Shinzen tells how it came to pass that he became a Vajrayana monk in Japan.
This is part of an interview Shinzen Young did with Stephanie Nash in August 2009. www.basicmindfulness.org/
The purpose of this interview was to 'get the scoop' on Shinzen - the man behind the techniques. See other segments being posted over next few weeks for some good stories.

what I found most interesting was a story at the end where the "intelligent" man died from an accident after which Shinzen had a realization of life being more than just mind and body. it is almost identical story of the famous spiritual teacher - Eckhart Tolle. Eckharts professor in college who was very intelligent and he looked up to him. Then all of the sudden professor committed suicide. it was very bizarre and eye opening for Eckhart a crucial point shifting his consciousness in hiswords

Shinzen’s stories are fascinating. I highly recommend his video about “after enlightenment love deeply and act effectively”!

I always wondered what gave Shinzen Young the impetus to become a monk. The tragedy became his epiphany.

Being such an intellectual, you would think safety would be considered as a priority. Goes to prove, everyone can do things as such. What's cool is that it got you out of your head.

I wouldnt know to not light a match inside. Then again, we dont use gas here. But a gas leak is probably very rare occasion.

“Learning the Japanese language” Judging from how you just pronounced the word “Samurai” I don’t think your method was very effective.

Ningen so judging his American English pronunciation of the word "Samurai" and questioning his Japanese skills is all that this very personal and moving story did to you? I'm sure if the UCLA sent him to Japan for his PhD research (a trip that was probably paid with a scholarship which he had to apply for), his Japanese is pretty decent...

How do you know if his pronunciation is correct or incorrect if you don’t know any sort of foreign language (Let alone any sinitic or Uraltic Language) it is possible that his American pronunciation of that word is more correct than what you hear in the movies.
