The more polyphonic instruments you add like extra guitars and keys, the more the frequency range can get crowded and instruments have to compete with each other. A power trio can have more clarity as each instrument has their own space.

The four guys in Golden Earring has also played together since 1970. They did have some line-up changes the first years of their career (which started in 1961!) and some additional members along the way. But the four members that play together as Golden Earring today has been with the band since 1970. As a band with all original members still in the band, and never had any aditional members, ZZ Top are in their own league though.

I used to see Dusty Hill in a small hole in the wall bar on Houston's west side all the time in mid 80's. The place never had more than 5-10 people in it. After work me and another guy would go over there and drink dollar draft beer and shoot pool. Dusty's girlfriend was the bartender but he'd come over and shoot pool with us. Pretty down to earth for a mega superstar.
