This video is the most accurate videos regarding AiMeshing ASUS routers. You not only show how to create a meshed system, but, you, and only you - so far -, explain HOW TO convert a router into a node ... very important part of creating a meshed system. And, your video isn't a lot of "blah-blah-blah", "... like my video ..." Thank you!

Thank you!! Your video helped solve a dilemma I had last week. The need arose to temporarily extend the wifi in a seniors recreational center that I do some IT work for and I had tried a couple of brands of wall plug extenders to no avail. In searching for reasonably priced alternatives to the wall plug extenders, I came across your video, It just so happens I'd replaced their aging router with an AC68U a few months ago. I saw the AiMesh button when I was setting up but didn't know what it was and since there was no need to extend range at that time, I didn't give it another thought. Once I saw your video, I decided AiMesh was probably my best option so I obtained a second AC68U and set it up as a node according to your very easy to understand instructions. Wow! Worked like a charm! After finding the best spot to locate it using a wifi analyzer, I plugged it in, waited a few minutes for it to connect to the base router then started running some tests. The area that previously was barely able to see the base signal and was constantly dropping out now had a full five bars of solid, uninterrupted wifi signal. Thanks again!

Excellent technical video, clear and to the point! I knew someone had to have made a YT video explaining Mesh setup that would save me time setting it up. I watched 2 other videos with some dudes that acted like they knew what they were talking but showed zero real setup details for Mesh & completley left out that you can use WiFi and Ethernet combination for the nodes.

I have an 88u as my main and was running a 68u as my repeater running Merlin software, I have had issues with my repeater not transmitting on occasion and but recently my 68u lost connectivity and only the 88U was working. I tried a backup 68u I have and still no go, I ended up going back to asus firmware and now running AIMESH. What a difference, I have quite a few IP cameras running on my system and this has been the most stable my cameras have ever been since I can remember. AIMESH has simplified and made my network so much more stable, I am loving it.

One Note. Asus is actively working to prevent using t-mobile branded routers with asus firmware. As of March 2019, several tech pages are reporting that this is virtually impossible to use the latest asus firmware on the t-mobile branded routers. But Thank you so much for the clear and easy to follow instructions on AiMesh. I found this much easier to follow than the actual asus instructional video and web page.

I set it up today - such a seamless install. I have a switch upstairs so plugged it in on Ethernet, it set itself up and now I have full signal everywhere in the home, no settings or anything on the aimesh node. Great video explaining it! Waiting on AiMesh 2.0 to come out now with 386 firmware, should provide a better insight into how everything is connected :)

Thanks to your great videos I now have 5 RT-AC68U & 1 DSL-AC68U In AiMesh configuration around my House, system works good using the 2.4Ghz backhaul. it did take a while purchasing these as 2nd hand and the DSL-AC68U was a mistake buy, however the firmware by Asus was upgraded I believe a couple of months ago so its working ok. I have 38 device's connected including 4K Swann CCTV, Eufy doorbell, Alarm system smart plugs and Central heating sensors etc. Thank you again for your help in explaining how the AiMesh ayatem works. 😊

This helped me a lot but there's one thing nobody mentioned was how to update the firmware on your new router when you don't have computer with Ethernet port. Didn't know how I could connect it to do upgrade. Tried connecting the new router to modem and doing it with wifi but didn't work. I have two AC5300s. Been using one for a year and decided to get another for aimesh node in my home. Figured I better stick with Tri-band routers to make things right. Well anyway I figured it out and it works great. Appreciate the video.

This is also VERY important to point out (network engineer knowledge): By connecting two routers together via an ethernet cable rather than having the 2nd router connect over wifi, it causes the router to use one less hop. If you are a gamer this is CRITICAL for your ping. If you have the two routers connect over wifi you will ALWAYS lose half of your response time if your laptop/desktop PC is getting the repeated signal from the 2nd router. This is common sense but networking noobs don't understand this.

Fantastic video - the best on this subject by far. Having just set my AiMesh up I do have a few questions: 1. Is the only Asus GUI that is accessible the main router? 2. I have MAC filtering enabled on my router's wireless, is this also automatically applied to wireless clients trying to connect to an AiMesh node?

Just subscribed a couple days ago after watching all your Asus videos. Started watch the others as we speak. One QUESTION as I cant find it listed the comments. Im running the ASUS AC3100. I am going to add a AC86U as my node. (I picked it as Asus tech support said its range for wifi is superior than the lower models. We will see!) I plan to connect these with Cat 6A. The main purpose of the AC86U is for my wifi but can I use the LAN ports when its set up a a node??? Will the AC86U lan ports at like a switch when its in node mode or do they work at all?? Thanks
@Behfor
@Behfor 4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for subscribing :-) The answer to your question is yes, the LAN ports would work like a switch on the nodes and you can use them to connect your wired devices to the network/internet. Cheers :-)

You're so good explaining! So I can connect an ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX1100 directly to my ISP provider's WAN port, anywhere in my home, setting it up via Asus Router app as main router and then connect two ASUS RT-AC86U elsewhere in the home, or must they be connected via the main router? No need setting up network key password, other then your main router in your AiMesh system? I'm planning to connect multiple devices on these routers using internet cables. Only the main/ primary router is going to be used as WiFi. Do you happen to know if ASUS ROG GT-AX1100 works well on none WiFi 6 devices? :) Then I don't setup up these RT-AC86U as 'Nodes', right?

