I think busking (street performance) is illegal but people do it anyway? Something like that. When my brother (kzbin.info) busks in Japan he is often moved on by the police but the reason is because too many people gather around him and that's what the police don't like (they kinda miss the point of street performance haha). So if you are a terrible busker and no one stops and listens to you - the police won't bother you, but if you are great, the police will get annoyed that people stopped and gathered around. He was even taken to the police station before where they searched him and went through his bag and everything, trying to pin something on him. Finally one of the better policemen were like "this is ridiculous, just let the kid go".

+limelyx In here Finland we also have that same one chain system and also they want to check ID at your friends too. Alcohol is very expensive at this chain "Alko" but this type of arrangement does not work, we drink very much even at underage. And we buy our cheap alcohol from Estonia and they have our tax money. Our goverment health office even claims that we have genes to drink too much. I think it's all about culture, prohibition law doesn't work like we have seen at early 1900s.

I'm German, and I detest the Japanese umbrella culture. There are two problems I have. 1. In Germany people only very rarely use umbrellas. It's not that we don't get rain often, is that people either don't care if they get a bit wet, or they wear weather-proof jackets with a hood. In Japan, people whip out their umbrellas as soon as just one molecule of liquid H₂O touches their heads. That might be okay, but 2. I am pretty tall. Much taller than the average Japanese person, and my eyes are on perfect poking height for Japanese umbrellas. I really did get a few spokes in my eyes from inconsiderate umbrellists. And even if people tried to be considerate and try to lift their umbrellas over my head, it results in this super awkward motion for them, because they have to lift their arm way up. Makes me feel awkward for their inconvenience. Maybe it's the culture I grew up in, but I find umbrellas ultimately impractical. They take up one hand. I wouldn't be able to use my phone, walk the dog, and have an umbrella at the same time, for example. I'd rather get a bit wet. Umbrellas are stupid.
@Chris-jo1zr8 жыл бұрын
I get you there. In the Philippines, malls allow umbrellas to be left at the designated area for leaving your other belongings for a while. They clip numbers on them and then give you a number card that's the same w/ the number that they clipped on your umbrella. When its the monsoon season, they still do this practice but make an area specifically for soaking umbrellas.....

In Germany they check ID cards more strictly. Sometimes even the Ordnungsamt (It's like a city Police with less legal power, they basically only give fines to people) is standing in front of a store and they check the IDs. When they get caught the one that sold the alcohol to a under 16 year old (or under 18 year old for strong alcohol) person has to pay a quite big fine.
@maratesfaye8 жыл бұрын
Oh interesting, I've never seen anyone police-ish check like that, I've only seen cashiers check IDs xD
@szoszk8 жыл бұрын
Mari Bæ I've never seen that too, but a cashier in a store said that after she didn't want to sell alcohol to a young person without an ID, because it happened to her. The first fine is around 200€ and if you do it again it's around 3000€, which is about 2 to 3 months worth of work in a supermarket. And you risk being fired.

I'm surprised you didn't mention biking on the sidewalks! I've been told that the rule is that you're supposed to ride in the street unless there's a special bike lane on the sidewalk, but I almost *never* see anyone doing it. They're always on the sidewalk. Also, I always listen to music while I bike. :P But it's just through one ear bud so no one notices. And you know... for safety.
@BettyBird9 жыл бұрын
DeplorableBird Interesting here you can ride on the sidewalks as long as it's not in a "business district" area only reason I know this is my nephew did it and ran into the side of car that didn't honk his horn coming through an alley.
@becciKeks9 жыл бұрын
+DeplorableBird In Germany you are allowed to use the sidewalk to the age of 12, I think. Then you have to use the road. I'm living in a town where everbody uses bikes, so there are a lot of bikelanes, but in my hometown there weren't any of them, because it is build in a mountain area and you just use your bike for fun and not for actually going somewhere. But we had training with the police as kids in the third grade, I think, how to drive safely on the road and how to behave. We also had to do a test and got our "biking license" and a sticker for our bikes, which was pretty cool :D Fun fact: in Kindergarten we also did some "pedestrian lessons" with the police and the kindergarten staff and learned how to behave at traffic lights and so on. We also got a "Pedestrian license" :D But I don't know if this is common for whole of Germany or just the part I live in :D
@chaos94949 жыл бұрын
Superminion A biking license! That sounds so cute! XD (And actually useful.) Biking for travel is pretty uncommon where I grew up (California), so we never got to do anything like that. I'd actually be really afraid to ride a bike in the street in my hometown!

I find they always steal my umbrellas if they are the cheep "konbini" (convenience store) ones, but never the expensive ones! I've also heard that police are more strict on foreigners breaking the bicycle rules than locals. The philosophy of policing is totally different here in Japan than "the West". Generally police here avoid enforcing the law on what they consider minor things, because they feel it might actually antagonize people in to being more rebellious. They would rather keep the country "peaceful" than go around busting people for petty things. In "The West" these days the aim of the police seems to be to raise as much venue for the local/state/federal government as possible through fines. BTW I think Ryan Boundless needs to watch this video, because he seems to think everyone in Japan is so law abiding.

