The story Stephen didn’t want Howard to tell was talked about on Stern’s show a couple days ago. Howard offered to give the first interview to Stephen before Jimmy because Stephen has better ratings. But Stephen knew that Howard and Jimmy were really close friends and Stephen told Howard to do Jimmy’s show first because he knew Jimmy needed the ratings and because of how close they were. That says so much about Stephen and how friends and relationships come before ratings. That says so much about Stephen’s character. Great interview by the way!

If you guys were wondering what the story Stephen didn't want Howard to tell, it was about his appearance on The Tonight Show with Fallon. In his radio show leading up to the promotional tour of his book Howard talked about dreading going on talk shows and two of the talk shows that wanted him on were Colbert and Fallon. Howard is friendly to both Colbert and Fallon and Howard thought that if he went on one show before the other that it might seem he's showing favoritism, that is not the case. He ended up doing a coin flip to see which show he would do first and the winner was Colbert. A few weeks later Howard was back on the radio talking about how bad and stressed he feels about doing Fallon's show second, although if Fallon won the coin toss he would feel bad that he was doing Stephen's show second. Stephen heard him on the radio and called Howard (off air)and told him to do Fallon first and he's OK with it. Howard actually tells this story on his appearance on Fallon.

So proud of Howard, He's evolved so much as a person. When people act like assholes, toward other people just for a laugh, it's almost always about there own insecurities. Howard has always been a comedic genius and one of the greatest interviewers of our time. After years of psychotherapy and addressing different forms of trauma from his childhood, he has a more positive outlook on life. Howard, now understands that his parents did the best they could, and that's all any of us are capable of. My own personal background has so many similar parallels to Stern, which is why I always found him relatable....In my opinion, he has managed to use his popularity and influence to become an advocate for therapy. There's always been such as negative stigma attached to mental health. Love is the greatest medicine there is. There's no better feeling than the human touch from people you connect with. I love Howard Stern. I remember listening to him on DC 101 back in the late 70s/early 80s. And his show on some cable channel back in the 90s. So outrageous, so intelligent. And Private Parts was hilarious. I look forward to reading the new book (and seeing the movie?) Thank you Stephen for this wonderful interview. Especially the extended version on KZbin

I would lock the rest of my media down if they did a newer full-swing interview together. With Colbert's comfortable appreciation for subtlety and direction And Stern being able to find someone's gut without just spraying bullets (anymore)

You would "lock the rest of my media down" why? Duuuuuuuude Howard's bullets are ice, they melt and leave NO TRACE

Stern is one of my favorite people to watch /, hear being interviewed or doing interviews (either way he flips it when he's being interviewed so a win win 100%). Love the fact that he does not shy away from anything, whatsoever, but the opposite whatever the subject he normalizes the idea notion and necessity to be open and vulnerable. Love it.

We are all better for having this interview in its entirety. So, so good. You should also check out the super sized interview he gave on Conan's podcast. Definitely one of the best interviews I've ever heard. Incredibly insightful and honest.

But that’s the format that launched him to number one...... His fans said they listened Stern a couple of hours a day. #1 reason why: they wanted to hear what he was going to say next..His haters listened twice as long.... #1 reason: They couldn’t wait to hear what he was going to say next. #BRILLIANT

Howard Stern is one fascinating person, I gotta say. I realized I never really watched any interviews of him. And upon watching this, I now know where my dad gets all his mannerisms from. My dad is a big Howard Stern fan. It all makes sense now :p

Wow. I've never really been a fan of Howard Stern. In fact, I kind of got turned off by him many years ago. This interview was fantastic. I see Howard in an entirely different light. He's grown up (matured really) and I could have listened to this interview if it had gone on for 5 hours. Man...excellent interview....both for Stephen and especially for Howard. Well done sirs!

I really love this interview. That exchange around the 22 minute mark is so interesting. They had a whole little side conversation going on there and Stern ultimately decided not to tell the story. The way they were acting, especially Stern leads you to believe that it was going to be a very flattering story about Colbert. For Colbert to be so protective makes me think it may involve a third party and the story may be embarrassing to them. I thought it was very cool that Stern clearly considered it and decided not to tell the story. That's the way it should be. We don't need to know fucking everything.
