Early SNL alumni all say Belushi was funniest, but fans determine stars. We chose Chase as the breakout star and we were right. Belushi may have been a genius and may have been the funniest guy in regular life, and may have been the most versatile - much like Dana Carvey later - but that does not make him the best comedic actor. There was no one thing he did that was as funny and screenwritable as Chevy's conceited/goofy/mischievous personality. The end game is movies. Sketch comedy, radio, stand up - lots of things get you there, but movies are the destination for stars and Chevy was a bigger star.

Gilda and Bill Murray lived together and had full-blown relationship. According to SNL bio, the women of SNL felt especially disrespected by Chevy ( Belushi too, but Chevy's animus stung more because he was 'the star’ and Lorne Michaels was doing somersaults to please Chevy who was being heavily courted by Hollywood). One typical incident of disrespect allegedly occurred when Chevy returned in the 2nd year as guest host and displaced Jane Curtin as weekend update anchor because he felt he could deliver the lines better than a woman.

In Chevy's defense, he has acknowledged being insensitive during this period saying this was at least partially due to huge rush of sudden fame, demands on his time by Lorne and burgeoning film career, recreational drug use and turbulence in romantic relationship .

Lots of talented actors on SNL to be sure, but...when you put the Movie Star component into the mix, you can't help but pick Chevy Chase as the winner hands down. He had all of the necessary components: Talent, Good Looks, Tall Stature, Charm, Wit, Delivery, Musical Talent and that "je ne sais quois..." So, all the others were really good, but they did not have Chevy's "Star Quality." He transcended the characters he played whereas the others were just really good actors in their respective roles.

These guys have always had a reputation for causing on set conflicts. Chevy Chase is notorious for being difficult and Murray is no saint either. He didnt get along with Richard Dreyfuss during the making of What About Bob? as well as Lucy Liu and director McG on Charlie's Angels. Also according to Laura Ziskin producer of What About Bob? Bill Murray broke her sunglasses in a fit of rage and threatened to throw her in a lake. They are such funny, talented guys that unfortunately have hidden anger issues so it never surprised me from the get go when I found out they didnt get along. At least we have their brief scene in Caddyshack to see even though very briefly how funny they are together.