I agree with your statement about the best router; I've tried both eero and orbi mesh routers and they don't match the wireless speed of the Asus that I was "going" to replace. Question - can these 2 or 3 Asus routers being connected with a wired connection that passes through a switch before reaching the primary router? My house has network wiring to a central panel with a switch. Thanks

Thanks for the detailed video, you got a new sub! I actually recently setup 2 new AC-1900s that I was able to follow a guide to convert them to AC68U. Only issue is I cannot get my router to detect the node no matter what I try. Then I read that if I did that mod it's possible I have a Mac address conflict and I need to edit the Mac addresses in the CFE using a hex editor. Not sure if this is something you have experience with or have heard about. So for me, so far no AiMesh working but my router works fine in single router mode, and I was able to upgrade to the latest Asus firmware that was released on 5/22. My mod wasn't undone but I still cannot enable AiMesh because my node refuses to be detected. Going to keep investigating. Thanks again man!

Thank you so much for subscribing man! I do really appreciate it! I actually had the same issue and I followed a guide by "bay area tech pros" and everything worked out fine. If you just google "flashing ac1900 to rt-ac68u" you'll find their page. You might also want to go through the comments because I remember one of the steps was not working for me then I found something in the comments that fixed it. Let me know how it goes! Good luck!

Just a quick update, my issue was eventually resolved after updating to the latest ASUS firmware (from 6/1/2018). As soon as I updated both routers, the node was detected for AiMesh. I successfully setup the mesh network, and ran some basic tests and everything seems to be working great! Turns out I didn't have to modify the MAC address in the CFE because both my routers did have unique MAC addresses after flashing them to RT-AC68U (using the bay area tech pros guide). But I updated the MAC in the CFE anyway so that it matches the MAC physically written on the routers themselves. Very happy so far! Hopefully soon there is a Merlin release that supports AiMesh because to me the stock ASUS firmware definitely has weaker range (I believe Merlin overclocks the CPU and transmitters?). Anyways thanks again for the help, man!

I have a question. I have an AX-U58, and am looking to get a second one to set up an AImesh. Fore the node, I cannot connect via Ethernet cable, so the node will be wireless. Once connected, will the Ethernet ports on the node be active and working to use to connect a printer via Ethernet?

Excellent info. I had to change my router setting to switch at -55 as well which worked. I notice now though that if I stream shows from my dish network to my macbook it just freezes with what seems like less signal even though its better (from -65 to -45). I am not sure if there is something more I can do? It streams ok from the primary router even at low signal, strange. Thank you again for the terrific videos.

Great video, thank you! I have a question: does AImesh work with multiple nodes hardwired to the main router? E.g., if I put the main router in basement, can I have ethernet hardwire backhauls to 2 other ASUS routers (one on the first floor, one on the second floor)?

Thanks, yes that should work fine.

Can I connect the two routers with wire but a switch in between? The switch will have other devices connected to it as well. Would that still work?

The last time I tried it wasn't possible in Aimesh, not sure if they've changed it or not. Thanks.

Yeah, good video, I want my routers connected via ethernet cable, can there be a couple of switches in between? Or does the connection have toe be router to router?

Hi, i have some question. Which option is better? To purchase specific mesh wifi or just buy another supported router with AIMesh?

Great vid. Is there a way to dedicate the backhaul to the wired connection, and therefore freeing up the 2nd 5ghz band?

Hi, you can change the connection priority (in the "more config" tab) to Ethernet. Or maybe connect the secondary router as an Access Point instead of an AiMesh node. Thanks!

in 2:24, you are setting up the secondary as aimesh node, what is the difference in setting it up, as aimesh router? thx

I've just set up the AiMesh between 2 AC68U routers as you have in the video, however struggling with the wired connection as my WAN on the 'node' is a different plug to the LAn and my ethernet cable wont plug into the WAN on the node... Do I need a different cable?

Is your node an RT-ac68u or DSL-ac68u? I can guess yours is the dsl version which has an rj11 dsl port and not a rj45 Ethernet port. If that's the case, you can only connect it using wireless and not wired. Please check out this link: www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1039736/ Thanks

@@Behfor Great thanks, yes its the DSL same as my main router I've had for several years, I'm just setting both up in the lounge, but my plan is to move the 'Node' to the top of the garden to extend the wifi to a garden room... I've got the ethernets connected from LAN to LAN to setup, but I'm guessing that once I move my router out of range I'll loose the AiMesh even though they are hard wired due to not been through the WAN.. Looks as though I've bought the wrong model, I guess the RT-AC68U would be more suitable with a dedicated WAN for my setup? Thank you!
