The greatest trick is thinking I’m having a great time standing in lines all day and dying of heat. By the way I live in Canada so tend to only be able to go during March Break! My first time at Disney I was 13 and realize most of it was an illusion. My favorite part was Monorails looked so high tech gliding around Disney World back in 1980. I was fooled by Space Mountain when a recorded message from an Astronaut would say riding Space Mountain is the closest thing to riding a space ship.

When I was a kid I once walked up to a cast member at Disneyland Anaheim who was standing near the statue of Walt and Mickey. He had a collection of fast passes and asked If there was a way I could earn one. He told me that if I could beat him in a race back to the City Hall on Main street he'd give me and my whole family Fast passes to a collection of rides. I of course ecstaticly accepted and booked it towards the city hall with my family trailing behind. I only looked back once while sprinting through the crowd only to see the man still standing there smiling and watching us go before walking away casually in another direction. When I arrived at the City Hall with me and my family completely out of breath and sure of victory we told the cast members behind the desk of our deal with the previous cast member. The worker casually calls out the fast pass guys name and he comes out from a back room cool as a cucumber and says "What took you guys so long?" To this day I don't know if that guy used some secret shortcut and golf cart, had a twin brother, or was a secret Olympic level sprinter. But what I do know is that Disney takes their commitment to immersion in magical wonder to a whole other level.

Disney also limits chairs. They want you on your feet. They want you to sit down to eat at the more expensive restaurants. They also want you to buy cold drinks: so a lot of sky. To keep people stuck in hour long lines waiting to get on rides, they entertain with big video screens. This could lead a family with kids to go to Disney parks for a whole week instead of just a day. So many more opportunities to part families from $ for merch and food and drink. To get shorter lines: arrive early. Power walk to the back of the park. Do those rides first. Circle around the main amoeba of the crowd. If there is a new ride, consider power walking to that ride first.

Around 2008 took a "keys to the kingdom" behind the scenes tour of the magic kingdom in Disney world. Tour guide said that they wanted to build the castle taller, but then they'd have to put a blinking light on the top for low flying aircraft-- walt didn't want this, so they built it like 1 foot below the limit. They still wanted the castle to look tall and grand, so this is why they made the 2nd stories of the buildings on main street not full scale-- this way looking down main street at the castle made it seem huge.

I'm one of the few people that climbed a fence and snuck into Disneyland. The time was 1963. We, two of us, crawled along the top of the berm and came out behind the construction of the hanted house, over the fence straight onto a raft to Tom Sawyers island. We had a pocket full of "E" tickets for all the rides, (remember them?). On the way in we hid in the train tunnel in a niche, got chased by an American Indian, saw the employees entrance from the top of the berm and crawled through the no see-um bushes to the hunted house. Pirates was in operation then with no Jonny Depp. The real adventure was sneaking in. We were 12 years old, a great and memorable day. Couldn't do it now I'm too old and security is better......

You forgot to explain/missed the point of why they used forced perspective. On certain buildings as the Cinderella's Castle at Magic Kingdom, Matterhorn mountain at Disneyland, Big Thunder Mountain on both. Also both buildings that have/had The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. FAA regulations, buildings taller than 200 feet need to have red light indicators. Those attractions are all under that height to avoid having those lights on top of them.

I really enjoyed it. I did it in 2010 - 2011 so definitely do some research for updates, but I had a great time. Don't get me wrong, it is a lot of work. I did a Fall WDW program and worked at the Emporium on Main Street. The hours are pretty crazy and you'll find it is a more of a work program than a school program, but depending on your major/school, you may be able to get credits for it! I recommend saving up a bit before you go as well because your apartment rental is taken from your check every month and it doesn't leave you with too much. You can survive without saving, but you will have to live extremely frugally.Research cast member roles and have an idea of what you would like to do before taking the admissions exam. When they ask you about it, list your favored role and any experience you have that favors it. (A lot of people really loved being custodians. You'd think it'd be gross, but they said it was really easygoing and you got to travel the parks a lot) In my experience the Spring program is probably a bit easier than the Fall program because there are less holidays and craziness. HOWEVER, the plus of the Fall program is that you get to see all the holiday parties, celebrations, parades, etc so that is really nice! You get into all of the parks free. Anytime (except for a few block out days for Magic Kingdom and Epcot. usually just Christmas and New Years depending on crowd levels). You also get merchandise discounts and discounts to restaurants and special events. Some special events are held specifically for college program members :) If you are not a Disney fan (which I assume you are if you watched this video), I actually wouldn't recommend it. However, as a Disney fan, it was like a dream. Had an amazing time.

