I'm not all the way thru this episode, but I wanna say it before the comments flood in. To the fan who sent in the question about marriage, see if your GF can meet you halfway. Talk about your fears and hopes, and maybe you can be engaged and move in together, so you both feel safer. But, like they said, communicate and let your feelings be heard and considered, if she can't hear you out, it's a bad sign. I hope everything works out!! Good luck!!

My parent's lesson on money and introduction to the concept of saving was similar to Trevor's. Except I saved up my money for half the summer to buy an OG Playstation because I wanted to play this new game everyone at school was talking about: Final Fantasy 7! So I scraped and saved up every penny I could, saved up (I think it cost like $300 at the time). And when I finally had all $300 saved up, I then learned about how you don't just get the $60 video game for free with the Playstation.

I gotta say, being from Utah, it was really interesting and bizarre to hear relationships talked about from a perspective where 25 is *young*, rather than being so old people think you'll never have a relationship. Hearing a perspective that is so diametrically opposed to the one I've heard my entire life is baffling.

Hope Mariel and her partner are okay. The whole world is being forced to change because of this virus, maybe when we get close to the next cold and flu season there'll be a vaccine or better treatment options against this monster of a virus. But if there is any silver lining here, it's that other much more serious diseases aren't being spread as much because of the social distancing and self quarantining, (technically we're flattening many curves,) maybe we'll have a healthier fall and winter this year because of it. Stay safe everyone, wash those hands and cover your mouths, this is a variable and numbers game, let's give covid-19 less variables to multiply against us.

My sister hasn’t really lived with her husband before getting married, but they have hung out a lot and spent time together and travelled together to conventions and whatnot. I wonder if there is a ‘time together’ dynamic that can be an alternative to living together?
@leakypeach62504 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, I just learned recently that, statistically, marriages succeed more if there is no cohabitation beforehand. Then, if couples did live together beforehand, it depends on the reason (monetary reasons tend to be better off statistically while couples who decide to test out their relationship are worse off).
@davidvondoom28534 жыл бұрын
Traveling or camping together might give you a sense of what it's like to live with someone. You'll learn their habits and how clean/messy they are.

@darter90004 жыл бұрын
Leaky Peach Almost sounds like the living together as part of ‘sharing the load’ makes for a stronger foundation for relationship building. While testing out a relationship could almost be an issue of ‘are the couple looking for an out or what?’ Kind of situation.

Maybe it’s old fashioned but I think that most of what they’re describing as relationship is what marriage is supposed to be. Growing pains and weathering the storms that life gives you together. I don’t know what would prevent me from making a lifelong commitment of marriage if I find the one that makes me feel comfortable and the one that I could live with. But it’s very interesting to hear their perspectives from their actual relationships.
@3212009a4 жыл бұрын
I think the difference is, if you find that there are unreconcilable differences in a relationship it's a conversation to end it, while in a marriage it's lawyers, courts, time and money. Why not test whether you can spend a life together without the financial and legal hassle instead of going into what is essentially a legal contract mostly blind?

I love seeing people talk about getting an allowance.... I asked my mom if I could have an allowance from doing chores, and she looked at me and was like "yeah, you get to live here." I never got an allowance. I did chores not for money but for food on the table. Easier said than done. Communication is critically important. Really does one person like to go on the phone all the time? You do need the time to miss each other, and both parties need their own friends, and ideally also have some mutual friends. Also complicated depending on whos hometown you are in, whos family and friends are there and who is solo. Roommates can ruin relationships. Need to share some interests but also have things you both want to do some alone time and a mixture of shared space and personal space definitely need a balance.

I feel like there are a couple of mixed messages from Barb and Jessica early on. They really romanticize the idea of moving in together (I guess more so Barb in this aspect), saying "Oh you just know that you're with the *right* person" and that's that. But later on when growing pains come up, Jessica jumps on the train as soon as Fredo mentions it. Just feels a little out of order, the growing pains are the first thing to hit after an initial infatuation phase and it's honestly the biggest barrier in my experience. You've got to be able to understand that pushing through things is NOT inherently bad, of course there's a delicate balance there but people really don't just run into "the one." I feel like you will have to make compromises in aspect of life you are trying to perfect and nothing worth working towards is easy.

Moving pre/post marriage has nothing to do whether you love someone. Do what's comfortable with you and your partner. But, you notice quirks and ticks while you're dating and growing in your relationship. If you're smart, you'll have a long term relationship (more than a year) before you get married or move in. By that time, you'll know each other's tendencies and how to communicate with one another. But, to each their own. Do what makes you and your partner the most happy.
