Nice video Ryan, I haven't seen a belt baler in years, we all use roller round balers in Ireland, ours is an older Welger RP 200, they are bomb proof if looked after. A baler breaking down in the field and rain coming is not a nice situation to be in.

The book says you can leave the pto on when ejecting a bale. We never used to do it but it is actually better for the tractor. I slow the engine down when dropping one out then speed it back up when I take off. just my 2 cents.

I like big square bales because it's lighter and cheaper then the round bales u can bale wet hay with a round baler because it it packed tight when the net is on it and it's heavier my uncle use to have a round baler until he started to bale hay on a hill and a round bale went down the hill and into a highway

How does the netting stay on the bale? How many wraps of the netting, before the bale is ejected? Maybe the multiple wraps is enough to keep it in place.... just asking.
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 6 жыл бұрын
Yes the net kind of "locks in" on to itself, and locks into the ends of stems of hay on the surface of the bale, and once the bale is on the ground, it's "pinched" between the bale and ground as well. It is stretched slightly as it's applied, and the tension of it trying to "spring back" pulls it tightly against the bale and locks it into place... Later! OL J R :)

ok I have what may be a silly question. why do people leave round bales outside? when I was younger (been away from farms for a long long time) the idea of leaving hay outside would get you a smack in the head or worse but now days I always see round bales outside, are they different? ideas changed over the years? It was always cut, bale, dry, and get in inside before the rain when I was a kid. or at least thats how I remember it.
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 6 жыл бұрын
Round bales shed water like a thatch roof... so long as the bales are tight and the hay is dense (fine stemmed-- the coarser the stems the deeper the water penetrates into the bale) the water will mostly run off the curved outer surface of the bale. Round bales typically suffer more damage from the part of the bale in contact with the ground wicking up moisture than it will from rainfall running off the outside. That said, proper placement and storage of round bales outside is absolutely necessary to minimize storage losses and preserve as much quality in the hay as possible. Round bales should be stored flat end to flat end tight together on high, dry, well drained ground. Actually some studies now say it's better to space the bales a foot or two apart flat end to flat end to allow airflow, but I question that due to the additional weathering of the flat ends of the bale. So long as the bales are even (not barrel or wedge shaped) and stacked tightly together and are the same size, the ends will pretty well "seal off" against the next bale and the ends will stay dry and clean. If they aren't, water can get between the bales and make a mess. It's best to store bales up off the ground, either on coarse crushed rock, old electric utility poles, pallets, old tires, etc. Anything to provide a little air space between the ground and the bottom of the bale, to prevent moisture wicking up into the bottom layers of the bale from the soil underneath. If round bales are to be stacked in multiple layer pyramid rows, they MUST be tarped to prevent moisture from running off the top row and down in between the top row and the rows underneath, causing rot. It's also a good idea to put boards onto the outside of the bales to prevent the tarps from coming into direct contact with the bales, as the tarps tend to "sweat" as they collect and condense moisture coming out of the hay or in the air, and then trap that moisture against the outer layer of the bale if in direct contact, causing mold and mildew. Of course it's best to store round bales inside to push losses to an absolute minimum and preserve the maximum quality, but it isn't strictly necessary as it is with small square or even large square bales, which do NOT shed enough water on their own to store outdoors unprotected. That's one of the advantages of round bales, in that they do not specifically require a storage barn or building or even tarping, unlike square bales. The cost and horsepower requirements of a round baler is also MUCH less than large square bales, while still creating a large, heavy package of hay that is more efficient to move than small squares (but less than large squares). Later! OL J R :)

round bales can be left out in the rain more than a square bale sue to the netting and shape allowing the water to run off and only getting a cm or so into the bale over time, whereas square bales need to be under a barn or tarp pretty quickly because of the flaps not being tight enough to stop water penetrating
@recycler77
@recycler77 8 жыл бұрын
tom Parker Thank you for the info. I know there is a system were the single bales get wrapped almost airtight in silage tarp/film, but that method seems to comes with some issue's, were those bales becomes unusable. regards rec
@tomparker3722
@tomparker3722 8 жыл бұрын
+recycler77 when wrapping round bales (and now square bales) you want the grass to be fairly green instead of dry like hay as you want to store the sugars within the grass making it like silage. But the only problem I know of is when the wrap gets punctured from birds continuously perching, the bale will rot over time

Not being up on round bailers, are the new generation of round bailers the same, where you have to stop and backup to eject the bail? Seems like they should be able to come up with a method of having the bail pushed back into an ejection chute, without having to stop and backup to eject. I don't know about anyone else, but that inefficiency would have me so annoyed by the end of the day, I wouldn't be able to go home for fear of taking my anger out on the wife, kids, or dog!
@jaytonjones4498

You can buy balers with a kicker arm but in situations where you're baling on uneven terrain it's best to not have one. You can't really stop a bale once it gets rolling.
@farming4g
@farming4g 8 жыл бұрын
Most newer balers have kickers or ramps, so there is no need to backup, except if it's on a steep grade.. There is some prototypes for some continuous round balers, which includes Vermeer and Lely.
@ih1206
@ih1206 8 жыл бұрын
You would still have to stop to let the bale wrap or tie either way you turn it. I don't disagree with that being an inefficiency, but that's the nature of the beast. I don't know of any system where you can run continuously on round balers.
