I've learned English for over 10 years but I still weak in speaking and listening. This video inspired me that if I can immerse English in my daily life, I have to talk and think in English for at least 4 hours in every day, then I can find out which words or expressions that I have to know in daily life. At last, thank for your sharing.

I came to America at my age of 30. It was really hard to be open to correction since I was not enough young to admit my mistakes. As I met my girlfriend who is a wonderful American lady, I changed and started to accept corrections, and my English improved a lot. I’d say being open to corrections and feedbacks is crucial, especially for those who move at a later age.

This "basic" word story is very good and I have a very similar one. As a Brazilian too, based on my experience, I can say that anyone can learn English completely on their own, without even having someone to talk to. We can learn to speak English by talking to ourselves, recording audio, looking for new words on the internet (nowadays there are many great channels on youtube to learn expressions and languages), and start to incorporate what we learn into our daily lives, just by speaking alone. I became fluent that way. However, now that I'm in Canada, some things have helped me a lot when I have contact with natives, for example, there are small differences in pronunciation that we don't notice the difference when we speak. Just last week, after years of saying the word "old", my English teacher told me that it is a common mistake among Brazilians to pronounce "w" instead of "l", and that the correct thing to do is to put your tongue on the roof of your mouth to pronounce the l, otherwise it sounds like "owed", and that changed my life!!!! It was such a small detail that I would never have paid attention to it without a native. Other pronunciation deviations I learned from her are related to words ending in "ed", I noticed that Latinos have a tendency to mispronounce most of these words, and now every time I am going to pronounce these "ed" words I stop and think a little bit about the rules, and this is helping me a lot. So becoming fluent alone is super possible, but to refine your pronunciation, the ideal is to have contact with a native speaker!

@Demondzeta
@Demondzeta Жыл бұрын
It happened to me too. That just means you are not accostumed to speech. Your brain knows the words and the sentences when eading them or by listening, but you haven't taught it to pronounced them and to talk, so it freezes when you suddenly force it to do it. This can specially happen when you are correcting your pronunciation as the speaking proccess becomes concious again. It happened to me and I felt really bad because I thought I was fluent already. The answer to this is of coursed practice alone. Try doing it by reading out loud every day as much as you can and shadowing with videos until you get to use the most coomon expresions and sounds without thinking, you would be surprised once you get condident enough to talk to other people again. Don't forget that learning english's most difficult requirement is to not be afraid of talking to others, start slow an don;t be afaraid of making mistakes, we'll make them forever probably, even native speakers commit mistakes from time to time

I´m from Mexico and one of my biggest dream is be fluent in English sooner, like you guys. I´m so really thankful with this sorf of videos, because, firstly, help me to improve my listening but also inspire me. I mean, Thiago´s history It´s a clear example of people who break walls, he found other way to achieve his goal by creating his own resource, his own environment, such as, that help his to improve in English. 1 years ago I had not enough money to invest in a course, but I had a dream, "be able to speak english" so, I decided to learn English by myself, using different resources like KZbin, Duolingo, some grammar books, podcast and I designed my own plan, where the aim was learn things that really full me, and now I´m so proud because my level of English is much better than 1 years ago. In addition, I have developed new skills, I have made new friends around the world, and day-to-day, I see how the new opportunities are opening to me. I will continue learning as much as I can. So, my recommendation is Instead of put wall in front of us, or some excuses to learn something, I think we need to look for other ways to learn that, to improve, to be better, to achieve your goals. Put one name to your goal, "get a better job, study abroad, whatever you want", and then desing your set of resource and be consistence, be patient. This is a long way so try to choose well what you will learn. My best wishes to all.

Later, I learned via watching movies, listening to music and watching KZbin channels like Learn English with TV Series, which actually helped me a lot. Now, I am more confident to speak English even though sometimes I speak with wrong grammatical rules 😂

Thank you for your comment! The most important thing is that you understand others and other people understand you! That's the aim of communication, right? If you want to continue your studies, the next step would be to eliminate the basic mistakes.

So do I 😂 . I started learning English by reading books and initially it was a bit challenging to me to pronounce words and learn them by heart. But then, I realized that I can learn English by watching and listening and this approach was useful. I'm still studying English but in order to get IELTS and I so happy that I'm not single person in the world who has faced a lot of difficulties in order to learn English 😂

Hello Thiago it's very good to follow you even considering the videos was posted one year ago. I have traveled around the world doing assessment and strategic management for some small companies. My job was done specially to African people. I am have tried to speak English but it's not easy because sometimes we don't have time to to learn appropriately because we have to work in parallel. I am 64 years old and never gave up and I still have a lot of things to learn.

I really want to speak English fluently, but I live where people use their native language daily. My native language is Indonesian, and there are no foreigners living in my place. I don't have opportunities yet to speak English with a native speaker, which is why I'm struggling to learn English, especially when it comes to my grammar. Also, my vocabulary is still limited, but I want to keep studying by reading books to expand my vocabulary, watching videos on KZbin to improve my listening skills, and writing comments on KZbin. I think it's possible to learn English by listening and watching, even without having the experience of speaking with a native speaker. But, I have to admit that speaking English with a native speaker is really important. It's good to hear your story, Thiago. Thank you for sharing your story; it's very inspirational

Hey! Thanks for leaving us comment. You are right, it's possible to learn English by listening and watching, but as you already know from the podcast, output - or deliberate practice of speaking and writing is crucial! Make sure you try to have enough of deliberate practice after you dedicated some time to watching and listening.

I started my journey when i was around 17 years old. And, I started from the stretch and it was all soo baffling for me... I learned a lot of grammatical rules and all. But, I wasn't able to communicate phenomenally. Later one, I started listening songs in English and there are soo many applications where you can talk in English.. So I started doing all these things. And, Now I am a lot confident and I speak fluently. I also want to be an English language tutor...
