doom doesn't have a decompilation because it didn't need one, its source code was officially released in 1999

There were decomps/reverse engineered versions of Grand Theft Auto 3 & Vice City released 2 years or so ago called RE3 & REVC that got taken down by Take Two due to them suing the people/person who made them, even though they should have been completely legal to be online.

@@LoreKeeperVG The Github page got DMCA'd take down so that happened at least, don't know if any lawsuit was filed or anything though. But yeah, they found it a threat to the crappy Defective Edition they released later in the year so they wanted to stop any potential monetary losses by falsely taking down those unofficial & way better versions so they wouldn't cut into sales & make the stuff they released look like a joke. (Which it did & still does, they should be ashamed the state it was in & how bad it was & still is really & definitely should've at least given the devs more time to work on it or scrap it entirely after they saw it wasn't finished & fully ready to be released)

iirc the reason the GTA decomps weren't safe is because they were using a leaked Renderware SDK in the effort.

Lots of misinfo here. RE3 and REVC used real source code that was accidentally left in some retail versions of GTA 3 and Vice City. Therefore they used copyrighted code and were subject to the treatment they got. I know it sucks bc those versions are my favorite to play but that's just how it was.

Well, Nintendo has just taken down Yuzu and Citra emulators. Not directly because of the emulators themselves, but for not taking action against game piracy before their release and for distributing games on their private servers. So it really reinforces what I say in the video, while also making it a bit outdated.

I am so hyped to know that there is a Halo: CE (Xbox version) being decompiled. The game engine is so old that no one knows how to use it to the fullest anymore, not even 343 Industries who took over and steward the game to this day, and they don’t know how it all works either.

I'm really happy to know it's being done. I hope we can get 2, 3, ODST, and Reach some day too. We were getting a version of Halo 3 before MCC came to PC but that got abandoned because of those ports. And now we're left with mediocre MCC versions and no project for it anymore.

As a reminder when talking about legality, different countries have different laws. Don't always take some randomer citing American laws as proof things are legal where you live. I love these PC ports. They've all become the definitive versions of their games. Played through both of the Jak ports, and I never intend to ever go back to the official versions.

Considering how many more mods and enhancements are possible with decompilations -- far more than is possible with rom hacks and emulators -- it seems like decompilation ought to be the end-game for all retro consoles (and some newer consoles too).

I find it interesting that the majority of definitions for piracy specifically state selling or distributing. I've always argued that for something to be theft, something has to be taken away from someone; and this can include revenue. Like if I download Tears of the Kingdom instead of buying it, that makes sense. Ain't nobody losing a dime if I download Fighting Force 64 though ahahaha. It couldn't even be argued that a person selling their copy would be out a sale, 'cause I already have a copy. Really starts getting into an area of where something might be "illegal" but it's arbitrary and protects no one.

That's why the act of downloading a copy itself isn't technically illegal from my understanding, but rather the distribution since that falls under copyright infringement. That's why Nintendo goes after ROM sites and not the people downloading ROMs. Of course, I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice, just my understanding of the matter.

If anything piracy enabled a lot of people to experience gaming and then pay for the products they actually like, or even become creators like indie games devs, which btw, often express they themselves know how it was to emulate a pirated copy of a game, and now they can pay to support works they love, if anything the thing that actually destroys the industry is that current CEOs have no idea of how people could be passionate about gaming, so instead they keep pushing for addicting mechanics instead of enjoyable ones like live service, fps with a rotating shop and items that are gone forever, battle royale and team shooters, all of these still are being pushed as if somehow, after all these current failures in gaming, people suddenly would say “Oh yes, now ill spend 50$ on a cosmetic for this game that didnt deliver on what they promised 2 years ago, and there are now news that they are firing everyone just to save money for the 3rd time this year”

There is so many games that I own that I sometimes wonder “It runs ok on console, but on pc it would run so much better”, guess this is possible if the game is popular enough with a dedicated fanbase, legalities aside, to this day for example, I still wonder how would a truly improved Sonic Adventure 1&2 be, with an actually good physics system that doesnt glitch all over, cutscenes that allow for actual lip sync, better models, CHAO GARDEN
