'Spectacular', is a major understatement. Wonderfully stunning, is getting close. This is THE BEST, model train layout I've seen in a very long time, if ever!!! What caught my attention, was not necessary the rolling stock, but the rest of the scenery, is what makes this layout breathtaking!!! Really impressed with the retro trucks, and busses. EVERYTHING😉👏👍!!

AWESOME!!! Howard Zane's style of building model railroad layouts is similar to that of George Sellios'. But, Howard likes to have natural surroundings on his pike while George prefer city scenes with lots of buildings. This layout is beautiful and looks very realistic. It was first featured in MR - April 1993 (1st section completed for the 3rd time). Then again in MR - February 2004 (after 2nd section built). Then featured in RMC - Oct 2006, and again in Jan 2007 (after the 3rd section was done). Last featured again in MR in the February 2020 issue after Howard changed the entire layout and rail lines to North eastern PA, and Northern NJ. Check them out. Many of the pictures were from Howard's book which was released in 2006 (I think).

Why do you keep calling out locations in "West Virginia"? All the equipment, especially cabooses, seem to be lettered for "Erie R.R." Was there a fictional branch into The Mountain State? I'm just curious.

@@alpugliesetrains9753 - So you just set the Erie in C&O, VGN, and N&W country? I didn't realize that. I once started a model railroad based on the idea that the Pennsylvania R.R. had completed the South Penn R.R. after buying it from William H. Vanderbilt in 1885. For example, I planned to eventually design a 4-8-4 (Class R) as if Pennsylvania had needed a loco that could move fast freight up a 2% grade (compared to 1.45% on the Horseshoe Curve route), i.e., something more powerful than the M-1a 4-8-2 locos. Alternative railroad history can have fascinating implications.
