Regarding the origins of esports, I‘m always sad when StarCraft isn‘t mentioned. It was the first esport people made careers out of 2 decades ago (if at the time only in Korea).

Should be as in fact it's one of few real esports. It's often totally forgotten that not every game that is popular and which has tournaments can be put into that category while StarCraft makes the cut.

@@ryanwoodruff1863 I don't play much SC, but It's a great game, it just doesn't have as much mainstream appeal anymore due to the fact that RTS is has a high barrier to entry, As a lot of people want something they can play easily within their first hour with the game. FPS and Soccer are both very simple games and are very accesible, and result in being widely popular. Also RTS is punishing to the Ego because most people think they are Sun Tzu but realise they can't peform like they though they could under pressure. For all its quirks Broodwar is probably the most demanding esport ever, (It is still very popular 20+ years later, along with AOE2) with the highest skill cap and least linear skill progression. There isn't any non RTS esport game that has lasted 2 decades.

i feel like another good variant of sub battles would be Puzzle Battle, although i don't know how well the lower-rated players would do since many of them don't understand how puzzles work

Chess could have been an E-sport way earlier but it needed a big spark to kick it off and bring the two communities together, I don't know much about the chess side but the scary thing with games is that the developers always need to change things and keep things new and it's an active product whereas chess now is in a great situation where it has no need for change and it is a well known widely spread game that people have a very favourable opinion of. I think chess is a surprisingly good investment for real teams / competitors to be sponsored like E-sports have been without being at risk of developers making choices that benefit the product in ways that are unhelpful or detrimental to the game as a sport because games currently are ultimately for a casual audience whereas chess has been a competitive sport potentially leading to a huge shift in the chess community for the better as an E-sport.

I don't understand why people are ignoring 1 extremely important aspect. Sure, Hikaru mentioned it but VERY briefly. Learning curve. To be a pro you need to spend AT LEAST 10 years of almost daily practicing, studying, playing, analysing, tournaments and it doesn't mean u will even be in top 500!!! In any game u can get to top 200 within 2 years if you start daily practice. This is why chess is far from eSports. Even if you attract people by great marketing and big KZbinrs, like Botez, Hikaru and Magnus did, it still does not change the fact of the time needed to be invested to be a pro chess player. This is the main reason. As well as popularity of bullet, 3+2 and rapid has increased only in recent years. Which is the only entertaining part for most online viewers.

That may be true when you have 10 seconds on the clock but in the opening and a critical moment in the middlegame or endgame, it's probably more beneficial to spend some time and ensure you will have the better position. These low rated players do the opposite - they play too quickly in the important parts of the game and then when it's time to start premoving, they go into a think tank lol

Im quite sure i have seen interview of Hikaru saying he cant watch low elo games at all a few years back? Because he can see all mistakes clear as day. Now he's gotten used to watch them play, enjoy their games and say that they've been playing well. I'm sure its difficult for GM to accept "beginner mistakes", but Hikaru can actually accept it really well. (Im sorry if that wasn't Hikaru who said that, it could've been Carlsen aswell... cant recall)

Sub battles are for Twitch suscribers only. You have to sub to one of them (or both) then get on the queue in discord and hope you'll be picked to play.
