☘️ When I started the KonMari Method 6 years ago I had no idea what I was letting myself in for! Obviously I was hoping for a clutter-free home, but what I got was SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT.
If you've been considering decluttering, or are just starting out, these are some things you need to be aware of.

Isn't it so interesting how getting rid of "external" stuff can have such an impact on our internal lives?
@lisamcdonald2877
@lisamcdonald2877 3 жыл бұрын
And then getting rid of it without regret? Serious question.
@HowToGYST
@HowToGYST 3 жыл бұрын
@@lisamcdonald2877 It starts with getting rid of the "easy" stuff, like trash and things that are broken or you know you no longer need. From there you slowly move on to slightly harder things, but things you know you could easily replace (like most books, for example). Over time you'll build that decluttering muscle and your confidence in your decision-making abilities. If you genuinely think you'll regret getting rid of something, keep it for now. Maybe box it up and put it somewhere out of sight. See if you even think about it again.

Laura when you talked about how your post pregnancy challenges helped reform your decluttering ideas I wanted to share a lil story that happened recently to me. We rescued a baby bird (pink nestling, eyes not open yet) & my world was suddenly thrown into 1/2 hour feedings, changing bedding, researching her needs, etc. My world was turned upside down, in a wonderful way, & it helped me put into perspective what was really important- a lil bird who depended solely on me. She is a fledgling now & I brought her to a rescue where she can intgrate with other sparrows then will be released on 40 acres of wildlife area. Something as simple as a little sparrow has helped me adjust my perspective on what s important- & it's not just stuff! I was sad to see her go but am grateful for what litte Flicker gave to me in return. May seem silly to some, but she made a real impact in my world. 🤎🐦🤎

This is so sweet. It does help to put things into perspective. I sit with my cat on my lap every morning as I drink my large cup of coffee. It sometimes feels like a total waste of my precious time. But I need the time to relax a bit before I start my day. I'm retired, so there is no real hurry. The cat needs, no requires, love and attention too. I used to think her meowing was her telling me she was hungry, but that's not it at all. Her meowing continues after I put her fresh food out. She cries for love and attention. And I am glad to give it to her.

I always wore my old scruffy clothes everyday and kept all my nice clothes 'for best'. This was something my mother did too. Since decluttering, I am generally smartly dressed (most of the time) and know exactly where a few old clothes are kept for gardening, decorating etc. It's made such a difference to how I feel and behave. I'm more relaxed and outgoing now than I was and I've made new friends and tried new things because of it. I still have 'slob' days and I still have clothes and shoes that I love but rarely wear (especially now!), but when the occasion comes along I won't need to dash out to buy a whole new outfit because I have one already planned. Decluttering IS like washing up! Washing up your life as you go along. Thank you Laura I always enjoy your posts x

Great video, thanks for sharing! I started my decluttering journey with a bang in August 2019 and got rid of about 50% of my stuff in a month. Decluttering helped me dig out from PPD too. My son was born with medical concerns in the beginning of 2020. I got the all clear that he's healthy right before the 💩 storm started for the whole world. A year of parenting two kids, living like a hermit, got to me. I understand about depression. I had a mild case when my children were young and I was dieting on a ridiculous food plan that lacked proper nutrition. Depression is no fun. And it can lead to divorce, or even worse. I liked what you said about continuing to declutter to see how far you can go with it. I found, quite unexpectedly, that decluttering makes me feel joy. I never thought I'd say that. I couldn't do the KonMari style of decluttering because my clothes were not just in my closet, not just in the house, but were in the garage, the shed and, more abundantly, in 20+ large tote bins in the backyard. I still have tote bins in the backyard. But not nearly as many as I did have. Here in Seattle, we have drive through lines at the thrift stores just to donate. One day I took in 3 bags of stuff to the Value Village because they have donation bins at the main door. I bought some baskets to help me control the clutter I still have; and when I took the shopping cart back to the cart storage spot, I took 3 more bags with me to put in the donation bins. I felt that I was a bit sneaky about that because having so much to donate week after week is embarrassing. I just loaded my car with 6 small bags and 3 large bags to donate sometime this week. The Salvation Army store that opened sometime during our Covid experience does not seem to have a line to donate and I hope to get there soon. It is so nice to see you smile when you do your videos. Please do keep doing your videos. I learn something new everyday about decluttering and cleaning, painting, crafting and just appreciating a less cluttered house and back yard. If I didn't fit in some crafting and relaxing, I'd go crazy before I would get to the point were decluttering would be an infrequent task. I accept the fact that decluttering, like washing the dishes, will never end so long as I live in my own house and can take care of myself. Who am I kidding, I will probably have clutter in my cabinet next to my old folk's home bed. :)