Speaking of "forced perspective"...I guess not only do the buildings get relatively smaller as they go up story by story, but also get "not as tall" as you head from the beginning of Main St to the end. In other words a 2-story-tall building at the City Hall end is taller than a 2-story-tall building at the statue end. If you stand at the Railway Station, the Castle looks far away due to this variation of forced perspective, but standing at the statue, the Railway St seems closer. Gives the visitor the impression Disneyland is huge going in, but not that far of a walk to the exit when you are tired and grouchy going out.

This was fun, though I’d love if you’d cover more on the superb sound design that plays a major role in the immersion in Disney parks. Theme music and sound effects for nearly all areas and rides, with speakers hidden creatively all over. There’s almost always carefully planned ambient sound, though guests only occasionally see the major equipment infrastructure during concerts, etc.

Here's an immersion illusion. In Toontown, the painted sky at the top of an attraction wall matches the real sky color exactly so that you can't tell what's painted and what's real. They blend together. On a day with no smog, that's a problem-- they don't match any more.

I had a summer job at Lockheed Burbank in 1954, lived where the Harbor Freeway ended at Adams Blvd and saw the giant crane excavating at the future Disneyland. After graduating Purdue in 1955, Lockheed Burbank made me an offer I couldn't refused. I lived in Toluca Lake near the Warner Bros Studio entrance and went to Disneyland during the first week of its grand opening. Everything was brand spanking new, even the cracks on the brick walls on Main Street. In 1970, I was working at Hughes Aircraft Fullerton and a secretary had to quit because her husband was relocated from Disneyland to Disney World. In !971, I was temporarily transferred to Sumter South Carolina and I got the chance to go to Disney World in the first week of its grand opening. Two out of two ain't too bad.

One of my favorite illusions is the ground. That's right. The ground. The seamless way that you transition from land to land in the Disney parks based on the texture, look and feel (upon walking over it) of the pavement in each individual land. They change ever so slightly but at just the right places. Your brain automatically switches gears when you walk through doorways. This is why when you walk into a room, you sometimes forget what you came in for. You brain is resetting and recalibrating in the split second that it takes you to enter. Disney strategically uses things like thresholds, archways and bridges (I'm looking at you, Adventureland) at the entrance to every single land from the castle as well as between the different lands in the parks. It's a neat little trick that really lends itself to the immersion and what I find to be one of the the most underrated aspect of the parks. Check it out the next time you're going from New Orleans Square to Adventureland or entering Tomorrowland or event Fantasyland. The castle is the entrance to Fantasyland and it automatically preps your mind for what sort of environment to expect in that particular land. Anyways, thought I'd give a shout-out to my favorite aspect of Disney immersion: pavement. Love your stuff, Offhand Disney! Thanks for satiating my Disney cravings when I can't be in the parks.
@louziffer
@louziffer 6 жыл бұрын
Would've been good to go over why the sudden transition in Disneyland is notable. Where there isn't something like a bridge or other transitional structure to cross, Disney typically uses some space for a slow transition in theming from one area to another. Lamp posts, railings, paint colors, decorations, furniture, etc. will morph from one theme to the other in this transition space.

Forced Perspective really worked at Walt Disney World when I first visited on a high school trip. Riding the ferry over Bay Lake and seeing Cinderella's Castle made it seem like it was a large palace in the distance, when in reality the castle is only 189' tall. Like most people who grew up in Cincinnati, my home park was, and still is, Kings Island. The main walkway when you enter the park, called International Street, was designed with shops and buildings to represent different European countries. When they were designing the buildings, the bottom level was full scale while the upper levels feature windows and doors that are only 3/4 scale. Interestingly, the buildings were all designed by former, legendary Disney Imagineer Bruce Bushman, who worked for Hanna Barberra and Taft Broadcasting, which built and owned Kings Island, after he left the Walt Disney Company. He unfortunately passed away in early 1972, so he never got to see International Street completed when Kings Island officially opened on May 27th 1972. However, he still played a major role in the development and history of both parks.

