Yuval Noah Harari, is trying to convey the idea that humanity's progress in information technology does not necessarily equate to better decision-making or a decrease in self-destructive behavior. Harari argues that despite our advancements in gathering and disseminating information, we often fall prey to misinformation, flawed narratives, and our preference for simplicity over complexity, leading to poor choices. He wants the reader to understand that the real challenge lies not in the availability of information but in our ability to discern truth from falsehood and to resist the allure of emotionally appealing but potentially harmful narratives.
@christopherlipowski397Сағат бұрын

Harari argues that much of the information we encounter is not true. He explains that producing truthful accounts requires significant time, effort, and resources, while fabricating stories is cheap and easy. Moreover, he points out that truth is often complex and uncomfortable, while falsehoods can be tailored to be simple and appealing. This disparity, he argues, explains why misinformation spreads rapidly, especially in the age of social media. He cites historical examples, like Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, to illustrate how seemingly ordinary people can be swayed by powerful, albeit false, narratives.
@jjjccc72822 сағат бұрын
Harari emphasizes that information networks, composed of shared stories, beliefs, and values, are the glue that holds societies together. He argues that these networks, more than individual brilliance or even physical resources, determine the course of history. For example, he points out that the United States, despite its deep political divisions, remains unified in its belief in the dollar. This shared story, even if not reflecting an objective reality, provides a common ground for cooperation. This concept helps the reader understand why controlling and shaping information is so crucial for those in power.

Music and art have much more of an impact when you know the backstory behind a specific piece - with AI the backstory will always be "it was generated".
@svadhisthana886717 сағат бұрын
As a musician of 40 years who now uses AI in my workflow, that's not true at all. You clearly don't understand the technology.
@SiimKoger17 сағат бұрын
@svadhisthana8867 So you'd say there is no difference between the real Mona Lisa painted by DaVinci and a perfect replica? When you know which is which. You think the music by Queen would hype up people the same way if the musicians didn't exist, if they were all generated by AI? The piece of art might be exactly the same but what matters is the value we assign to it in our psyche. Knowing that something was made by a human, knowing their story, their pain, their struggles.. makes you relate to them, or question their actions, or question your own life.. it becomes more than just that piece of music/art. Our consious experience is caused by much more than the physicially observable sound- or light-waves.
@svadhisthana886715 сағат бұрын
@SiimKoger: You're beating a straw man. Those of us who are skilled understand that AI is a tool. The music I make isn't completely AI. You're thinking in extremes. You simply lack imagination that art can be made with the help of AI that isn't 100% AI.
@SiimKoger17 минут бұрын
@ I understand it can be used as a tool. However, many people seem to be hoping to write a single paragraph and have the whole thing ready for them with no further edits. My point is that the people who are waiting for the time they can become the next Taylor Swift with a push of a button will be waiting forever as ultimately it's the artist's skill and imagination that matters, not the specific tools, the current artists will get used to the new tools and combine it with their skills and make it better than the people who only lean on prompts.

I think humans have always been of different types, perhaps as a result of evolutionary biology, such that we always have sub-populations of narcissists who seek power and followers who give it to them. And then there are much smaller populations of humans who try to outsmart the narcissists or educate/inform the masses. Same dynamic, same outcome.

Harari doesn't seem to understand that even if people have the right information, hatred, jealousy and anger is one of the most ancient human characteristics and will not escape us. Harari makes a provocative claim that experts in mythology and theology, not those who possess factual knowledge, often dictate the actions of societies. He argues that while scientific and technological advancements require some understanding of truth, motivating and coordinating large groups of people to achieve complex goals relies on compelling narratives, often rooted in myths, religions, or ideologies. This point, though controversial, challenges the reader to consider the often-hidden forces that shape our collective decisions.
