Backing up discs now will have a huge benefit later. That is we have a way of keeping those games that will be tied up in licensing purgatory, or delisted on digital storefronts. So if you can digitize your games and use ODEs, or Flash carts. You in theory could play your entire physical game collection for decades. Digital is another problem.

Luckily I've been migrating to ODEs for my consoles because dealing with worn disc drives is a huge pain. Optical discs were fine in their heyday but they haven't withstood the test of time.
@jOeLwAlBy3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how they were made. I'm gonna just put this out there. If they were Japanese made discs they probably gonna outlive you. If it was made somewhere with less care for quality then it might get the rot. The majority of badly mad discs wouldn't last a decade and would be dead by now and out of circulation. There's plenty of sega cd And maybe the Phillips CDI discs from early 90s working fine. I presume audio CDs made in the 80s are fine for the most part too.

Great video as always Adam! Gosh, this brings back memories for sure. I also am one of the OG's from back then that backed up all their games.. CDRWin, CloneCD, Disc Juggler and Nero Burning ROM were some of my tools of the trade. I spent countless hours researching how to do this and that.. modded nearly all my consoles for the purpose of playing backups.. except for the PS4 (I know there is a firmware exploit for that one, but haven't gotten around to it) and well the Xbox One is still as of yet unexploitable. On a side note, for PlayStation 1 era games, I actually found a hardware based professional CD duplicator made by TASCAM that ripped PS1 games 1:1 to blank CD-R's. It worked near flawlessly (granted the original source disc was not too scratched up), and hence no computer was needed for those games. When I get home I may leave the model number of this TASCAM duplicator for reference. Just another option if anyone had acquired something like that. On the topic of scratched discs.. I remember how GameStop (EB Games in Canada) constantly tried to sell me their warranty on games.. Well guess what? I said no to that extra charge every time. To this day, all my games disc/cartridge still work, and are in immaculate condition. But yeah, I never understood how used games were always so bad.. I found discs from previous owners that were scratched up the wazoo and even spilled with pop drinks and gum... Seeing that kind of abuse to these discs just breaks my heart.

Not only modded console can be useful, which is a really good recommendation to digitalize any physical game that you got and put it on the SD card or Flash Drive. but i think they're might some people that they like to use on Emulator if people don't want necessarly needing a console, and just to buy the game legally and rip it to the computer to play it (depending on the disc they're supported for the systems). That could be also useful to digitalize some games that they don't really need a console but Games. could be maybe also useful. it's not the same feel to play it but atleast adapters exists for an original feel.

Love me some technical stuff! Nice video I love it! I think you skipped Saturn games, that one was tricky too (with TOCs etc...), but I think you covered Saturn enough in your previous videos!
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
I didn't skip it, like I said in the video, use CDRWIN.

With a CFW PS3 you can just rip a disc and validate it with multiman. Now it will be a pain in the future with trying to preserve games that are over 100gb. How many tb? Xbox one it stinks cause too much security

Just gotta be patient on waiting for personal storage options to (affordably) catch up. I used to think Metal Gear Solid 4 being over 25GB was utterly intangible. Now it can fit on a $10 flash drive...

Lol the Dreamcast ain’t messing around. I didn’t expect such a long convoluted process. Never had one but it’s interesting to hear about.

Hey Adam what version of Firmware are you running on that drrive? (LG WH16NS40 Super Multi Blue Internal SATA 16x Blu-ray Disc Rewriter) I was reading some peeps were not able to rip 4K HDR movies.because the drive ships with the updated 1.03 firmware. Was also wondering if this would affect ripping ps4 games and such? Great vid...your memory is awesome remembering how do do all this ripping.
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
I heard that too, I haven't tried a 4K disc so I'm not sure off hand to be honest.

Could you burn a game cd data to another cd like with music? Incase original disc gets damaged you have a backup disk with that game on it?
@AdamKoralik2 жыл бұрын
I mean, yes, but actually having it function on your console is another matter.

The readme file on rawdump shows four models of disc drives that work with wii & GC games. "Use a LG-8164b or LG-8163b or LG-8162b or LG-8161b dvd drive." I found the "LG-8161b" model for $30 AUD on ebay.

I don't rip pc games, or at least modern ones that are available on storefronts but I rip pre PS3 console games for achival purposes, in part not just because its more legal than downloading but then I have my own rips that I know are not tampered with, but also I have some games so rare that I bought new and still are in brand new condition so I don't want to have even the smallest mark on them. and I don't want fingerprints on the manual and box when opening.

I found your video very informative. I am interested in ripping my original xbox, ps3 and ps4 games to my PC. My question is, I also have a PS Vita, so if these files are ripped to an iso format, does this mean I would I thene be able to transfer these files to my Vita and play them on there? I know with Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 it's possibe to wirelessly play games on the PS Vita, but I would love to be able to play my games when I am away from the internet. Is this possible do you know?
@AdamKoralik2 жыл бұрын
I don't know enough about the Vita ripping or hacking process to be honest.

If you wanna check a game you must rip it. Rip it good! Thanks especially for the ps4 info. Amazing tip about that bluray drive. I'm using a phat 360 drive with the power adapter. I've noticed it works well if you detect the drive in jungle flasher before ripping. This doesn't need to be done again until the computer is restarted.

I know this video is from a year ago, but wanted some clarity about using imgburn to check disc health. Will that work even for the Dreamcast to just read into an iso file successfully to verify the disc is not missing files/corrupted. Not currently concerned about backing up, more so checking disc health.
@AdamKoralik2 жыл бұрын
The Dreamcast is by far the hardest. You can't do that with IMGBurn. You have to use an actual Dreamcast and network ripping.

I found everything I need online, I just need to verify if I've understood everything correctly. I don't have a Wii, so I can't use one to rip my Gamecube discs. Do I use an LG 8164B with an IDE to USB converter, on my Windows 10 PC, but using XP virtual machine and RawDump, to get my ISO's. Use GCLoader to run those ISO's, and GCHD MKII for HD?
@AdamKoralik3 жыл бұрын
Windows 10 is the X factor there. I've only used it on XP and 7. Hypothetically it should work. Though I suggest adding an mClassic to that setup. I did a video about all this.
@bradleycoates62973 жыл бұрын
@@AdamKoralik So mClassic through the GCHD MKII? Dope. I had issues with my Gamecube's laser, which sent me down this rabbit hole. I think this is the route to go. Cheers.
