I love what Howard Jacobson talks about in relation to magic. It's all around us and within us. We don't need magic wands or go to other planets.

This is good. I love UK authors & lit. I feel they're the ancestors of our language and Americans are the ugly stepchildren. US audiences embrace garbage like Twilight (no offense) because we're not taught to appreciate literature. It inhibits works published in American markets. Publishers demand genre fiction. I'm forced to fit formulas. It diminishes my love for writing. BBC- please do a show on that

Hmm ... I'm from the UK, and appreciate many British and Irish writers. But some of the greatest, I think: are American. Perhaps you are a little unfair to them? Maybe I'm going too far here, but I think that Phillip Roth and Charles Bukowski are just about on the level of Tolstoy and Dostoievsky. Great writers, American writers. So not everything is Twilight or N shades of ... . There is trash everywhere (the one universal), not just in America, and it is consumed everywhere.

I really wish, i could follow his advice as a new author i feel like a butcher compared to some of these guys.

Letting the writing cat out of the bag only serves a critic to give an unsolicited and perhaps unwarranted opinion. Think 'dentists'. One dentist will want to give you a couple of fillings; another a couple of fillings, an implant, cleaning, perhaps some scaffolding and sell you a handful of plastic toothbrushes when one made of bamboo will do !

I wish people would read more writers than HJ and less Andy McNabb/Chick Shit/Celeb drivel