Just a suggestion grab a few umbrella covers and keep them in your purse/bag and use them instead of parking your umbrella outside .

What about biking on the sidewalk? That was by far the most annoying thing when I was in Japan. I almost got run over multiple times.

The drinking while biking rule is really funny for me because in the city that I live in, breweries actually have these weird, bikes where lots of people can ride at once. and groups just ride on that bike drinking. and when it rains, the bike gets a giant umbrella on top.

"She took my umbrella so I had to take someone elses'"? You didn't "have to", just like the lady before you didn't "have to" either :s if you think it's wrong, why do it yourself?

You kinda have to unfortunatly, Once I had placed my umbrella in the rack &it was FULL of other umbrellas & by the time I was leaving store there was only one ugly umbrella left :( and it was raining!

Jimcrv that's how it is in Japan, people don't think much of it. When it starts pouring and they don't have an umbrella they just take the one you left in front of the store, you take a stranger's because yours is stolen, stranger takes another person's umbrella and so on. Umbrellas as they mentioned are almost identical and also cheap so people don't make much of it.
@3DJapan9 жыл бұрын
Jimcrv The question is, if they all look alike, how do you even know you're taking someone elses? or how do you know someone took yours?
@shiruluv9 жыл бұрын
well either you have to memorize where you put it, or tie a ribbon on it, but tbh people don't really care what they are taking. I remember leaving a small umbrella and going home with a gigantic one, because the handle looked identical.

I've broken all of those rules, lol. Minus the stealing umbrella thing. I had no idea that riding with an umbrella is illegal...I did it ALL that time, but I've never been stopped for it, lol.

The stealing of umbrellas really annoyed me to no end. I really like the design of those cheap umbrellas so I hate loosing them, so once I put a お守り on it and it got stollen anyway! I was pissed off for a month afterwards.

My friends bought me a mecha expensive umbrella and I went to work (at Mitsubishi Semiconductor, a big company near Osaka at the time) on a vacation day and someone stole it! Also, someone stole an umbrella from me at a restaurant in Osaka and one of the motorcycle store owners I was hanging out with (a semi-rough crowd when they were younger) told me to go back in and take the best one left in the stand.

Hang on... what amazed me most about this video is the fact that "his beard makes him look unemployed". Wow.... just wow.
@JunkieHeretic8 жыл бұрын
In Japan, most companies that are 'regular, day job' companies, you would not have that facial hair. Period. So when people see facial hair, a lot of the time they may assume low-class job or unemployed.

TheBushdoctor68 I wonder if foreigners get away with it more. I hate shaving every day.
@Ausar07 жыл бұрын
NeoFryBoy right? maybe I'm just not good at it, but shaving takes up a LOT of time and is actually annoying because of that. and then my minor perfectionism kicks in and I can't stop shaving until I literally can't feel any hair whatsoever. Even if it's not visible at all, I still try to shave it. This is why I had a beard for the longest time, but it kinda just turned into a weird neckbeard.

Nice, informative, and entertaining video, as always. What I found especially interesting, however, were the amount of signs "mounted" on the ground. I'm not used to that. I mean, (1) isn't it better to keep it at eye level? and (2) what about foot traffic? Won't those signs wear out quickly?

It's illegal to bike listening to music?! I can't imagine doing my daily commute without music.
@aidanblackett89308 жыл бұрын
ZeroHBR I can kinda understand where they're coming from I mean I'm always listening to music but whenever I'm riding I always have one earpiece out incase someone decides to irrationally scream an insult at me for not wearing a helmet or honk their horn because they weren't paying enough attention to the guy riding in the bike lane.

When I was there a couple of months ago, in Tokyo and Osaka, I was quite surprised at how many people smoked - but to be fair, most of the time we were always near train stations, so that kind of explains it! I was really impressed at how clean everything was. We only saw one wall with graffiti on it (in Tokyo). We were there for two weeks and I really want to go back. There are so many incredible things to see and do and you just can't get to them all in two weeks. I'd like to return to Osaka and see more of Kyoto, and also see Hiroshima and the Itsukushima shrine.

I must ask, where in Texas are you from? I was born in Willis/Conroe, about an hours outside of Houston. I've been trying to convince my wife that we should vacation to Japan, but flying fro Vermont to Japan is amazingly expensive! Your vidoes are super cute and very informative, so thank you for them!

Riding a bike drunk is illegal in the states too. It is a DWI. You are supposed to follow all traffic laws like a car. Anything you can get driving, you in theory can get on a peddle bike.

Yes, when I lived in North Carolina, there was a guy who took his riding lawnmower into town and got a DWI. People said he'd sometimes be seen riding his horse too.
