I still have a couch i bought when i first moved out of my parents house in 1999. Its been a good couch. everything in my living room matches it. I could see myself going down that road of getting a new one, and then realizing nothing matches and start down that road. I'm an impulse buyer, and i have to fight myself against that sometimes.

To be fair, people update apartments too to match new identities. Change out a couch, get a bigger TV, better bedding, fancier dishes, new car. With homes, it's the outside/yards that get you😅

Love the idea of living small, but big tickets just keep coming up. My dog needs medical care, my kid is graduating college, my car broke... things that can't be avoided or bought at a thrift store. I do all of those things and try to avoid the creep, but life just keeps getting more expensive than I expected. Less money saved, less money invested.

This is why I avoid the shopping cart at Costco. Only pay what I can carry😂

I think i was wired to avoid these flaws, however my wife not so much. How to get her to watch this is the challenge!

Again, all of this is made so much easier if you just budget. There are great apps that help you do that. It's a little bit of work, but the control it gives to you of your money and ability to optimize your life based on what you deem important, is priceless. I don't understand I people live without it.

Hmmm, I’ve been placing these exceptional items in my “Everything Else” budget line. I think I just figured out why that line item is experiencing the most creep.

Yes, based on the research studies, you'd want to move them to their own specific category instead of lumping them in with "everything else". Still keep all of the "exceptional expenses" together in 1 category (that way you think of them altogether), but move them out of the "everything else" category. See if that helps. It could also be an issue with under planning certain things in general. I've worked with a lot of people over the years on how they were spending/managing their money so I saw it all the time. The problem wasn't that they were "overspending", the problem was that they were under planning a more realistic number. It was like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