Everyone has their own form of "clutter" that they can't bear to part with, so I think you'll be OK. 😉 It sounds like you're making MASSIVE progress though! You should be very proud of yourself. I read Marie kondo’s back story and literally thought I was reading my own story! Years of organising stuff neatly but never getting rid of it! I’m a natural hoarder and I get so stressed at the thought of losing an item but I found the less stuff I had the less stressed I was. It was totally liberating and addictive and there’s almost nothing I regret getting rid of.

I'm tired of managing the excess. I want space to do the things I love now and let the regrets go. With minimalism l'm growing closer to finding that sweet spot of having enough. It's fun to be surounded by your favorite things and being able to use them efficiently everyday. As I get older I want less time spent on deciding what to wear, eat, read or clean.

I’m curious too to see where I will be. Im edging towards minimalism (possibly living out suitcase). I’ve spoken before and the last five or so years have been unbelievably stressful including three house moves. If that experience, the pandemic and my poorly mental health has taught me anything it is that family, loved ones, friends and memories are what carry you through those difficult times. Not ‘stuff’ because it literally is just ‘stuff’. I’ve sold a lot on Facebook Marketplace. I realised it could ‘spark joy’ for others and make me money for travel in the process. I also donate too. When all is said and done ‘stuff’ isn’t important. Here’s to the next six years!

Great video, as per usual! We, you and me, went through KonMari at pretty much the same time and all the things you mention have been true for my family too. It’s also made it possible for us to live comfortably in a much much smaller space than most families with kids (590 ft2/55 m2) and thus save quite a lot of money. Now we’ll have to move anyway as we’re expecting a baby girl this summer but even so... I notice how minimalism (not the extreme kind but the family kind) helps us in every single big decision in life. We’re still looking for a smallish apartment. We’ve bought everything we need for our baby and paid very little because we know we don’t need that much stuff, that stuff isn’t what will make or break the first year but having a tidy, relaxing space that doesn’t need much upkeep to stay that way. Not sure if I’m making sense, I’m SO TIRED 😂 Can’t believe I’m only 26 weeks, I feel like 36... I feel we’re two peas in a pod, Laura! Or “of the same scraps and grains” as we say in Sweden (what a weird saying 😅). Much love!

I know what you mean about wanting to see how minimalist I can become. My process got accelerated three years ago when I moved into a minivan, and I still find myself almost constantly going through and finding items for friends or the donation bin. Of course, items are always coming in or needing replacement, so it's a cycle. But I can't help hoping that at some point I'll be down to a robe and bowl.

I happened to have my gift wrap storage bag in the room so I organized it. It only took 5 minutes to get back in order after wrapping my husband's birthday gifts. It is like your red bag, but in grey. I got mine at the Container Store for $20.

Well done! Mine had a busted zip so I decided to let it go and use what I had on hand to store the contents. Worked out well. Glad you got yours sorted too. Why do we always put off the jobs that only take a few minutes to do?! 🤷‍♀️

I just use a long garment bag and hang it on a hanger in my hall closet. I made a mistake of buying two rolls of birthday wrapping paper instead of getting into the bag. I just wanted to wrap my youngest daughter’s gifts without having to grab the bag in my storage closet. Oh well, damage is done. Haha!

40%? I reckon mine has dropped by about 90. All I have to do is get the vacuum out and it’s basically done. I have bad fatigue so this means the world. I don’t face every weekend thinking about what I have to clean. And if someone turns up unexpectedly I don’t have a breakdown. It’s nice and I don’t want to go back.

So much easier to declutter when you have space. I had to shove a house worth of stuff into crappy and tiny 2.5 rooms flat with no storage

Agreed. Having extra space definitely helps. Our home in Dublin was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than this one though and that's where the journey started. 🙂

We've had to do the same a couple of months ago. I managed to get rid of a lot then, but it's shocking the amount you can accumulate without realising, when you have a bigger space! This flat is only a temporary home for us, so my current goal is to keep purging so that the next time we move will be easier!

@@HannahRainbow88 Oh yes, stuff has a tendency of filling up a space pretty quickly, doesn't it? It's easier to keep things when they're not "in the way".
