal evacuation (brain matter and skull matter due to the force and vacuum of the shot). Hathcock said that he was faster on the trigger as if the Cobra would've taken the shot at that moment, Carlos would've been dead. He also didn't hold any grudge toward the cobra, he had respect for his fellow enemy. There was another time where Carolos used a 50 cal machine gun and placed a powered scope on the top to use as a 50 cal sniper rifle to shoot at a Vietcong riding a bike that was carrying AK47 weaponry from a long distance.

10:19 That's not actually true. The deadliest sniper of the Vietnam War with most confirmed kills was an Army sniper, SSG Adelbert Waldron, with the record of 109 kills in 8 months. He specialized in shooting from patrol boats, sometime while moving. Sadly, not as much is known about him compared to the famous Marine Corps snipers.

Hathcock isn't even officially the second deadliest, Chuck Mawhinney had 103 kills, and Eric England 98, but in all fairness, not all Hathcocks kills were confirmed as he often just headed off alone so the only records are the notes he wrote down himself. However, I'm fairly sure he was the best, considering the missions he went on.

Which kind of defeats their purpose since they had other then their leader no officers were part of the unit. So John R Burke was actually my great uncle on my dad's side. I was named after him. I was born on the exact day he was laid to rest after his heroic effort, but 14 years later... Sounds like you read the book and know the story of my great uncle! This is great! I've seen many different videos of this story but this animation is unique, little cheesy though, but still intense.

One of the best memories of my time in the Suck was at the Scout/Sniper Instructors School in Quantico, Va. The class, I was part of, was about half made up of Marines. The other half were from Delta, Seals, Green Beanies and Rangers. We started with about 75 students. About 25 of us graduated. After each training section, the cadre pulled the class together and asked us for critiques about that session. At the Stalking section, during which you donned the Gillie suit you had made, slow-crawled about 1000 meters along a power line cut, set up your firing position and took your shot at your "targets" (them being several instructors who sat in the bed of a 6-by with tripod mounted spotting scopes and binos looking for you and radioing in “walkers” to lead them to your suspected position. If they find you, it's a Fail. You get one more chance. Fail again and you are sent home). Afterwards, at the critique, I said that this part of the training was insufficient. We were under a time limit (I can't recall if it was 2, 3 or 4 hours) to maneuver to a position within 250 meters of them, fire your first round, wait till a walker came within 10 feet of you, then fire once more). The time limit forced us to move with more speed then you would under combat conditions and to “cut corners”. I understood that the course only had so much time to teach us a shit load of knowledge, but stalking was too important to be rushed, I said. They should add another week to the course to give stalking the time it deserves. To back-up my opinion, I told the story of Master Sgt. Carlos Hathcock III's famous mission to kill a NVA General deep in North Vietnam. After a helo insertion, he took more than a day and a night slow-crawling though more than half a mile (800 meters) of a flat plain with no trees or bushes, just knee-high grass. Got to within 300 meters of the general's hootch and waited for the general to appear. He killed the SOB. Then, slow crawled back across that open plain while the company of NVA regulars assigned to guard the general furiously scoured the ground looking for him. That's the kind of training exercise we needed at the best sniper school in the world. I didn't know it then, but “Gunny” Hathcock had been a regular visitor to the school (which he and Major Land had fought long and hard to create) and was there back behind the truck with the rest of the cadre listening. The next day, we rotated out to the range for practice and Qual with our rifles. He came out to the range and did what ,an instructor later told me, was his routine. He picked one student and spotted for that shooter during the two days of range practice before qualifying began. Another of the cadre told me afterwards that I "was the first god-damned ‘yankee’ that The Man had ever picked to spot for.” For a glorious 3 hours in the morning, 3 hours in the afternoon and 3 more hours the next morning, I was tutored, in a slow Arkansas drawl, by the Finest Marine to get a solid cheek weld on a stock and proper eye relief to a scope. It will be one of the memories I’ll recall as I take my last breath on this earth. Semper Fidelis, White Feather.

He had a 20 minute dogfight in an SBD dauntless dive bomber against three zeros and survived! Then later in the war made history by downing seven enemy planes in one day in a fighter. I think it’s a great story would make a great video, thanks for all your content, its great!

@@imao4933 the viet cong were Southerners who sympathized with the North, and were fighting against the Republic of Vietnam's forces, making them insurgents. The PAVN (People's Army of Vietnam) were the military force of North Vietnam, and would not be considered insurgents.

This shot is legendary among trick shot competitions. Few have been able to pull it off and of those, none of them had vegetation or their lives on the line to contend with. Incredible. Love his take on being a sniper. Enjoying the thrill of the hunt is one thing. Yet killing someone is not something to be proud of. Doing your job so that your brothers may live to see another day. That is something to be proud of.
