this is the most inspirational video I've ever seen

A layout like this....you dont care if the trains arent running. Not just a huge layout, but an incredibly detailed sceniced one. Mad sick scenery....the bridges, carpets of greenery, the mountains, the buildings...every man-boys dream layout that the rest of us can only aspire to. Just....WOW!

I had the pleasure of seeing this layout in person 2 yrs ago and its a must see for anyone interested in modelling or in engineering. Every engine is brass and every structure is scratch built by Mr Zane in his workshop he has a museum as well with a world class collection of engines. Hes also one of the nicest guys ever i never knew him or met him and i talked to him thru email and he offered me to come see his layout so that was special in its self. Thanks for sharing this - Matt

An absolutely amazing layout and even better to see in person. I have been very fortunate to see this layout in person several times from the original before Howard added on to his basement with living space above which he’s done twice that I know of. The “hidden” little details that you catch on your 3rd or 4th time looking at a particular scene are everywhere and equate to a modern Easter egg in a video.

The attention to detail, and natural blending of manmade objects and forests makes the difference between observing a model, vs getting lost in the beauty and authenticity of the scenes. Master craftsman work for sure.

I was lucky enough to meet Howard back in the late 90s at one of his shows at the MD state fair grounds. I went to the show to pickup some brass engines from the late Bob Brass and Howard was there. He talked to me for about 30 minutes just like we were old friends, and this was the only time I had met him. I hope he is safe and well.

Howard, I consider myself to be a pretty dam good model detailer, either working on planes,ships or my favorite HO set up. My friend you nailed. It's like standing in time. I can watch this all day long. My layout isn't ever done but, it's PERIOD CORRECT. Everything has to be from around 1963 and earlier. Including the phone booths. Lol ....Very well done. When the time comes this treasure should should be in the Smithsonian for all to appreciate. Put it on a dvd, so we could relax and dream. You could stop and magnify scenes that interest you. You sir are an artist of the first degree

MY GOD...this is one of the most amazing things ive ever seen...........I can only imagine how much JUST THE TREES must have cost, even if he found them outside and then used spray adhesive and simple tree fluff from a normal source like Woodland Scenics... LET ALONE the absolutely HUGE mountains TONS of greenery on those mountains and intricately detailed cities. Everything has been weathered, painted and modded to look more real, and then tons of people and random little greeblies added too

When I see a massive work of art like this, I wonder what long range plans the designer/builder made for its future. This one does not look like it would be easy to move to a rail museum, for example. Hard for widow to sell a house with something like that in the basement. If it doesn't get preserved, the modeling world loses, like the loss of John Allen's.
@inkblot1314 жыл бұрын
"...like the loss of John Allen's." And my father's as well. My pop was a DAV. In all probability, his past made him accepting of an abrupt end. He enjoyed his hobby.., and died suddenly. It was his 2nd family who lived then and continued to live with no joy, no pop, no magnificent little world it could have been used as a 'real town & country in any movie. Twenty x forty-foot, hand-dug, hand-poured concrete basement (from a crawl-space!) They sold the house, someone ripped every particle that wasn't concrete, plumbing, house wiring, or the furnace. No traces left. I would have advertised the home in every MRR mag, or show, and, or club I could find.., had I been invited or asked for advice.

At 7:35... What is the round-about turn-style called? That turns and can park the 🚂🚂🚂trains in the garage? So cool... I always wanted that part as a kid. Never got it because it was like $150 dollars and my parents said that would by like 80 feet of straight track. 🚂

if hes anything like other model railroaders I have met, he was probably dumbfounded why you didnt ask him to run something. Being how big this layout is and how vast his roster of trains, he probably wanted to show them off.
@rcgrabbag7 жыл бұрын
If that were the case, I'd expect he'd volunteer to run something. From what I understand, it's usually a team effort to get trains up and running on his layout. Turnouts need to be set and parked trains moved out of the way, etc., so train running is limited to special nights with his good buddies.

*jaw drops at the opening sequence* ....this must be the largest privately owned railroad in the country.... my GOD I am just trying to wrap my head around how one man could do all this... its club sized..... not to mention how deep it is, how does he service and work on the parts in the back areas? they are way out of arm's reach.

Howard Zane is right up there with Rembrandt, Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, et al. In fact, the SCALE of his acheivement should make it one of the wonders of the art world. John Allen's layout was impressive, but this, in my humble opinion, is even better. I cannot get over the level of detail everywhere you look. I agree with others that this MUST NOT DISAPPEAR after Howard. (may he live to be 100) Too important.
