About halfway from Natural Bridge to the Bridge Bay Marina, we encountered two coyotes. They howl and yip before descending toward us.

He came towards you because you turned your back and started walking. Coyotes are very curious and opportunistic, but you were in zero danger. Scaring them off when they approach is the right thing to do, so good on dad. They not attack people, but there’s no sense letting them get that comfortable with humans. Beautiful video. Their calls are both eerie and beautiful.

The Canadian folk singer that was killed and partially eaten by two coyotes in a national park/forest in Canada, in broad daylight would probably disagree. There are trail cam videos of them trailing, stalking, killing, and eating her. We've had coyotes stalking children down here in TX. People who say coyotes aren't a threat to people have never watched them eat a deer before its dead, or been within 10 feet of 6 coyotes in a fog so thick you can only see 3 feet. As coyotes interact more often with humans, and have no negative consequences in return, they lose fear of humans. Add that to the fact that around humans they find cats, small dogs, pet food, and trash, all with human scent has led them to associate humans with food, and it doesn't take much to make them associate humans as food. There is a reason that Coyotes have spread from the desert southwest when Europeans first arrived to currently ranging all over North America. They are adaptive, clever, tough, and resilient.

That Coyote was telling his pack you was there and to come back. Coyotes are smart and sneaky af they can make about 11 different sounds and each one means something different That's how they communicate to the pack. I love when they do the bait and switch on a prey. They usually won't attack human, but never turn your back on any wild life

My grandpa went moose hunting in Canada and all the sudden a bunch of wolves started making noise around him. Native Americans told him " they didn't even know u were there, they probably smelled a deer n they were calling eachother together to hunt"

So after he told me this I'm in the national forest, cooking steak on the fire for all of my friends while they're inside, n I start hearing coyotes all over the place. I'm like "hell naw, they smell my food" best believe them steaks was rare when I pulled them off, I've seen raccoons attack people for food a pack of coyotes a eat you if they're hungry enough

I was sleeping on night and around 2:30 to maybe 3 in the morning, I heard this high pitched howling sound about maybe 15 feet away from my house. A few of the dogs we had started howling as the coyotes were howling like they were communicating. The way the dogs were howling, it's like they were telling the coyotes to get lost or something. My stepfather was awake at the time and he heard it too. I went out to the kitchen to get a drink and he was looking out the window By the kitchen sink. I asked him "you heard it, too?" He said "sure did" He said it sent chills down his spine. Which I could see his point.

I've got friends in Phoenix and family in Tucson. I live in Kentucky. It always amazes me how different coyotes in the western desert behave compared to their eastern woodland and urban/suburban counterparts. Their vocalizations are so much more haunting sounding and carry so much further that it seems like they're much more numerous in Arizona. In Kentucky you here less of the distant chorus of howls and a lot more of barks, family unit yips, and howl and response between lone males. When you're calling them in, sometimes they make this crazy hyena like laughter that sometimes almost morphs into words.
@PhilAndersonOutside Жыл бұрын
Lived in AZ for a bit, NV as well. Traveled throughout the SW and saw many of them in the wild. Never once felt threatened. On a winter hike deep into the Bisti/DeNaZin Wilderness of NM saw no humans, but one coyote coming out, which was like a spiritual connection. They are majestic, indeed. Revered for centuries by the Native Americans for their resiliency. To hear them howl, especially when camping in the wild at night, is magic (where they sound closer than they usually are, but aren't too far away!).

Coyotes are the most resilient mammals on Earth. Even in America where you can kill them, their population continues to grow. I was walking home through downtown Nashville several nights ago and saw one just walking along the street, probably just starting his day. I nodded, he nodded back, and we both went on our way. Coyotes and humans in North America. Like two ships passing in the night.

We have thousands of them in Chicago with very few issues. They stay away from people and usually are nocturnal. They weigh about 35 pounds so most dogs here are the same size or larger. You can hear this in the campground at the MN festival. I'm told they wander the grounds at night during the week when there's less people. My guess is later in the day as they tend to wander most active at night. That call was the equivalent of "I FOUND A THING! WHAT IS THIS THING? I DON'T KNOW BUT ITS ALIVE! SHOULD WE EAT IT? ITS KINDA BIG! OK! BE CAREFUL!"
@missy88889 жыл бұрын
David Rust The one on the right came down to the road, following us along the lefthand treeline until it was about 30 feet away. The other one went back into the forest. The closer one stood in the middle of the road, and my dad banged a stick on the ground while the coyote looked at us if to say "this is boring" and it ran back up the hill. It was pretty scary...it could've easily attacked us.
