I had a student that everyone called Mayvoot for 4 years, then one day his mom came to school for conferences and we found out his name is actually pronounced MayvLoot. In fact, this is true for English and untrue for Turkish. Because Turkish letters are always pronounced the same way, just like Japanese letters. English has a multitude words that are pretty much impossible to spell correctly without having seen the written word at least once, because a single English letter can be pronounced 5-10 different ways. Turkish has no such words or letters, its letter pronunciations are 100% consistent. Which means the moment you hear the proper pronunciation of any word, you also know the correct spelling, and vice versa. Some people change their names during immigration for sure, but we can't demand this to become the norm. How would you feel if you moved to another country and they told you to change your name to a meaningless, broken, transliterated version of it, because English pronunciation is too inconsistent and difficult? If I don't know how to say someone's name, I ask them. I don't expect them to replace this part of their identity cause it takes a bit of effort to learn. I just put "cengiz" in Google Translate's detect language mode and it told me the proper pronunciation, so there's really no excuse in this day and age.

Because naturally, most people love their names and don't want to change something that's been a defining part of their identity for decades. An American friend of mine would be upset when people transliterated her name "Annelise" to Turkish because it sounded like the Turkish word for "analysis." She felt like the beautiful and meaningful name her mother picked after so much thought warped into a soulless word when people pronounced it so carelessly. And she had every right to ask people to call her by her correct name, because pronouncing someone's name correctly is basic respect. There is no such thing as "sounds you can't expect people to know about" when we live in a time when 5 seconds on Google Translate will tell you the correct pronunciation. As I said before, there is no excuse.

Them not addressing it I don't know for sure but maybe they feel that don't have too or they simply don't want to but we might never know the reason....them deleting comments well tbh I would do the same thing because it just feels like y'all are straight up judging no ones being rude though just judging how they interact but I'm really just trying to see things in different perspectives cuz I understand what you guys are saying but I can understand from her side cuz my own sister, bestfriend, and mom say my name wrong on purpose half the time for jokes or just to mess with me but that is just how we are with each other and when people ask about I just ignore them cuz why does it matter🤷🏽‍♀️

You know, Cengiz actually says in their most recent video that it was a joke and he was teasing them about saying his name wrong. The HTCI team said they're family and make jokes about it. It's become quite easy to cast judgement when you don't know the whole story
