How To Drink

Күн бұрын

Impress everyone at your New Years Eve party by sabering open a bottle like some Napoleonic Hussar of yore! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Everyone! Today I'm teaching you the proper technique to saber open bottles of champagne, and I talk a bit about the history of the practice. I also play a game I call "Will it Saber?" in which I attempt to saber with various objects around my bar. It gets pretty creative, and I get through a lot of bottles. Several cases of them actually. I also get cut up. It's a good one and it's how I'm closing out 2019! And by the way, THANK YOU all so much for making 2019 the BEST YEAR EVER For How to Drink! This episode is dedicated to you.
If you decide to try this, please be extremely careful. The bottle top flies off with incredible force and will destroy, maim, injure, or kill anything in its path. I'm not joking. Additionally as you'll see here, it's really not so safe for the person doing the sabering either.
Slowly but surely, I'm starting a mailing list so that I'm not fully dependent on YT's algorithmized notifications system. If you'll sign up, I promise not to abuse your generosity, or sell your info to anyone. It's over on the blog right here:

I always come to watch Greg for bar range safety tips: 1 Treat all bottles as if loaded 2 Keep finger off the bottle till ready to saber 3 Always keep bottle pointed in a safe direction 4 Always keep the bartender unloaded till ready to use 5 Eye and ear protection must be worn at all times- -------- He gets a demerit for not following that last one. Drink responsibly everyone in 2020

Hey, this is extemely late and probably uninteresting for almost everyone, but here goes: Objects that 'will saber' should have 2 key qualities. Rigidity and concentration of force. In other words, they should flex as little as possible and have an edge of some kind. These qualities can compensate for each other to some degree but you want both for best effect. The key is to have immediate and high energy transfer between your striking object (whatever it is) and the point of impact (neck of the bottle). Glass is very brittle but very durable. This means that to crack it you have to concentrate as much force as possible on as small as possible an area, in as little time as possible. That's why 'glassbreakers' are designed the way they are. Long story short: Rigid object, edge, 'sabered bottle'.

We'd been trying to open beer bottles with it but after waiting a significant time for everyone to fiddle with the knife, I yanked it out of the guys hand and sabered my cider. As the kind of quiet guy there, I got some good looks as my friend dropped his jaw "Did you just saber a cider bottle with a pocket knife!?" I feel like I became something of a hero that night.

After listening to the physics part of it i am helplessly watching him try with objects that physics dictates won't work. As you said, you are hammering that point in the glass. If you use anything that can absorb the energy instead of imparting it to the actual glass, you will not saber. Basically: 1) Hit the damn point (nothing rounded will) 2) Use something that doesn't bend/isn't flexible (That absorbs the force) 3)Use enough force (you're basically using a lever, if the arm of the lever is too small, you'll reaaaaally have to hit that thing) Happy sabering!

The seam on bottles have changed over the years. Now it works due to the double seams on modern mold bottle production, but back in the day (pre 1870's) the only seam on the bottle would be from where molten glass was attached to the bottle to form the lip. This created a fracture line that probably made sabering champagne even easier. 99% of these hand applied lip bottles that I've found break right there at that junction while modern bottle breaks are less predictable.

Another plus to the half-cage - you can tie a string/ribbon to it when you don't have "safe direction" to point the bottle at. Wrap the other end of the string around the hand that holds the bottle and you will prevent the cork and glass from flying away too far

When the years become an enhanced shitshow fun, entertaining videos come ominous. lol I laugh when I think after two tragedies in my life in 2015 that the years HAVE to be better after that. Always love your content, Greg. You'd be a hell of a guy to talk to from time to time. I mean this with all my heart, I hope you and yours are doing well, and keeping healthy.

Gotta say, I yelled NO NO more than once. My grandmother's sister, so my great aunt, told me that during prohibition my g-great grandfather made beer, and then from the dregs, a really good champagne. She was moving things around in their literal ice box and a bottle of the champagne exploded. That explained all the tiny white scars all over her right arm. The well corked bottle shattered, spraying her arm and the entire interior of the ice box with glass shards and Texas sparkling wine (champagne). Dude, watching, some of those bottles were well shaken before you finished with them. You were scaring the hell out of me. And you will never convince me to drink sabered wine. Shoot, just noticed this was 2019.

I've sabered a few bottles in my career and had one explode in my hand a cut it up pretty badly once. We were taught that if a bottleneck doesn't come off the first time, put the bottle down and fk off cause it's a possible explosive device now. This video was a testament to my anxiety training...

Little disappointed you didn't use a champagne bottle to saber an champagne bottle, but other than that 10/10 video.

Fun fact, 'Champagne bottles' are not originally designed for Champagne. When Champagne makers where having those issues with exploding bottles there was already a nearby tradition which had a long history of dealing with bottle fermented high carbonation beverages, the Lambic brewers in Belgium. That's where Champagne makers found their bottles able to withstand higher pressures, so Champagne is actually wine packaged in a type of beer bottle. Of course later in history Champagne became more well known and for a long while Lambic lingered in near complete obscurity so the bottle type came to be more associated with Champagne and became known as 'Champagne bottles'.

It took me like three tries to understand that it's both the molecular bond and the surface tension that make swords in particular a good choice. The density of the blade is very capable of taking blunt force and distributing energy (continues to push after hitting an object) whereas something like the foot of the barrel does well to take the force of his arm and redistribute it into a tiny point, the wood bends. The energy of a barrel is pushed back into the wood of the barrel instead. Wood - bad Plastic - bad Glass - good, but dangerous Aluminum - bad (poor molecular structure) Metal - good Round - impossible Pointed - risky but will break things Flat and angled - bad Flat and level - good have fun

Fancy crystal champagne glasses work so well because there's no give or flex to them. It imparts the force of the swing on a much shorter time scale than metal so you can get away with just a little tap

I’ve done it with a credit card! The bottle needs to be really cold, and it’s not about force or strength, it has to do with hitting the spot where the lip of the bottle ends and meets the vertical seam, (the weakest spot of the bottle), and following through! Just like a golf swing’ as he said after the second champagne flute attempt.

The thing about the spine of a knife is that it generally has a fairly sharp corner, so you're directing all the force into a microscopic point, very much like how you can shatter tempered glass by tossing a ceramic shard against it. straws and tongs and other random implements have very rounded edges by comparison