Nice summary. BTW, the reason the original Tomorrowland was set in 1986 was similar to the reason George Orwell picked "1984" for his book title (in 1948). They wanted a future where most of the original guests would probably still be alive, and would relate to it as being THEIR future, not just A future. The year 1986 was picked specifically since it was the year of Halley's Comet's return. I got that directly from John Hench during an interview in the early '90s. They wanted to work it into the original Moonliner attraction, but I'm not sure if they ever did.

Disney is the master at giving you something to do or look at while waiting for hours for a ride. Greatest thing, is the music. I remember learning about this in a science class in highschool. There is rarely not a place playing some sort of "mood setting" music. Most of the time that mood has subtle orchestration to make you feel happy and lighter a lot of high flute tones rarely anything ominous. And the few ominous music scores such as around Haunted Mansion instills a fun sort of dread rather than true fearful dread. It's minor, but music does a lot to the brain and setting the tone. And can trick you into feeling something without being fully aware of it. And it's kind of like you're in a movie, rarely in Disney movies is there no subtle score being played under a scene, so it adds to the charm.

We never use the term "no-see' em green." Disney fan sites do, but Disney designers do not. A no-see 'em is a bug, which, as an aside, does not exist in the inhabited parts of Orange County or Los Angeles. The term that we use is "Go-away green." And it's far from one shade of green. It's whatever color of green works at a given location. It's a shame that every time a video like this gets made, the incorrect information is never corrected. What did your friend expect at any disney park? Not trying to be rude, but crowds are going to be there in force. The lightest I've ever seen disney world is during the school season where the average wait times for rides like space mountain and big thunder mountain and the like is only 15 minutes. Once we got lucky during one of the hurricanes almost a decade ago and it rained like a monsoon, everyone got soaked and the outdoor rides got shut down, we were smart and just had a change of clothes for when the ponchos eventually let enough water through. The whole afternoon the park was nearly deserted and there was nearly no wait times on most of the rides after all the outdoor rides opened back up. They didn't even bother sending the wait time passes with guests so the rides still had the pre shutdown times on them xD 45 minutes to walk from the entrance of thunder mountain to the station. We must've rode that thing 3 or 4 times in a row. Sorry to hear about your friend, but if she doesn't mind getting wet, convince her to goto disney world during monsoon or hurricane season and bring a change of clothes.

Not only was the family given a gorgeous condo complete with a fully stocked fridge, almost every single amenity was available to them as well. It was a dream come true for my niece. As they reached the park and she soon learned that she'd be expected to use a wheelchair, she was horribly embarrassed and she balked (even though I don't know how she thought she'd be able to walk around Disney World). That is until she learned how advantageous that wheelchair was -- front of the line, baby! All in all, it was a wonderful, tremendous gift from Make-A-Wish Foundation. Disney is fun as an adult, too. Also, in EPCOT, you can get a drink in every "country."

Such a good video and one thing you didn't mention with sightlines is that most people don't realize that if you are at EPCOT and if you look at the Moroccan pavilion from the other side of the World Showcase Lagoon you are actually looking at Tower of Terror at Hollywood Studios as part of the sightline

I work for a company that builds switches for electrical grids, when Disney ordered from us we had to send them bare cabinets which they painted and sent back to us for final assembly. Pretty neat seeing that green color somewhere else, I hadn't seen it since I went to Disney when I was little.

Thanks for the video. I was at Disney World in Nov 2018 and speaking of immersion, Disney has set the new standard for other theme parks with Pandora - World of Avatar in Animal Kingdom. They have outdone themselves with the ride Avatar Flight of Passage. It is a totally immersive experience that combines all the senses to make it as realistic as possible, sight, sound, scent and touch. I rode the ride 5 times and every time was a unique transcending experience. You have to experience it to believe it.

Disney also uses Bromine instead of Chlorine in the water to treat it. Disney water smells different than plain ol' American water

I can't believe you didn't mention the music after you mentioned smell. that's probably the coolest bit of trivia I ever learned about the park

To mimic the feel of walking into a theater, the area just past the ticket entrance is shaped like a foyer and painted red (carpet), with doors on either side to feel like you are walking in to see a movie. As you walk in, you see billboards on the walls advertising the upcoming ride attractions, modeled like upcoming film marquees.

Disney is a show. There is onstage, offstage, the employees are called cast members, and they wear costumes.
