I think he suggested that there is no good outcome of this, because Putin manuevered himself into a corner from which he can not come out without being either humiliated or going totally crazy on the ukrainians, the alternative to that would be total capitulation, ie.the current Ukrainian government going into exile and the russians installing a new puppet regime, for which currently there is zero chance. So i think you are reading too much into his opinion.

The main problem for the Russians as the professor mentions is that you have a huge country with 40 million people. Even if Kiev falls (which is uncertain) you have a very large insurgency to deal with. Weapons are flowing into Ukraine and many are very sophisticated. Some of the Russian weapons like the T-72 tanks are from the Soviet era of the 70s.

Many of the Russian troops are young conscripts that have little training, almost no battle experience, and have friends and sometimes parents in Ukraine. Motivation and morale seems very low. They have numbers but the equipment is not state of the art since they did not expect such stiff resistance. A lot of the Russian troops were told they were going on exercise. Now they find themselves fighting against a people who are their cousins, many of them are of Russian decent and speak Russian as their first language. Their moral will be low because of these reasons. The Ukrainians have lot's of reasons not to wish to be part of some "Greater Russia," there are few families in Ukraine that don't have relatives who died because of the Soviets. Thousands died in one famine alone. You may defeat a nations army but when all the people are also armed and they are defending the street they live on, you are in one heap of trouble. The Ukrainians are a tough people, just look at all the boxer that have come from just that one country. I have a feeling this isn't going to end as well as Putin expects.

The contexts are different. In NI the troubles started when the nationalist community wanted an end to discrimination and got beaten up by the police when demonstrating. The army was sent in to keep peace and to maintain the status quo. This meant they were not equidistant from the two sides. In the Ukraine, there is a Russian concern that the Ukraine was moving out of the Russian sphere of influence and that the Russian minority in Eastern Ukraine was against this. Here lies the contrast. Russia does not want Ukraine to be promesso independent. The UK, well England mainly as the UK as such includes NI, would happily be shot of NI.

The Russian troops stand still, some forces will secure western boarders from the West unnoticed from the media and all in arms and Ukrainian Legionnaires have a feast creating a new level of Mercenaries operating for the highest price soon world wide after they tasted first blood and at some point Ukrainians get back control eventually. #cyberpunkcoltoure

All are possible but I think some version of 3 is the most likely. I was listening to a security expert recently. He said in a stable society you need about 2 security personnel (police) for every 1000 people to maintain order. In a high conflict situation, you need roughtly10x that so 20 per 1000 people. That means Russia would need about 900,000 troops to maintain control, undoable. Even half that would be impossible so eventually I think Ukraine will go back to the Ukrainians even if it is devastated first and/or some of the ethnically Russian areas are lost.

@@WilkinsMichael That was Putins official statement to secure the Russian minoritis and have a political change in the Capital City. Russia is no Sowjet anymore and the Stalinists left a long time ago. While over here we still have not cleaned out our closet, unfortunately. So, the Russians got rid of their tyranns of all the same by force, but here the same form accumulating capitalism is still in place that is unfair to humans und harmful to the globe. I'm not convinced about this notion that Russia's progress has stalled. They have moved to the outskirts of Kyiv in 2 to 3 days, Putin could be delaying the final push into the city to secure his supply lines and get more troops into place. Thats what I would do, but then I'm no expert.

@Sauce My comment is not based on intuition but on historical facts and the so called "experts" are often wrong. I think you are misunderstanding my point. The Ukrainian forces are obviously doing an incredible job, but the western media is portraying the Russian army as being incompetent. This is very dangerous. Doing so, they may be creating a false sense of security, which could be catastrophic for the Ukrainian people.

Yeah, I'm actually surprised by the Russian military, it seems weaker than many of us expected it to be and I know Russia is holding back but the amount of problems they are having is quite shocking, the west and I suspect China are watching Russia's military capabilities here, probably more so China because they likely see an opening to take advantage of Russia in the long run because the sanction the west are putting on Russia are doing a lot of damage, that could push Russia under the thumb of China which I doubt the Russia government or people want that but Russia is being weakened a lot here.

If you want to talk about an end game I have read that in Russia they are talking about splitting Ukraine up into three parts. A little Russia, a white Russia and whatever else they call the last part. You can perhaps see that the eastern part will include the expanded new Russian republics. Something in the centre including Kyiv perhaps. Western part of Ukraine next to NATO borders. I have no idea if this is true but you can see how something like this may come into being.

Lord of David who champions those in need please be with the people of Ukraine as they face their Goliath, President Putin and his Russian army. The peaceful people of Ukraine need a miracle only You can bring. Just as David slew Goliath, if it be Your will, let the people of Ukraine against all odds champion Putin and Russia and continue their peaceful life as a free nation. Please cause Putin to pause and realize a way to live peacefully with the proud people of Ukraine. I pray for a peaceful resolve that meet the needs of both countries, and save the lives of Ukrainian citizens and Russian soldiers. Lord, You caused the walls of Jericho to fall, You freed the Israelites from their Egyptian captors and if it is Your will You can free Ukraine from their tormentors. Please protect Ukrainian people and provide for them in their time of need. Amen 🙏

It may end, (and hopefully) with a brake down, or a shift in policies of Russian security systems and its people, after all they too are Russians with families and will suffer, in the long run, (they are not daft)! ànd that has happened in the past in the Kermlin. In time this may happen.(hopefully sooner then later) After all you have Surbian people fighting Surbian people, and brother fighting brother that dos end well! (YOU CAN DEFEAT YOUR ENAMY WITH POWER AND STRENGTH BUT YOU WILL NEVER DEFEAT ITS PEOPLE, You will be just holding a viper in your hands saying you have won, till it bits you back! He should have read the Toest book The art of war, still studied today). It also states that the only winners in wars are those that do not fight in them, the Chinese know that and use it, by letting other fight them for them. The best thing the West can do is to give Russia or Putin what they call a goldern bridge, that is means of getting out of this mess with out losing face.
