A very insightful introduction to the Chinese mindset of 'tian xia' that has directed China's economic and political strategies in the past, in the present, and presumably in the future. The book was a pleasure to read, thank you Mr. French!

18:20 That's not how languages work. It's a name. It's like calling people with the last name Fox sneaky.

well given that Foxconn was started by a guy who's father literally landed in Taiwan from China a year before he was born.... It's not a PRC company per say (at least, not yet.) but might as well be. As for Xinjiang Tibet, Tibet is a bit more complicated as it was mostly seen as a tribal wasteland that's only interest is the buddhism. but the ties went for pretty long especially when the dynasty rulers were minorities. In terms of rites Tibet was different from the other tributory states for almost the entire Qing which is something that should be noted, and it had a permanent official stationed there for most of the last dynasty that represented them in diplomacy matter. (so when the British invaded Tibet, they ended up talking to a Qing official.) the move to further consolidate Tibet (and Xinjiang for that matter.) came almost as a direct response to the encroachment of foreign powers. As for Xinjiang, the Chines dynasty even at the beginning, when they were strong, would try to dominate the silk road city states of the region. either directly or indirectly. there isn't a clear line drawn on where that ends (but there sort of is a line drawn on where it starts. ) that sort of depend on the dynasty and the period . in it's greatest extent in the Han / Tang period the dominance went significantly beyond modern Xinjiang's border. But that's kinda the story of central asia region between Iran and China in general . aka the Silk road city states, they almost always were dominated by one power or another, be it Persia or Hellenic kingdoms or China or Russia or(most often.) nomadic powers. HOWEVER, it should also be pointed out that even as early as the Han in 100 ish bc there were Han migrants into the region. by the Qing era (which came after a long period of the Chinese dynasty giving up influence on the region.) the population of Han chinese in what's modern Xinjiang were not insignificant. (5+% ish. )

If one removes the cultural norm of non aggression, this describes American foreign policy/ philosophy

You got the point. China: lead by virtue, US: lead by force. Other than that, they are almost same.
