There are only three channels on KZbin that never fail to get me excited when I see that they've uploaded a new video, and those channels are How To Drink, Townsends, and Binging with Babish. Waiting on the Wisconsin version of the old fashioned episode! My favorite WI version is the brandy old fashioned (with of course the muddled Luxardo cherry, orange, and bitters) pressed (half 7up half seltzer) with a Luxardo Cherry and orange for a garnish. Some people take brandy old fashioned sour with pickled mushrooms or even brussel sprouts. So many ways they are mixed here. I was so confused when I went to Florida and ordered an old fashioned and it was not what I expected 😂

Thanks for bring up the Wisconsin Old Fashioned! I am from Wisconsin and have worked in Supper Clubs back when I was a teenager in the 90's. All my aunts and uncles drink Old Fashioneds, especially at Christmas. In Wisconsin if you order an old fashion you order it like so: "Old Fashioned" My favorite is a Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet. The other popular version is Whiskey Old Fashion Sour. I've also seen SoCo Old Fashioned Press. Sweet means to use 7-up or Sprite, Sour means to use Squirt or 50/50. Both use bitters, sugar, some people put a cherry or orange wedge in there, then muddle, then put in your spirit, ice, then either sweet or sour soda. Garnished with your choice of cherry, orange wedge, or even an olive. I've heard the History has to do with Wisconsin's mostly German heritage and their love of Brandy. At the Chicago World's Fair a lot of Wisconsinites went to discover an American made brandy. They fell in love all over again with Brandy. Yadda yadda yadda Brandy Old Fashioned

I do Christian brothers brandy, orange round, 2 neon red Maraschino cherries, orange Angostura bitters, muddle, drop in ice cubes, stir, top of with sprite. Sometimes I put in grenadine but the sprite is usually enough sweet for me. I like the bubbles as well

I dunno, I've always had good luck dissolving sugar in my old fashioned, but I use a splash of water, teaspoon of sugar, and enough ango to saturate the sugar I also try to use as little water as possible to dissolve the sugar, and then add all the other ingredients from the mid-century with the whiskey (my preference is rye) last. Important to note, I use a slice of tangelo where possible rather than a wedge of an orange, and only one luxardo cherry with a drizzle of syrup, and I DO NOT muddle them. I stir it and let it rest to, as our friend Babish puts it "Let those flavors get to know each other."

Wisconsin Old Fashion my grandfather's way: 2oz brandy of choice 2 dashes Angostura bitters Neon cherries mashed a little bit, orange wedge if you like Graf's 50/50 soda (Wisconsin thing) for a sour or 7up for a sweet version Still brings back memories of being 9 years old sitting at his basement bar!

The origin of the term 'cocktail which I've heard (no sources here; it's all hear-say) is that the term comes from the copious garnishes some bar tenders added to their drinks. Some people equated it to a rooster's or peacock's tail, showing off. The idea in this case was that a cocktail was making a drink seem fancier or more attractive, and so entice buyers.

My at home mix tends to be: 1/2 teaspoon of sugar dissolved in 4ish dashes of bitters (maybe more, I love bitters), add a tablespoon of carbonated water and whisk with spoon until sugar is mostly dissolved, twist of orange wiped around the sides and the rim of the glass and whisked in with the sugars and bitters, 2.5ish oz of rye or bourbon (sometimes more... it's mostly eyeballed) then add a big cube and give it a stir

It’s a sad fact that I do almost everything in slow motion, the footage is actually sped up, not the other way around. Doctors are baffled and tell me not to give up hope. This reply took me 90 minutes to write.

I'm loving the fact an ep, on my favourite drink, was released on my birthday. Excellent. ...Now I must go purchase the things in the "improved" drink... and an electric light fruit.

I just recently started adding Orange into my Old Fashioned. Of course.....I just recently learned to make an Old Fashioned. I had read you NEVER add orange or cherry, but I also read you ALWAYS add it. So I decided to keep it simple with simple syrup, Angostura Bitters, and Jim Beam. No ice. Was okay. I wasn't too impressed. I went back and tried it with Old Forester Rye 100 proof, simple syrup, and bitters and ice. Was soooo much better. Needed something. I ended up adding the orange peel 2 weeks ago, and I can't go back. This was a cool little video. Glad I stumbled on it

thats basically what the "mid-century" old fashioned is, except you use crushed ice and top with sprite or squirt depending on taste

@@lxxwj if 50/50 is available, it's far superior to any other "sour soda". Also works pretty well for a Finnish long drink when cut by half with grapefruit juice. Even as my tastes improve, I can't deny Wisconsin's unofficial wedding appetizer.

Still though in Wisconsin if you ask for an old fashioned you'll be getting whiskey or bourbon unless specified

Fun episode! When I feel like something different I use 1/2 oz Grand marnier, 3-4 Luxardo cherries and a spoon full of luxardo cherry syrup, and about 3 oz of Bourbon or 2 oz bourbon and 1 oz rye. add ice and stir. I change it up often though.

I've loved this channel for many moons, but the Townsend's shoutout at 2:30 might be my favorite nerdy KZbin channel crossover moment to date.

A history lesson on what is, probably, my all-time favourite drink. Love it. I approve of your distaste of the mid-century Old Fashioned, too. I actually sent back an Old Fashioned for the first time ever when I was out to dinner about a month ago because they muddled fruit into it AND topped it up with soda water. I'll be damned if I'm gonna shell out 11 bucks for something I can make better at home. They should warn people on their cocktail menu if they're gonna do shit like that. I like to put maple syrup in mine if I'm using bourbon. I think I got that idea from a KZbin channel that I can't quite remember the name of....hey, wait a minute.

I dig the history lessons like this! Let's hear about really old drinks with ingredients no one uses any more! If that's a thing. Haha.

Made the 1860s with Oban for a little smokiness and it was amazing. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much with it having so many ingredients, but it was really good - thanks!

Earlier this year I went to a cocktail making tutorial as part of a friend’s stag do. While we didn’t make an Old Fashioned, I ordered one at the bar after the tutorial. Up to that point, most cocktails I’ve tried (not many) were neckable so a I took a good gulp...and then put the brakes on! Don’t get me wrong, it was great, but it sure had some oomph!

I rarely comment on videos but I enjoy your content a lot, the production, you, the education as well as humour, it's exactly like an old fashioned, comes together to make something great.

From your pours and general sloppiness I would say you were already drunk when you started filming... Its awesome. This must of been a difficult video to film with all the subtly different ingredients causing multiple reshoots. It's fun to think about the behind the scenes that were going on. Great videos love them and your channel

Thanks for this! I've been on an Ol Fashion kick this month. You've given me some new variations to try of my favorite drink. Here's a Northern Sask old Fashion ( not really.. just what I call it as of watching this video) 4 ice cubes 3 dashes of Angostura bitters over cubes 1/2 oz. Traeger Smoked simple syrup (vanilla & cloves) 2oz. Wiser's deluxe rye 1 neon red maraschino cherry Ribbon of orange peel 🥃 drink-repeat
