THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME TO MAKE THESE VIDEOS.! With the price of hockey schools and coaches through the roof kids can save money for better equipment and ice fees while learning skills online. I have been playing hockey for 30 years and still can learn how to develop my game through videos like this. Its good people like you guys who unselfishly give your knowledge to keep the great game of hockey alive.

Thanks! When practicing I recommend pushing your limits as much as you can, reach out as far as you can and really work those edges! Try to get as much power as you can but also don't neglect the quick crossovers. Sometimes 2 fast crossovers will gain you as much speed as one really powerful one, it all depends on the game situation so that's why we showed both.

I've been a hockey fan for a really long time, and this past year I decided to give actually playing a try. I'm a freshman in college, so I decided to take a beginner hockey class they offered at my school. While it made me fall in love with playing the sport and helped me be able to ice skate ok and feel comfortable in gear and everything, I didn't learn much. I really love playing though, so I decided to buy gear this summer and sign up for a local rookie league in the fall. I've been practicing a lot of these videos on my rollerblades, and I went to my first stick and puck the other day, and WOW. Literally these videos are WAY more helpful then the class I took, so thank you 🙏

That's amazing Mackenzie! So glad we could help you out, keep on practicing and playing and you'll improve quickly. Great idea to use your rollerblades as well. We did a rollerblading course on The Pond to show things you can practice on the street that will help on the ice. We also have a few free videos here on KZbin that will help as well.

I'm mostly a beginner except what I've learned from youtube ...a lot from you... and just trying to have even a tiny chance against my 8 year old son in hockey and thought backwards crossovers would help out but be super hard to do. However, as always, you make the hard stuff seem easy! Put together backwards and crossing over... so simple but I never thought of it like that! 2 hours on the synthetic ice in my garage after the little man went to sleep and I've got it!! You rock! One way better than tbe other, but can't wait to see the look on my little man's face when I bust out the backwards crossovers at puck shoot tomorrow! 😂

Shooting and stickhandling are the two things that you can work on a lot at home. You need a spot to shoot and stickhandle so sort that out first. Once you have an area set up try to dedicate at least 30 minutes a day to practicing and improving. Make yourself a schedule or checklist to stick to and you will notice improvements very quickly

I love the way these guys break this down into manageable capabilities. While I can't yet do a backwards crossover, I can still skate backwards in a circle and work on the push to the inside. When I've got that, then I can easily see adding the crossover. I can really see the progression from component capabilities to the final skill and imagine how I'm going to get where I want to be. Thanks!

Yes you are right about the c-cuts, the legs should be doing all the work, stay low, don't bob up and down (another common mistake) and dont zig-zag. In this video though we are focusing on the backwards crossovers, we just showed the c-cuts quickly as a base for performing the backwards crossovers. Also it's not "wrong" it's just not the most effecient method of the c-cut

Teach me.. Got any personal tips to add? Dominant foot right, I can only do an inside edge t-stop. Max speed, 11mph 😅 can forward cross over on both weak and strong sides, tight turn to the left is OK, to the right I struggle where to put my weight, can c-cut backwards about 12 feet before I feel I need to turn around, lol.
@JSawmill63
@JSawmill63 6 ай бұрын
@@romahnae I’m no expert but here we go:p 1. Ensure skates fit great. Minimal toe box space, no space around the ankle, laces tight all the way up (tight up front, snug across top of foot, tight as can be going up the ankle. 2. Time on ice. Every time you skate you’ll get better 3. Strengthen ankles, hamstrings, quads If you arent gifted in these areas hit the weights 4. Good solid knee bend. Try to have a 90 degree angle at the knee or close to it anytime youre striding/ working 5. Chest up eyes up. Look to where youre going. Looking down will eventually pull your whole upper body down and you’re throwing off your center of gravity. So deep knee bend, good wide hockey stance, and chest up. 6, make sure those skates are sharp 7. Relax the ankles. You want to always have an edge on the ice. Relax your ankles and trust your weight. Keep that center or gravity. When youre crossing over is when you really want to flex that foot down as you follow through each stride. Like if you were kicking your leg straight behind you and using your toes to point at something. Going backwards comes down to having a good center of gravity and working those edges with those C cuts. C cuts dont necessarily have to be big and the better you get the quick and smaller they become. For backwards cross overs… think of them as cross unders. Youre pushing out with one foot while placing the other foot where the other just was. Look up videos on cross unders. The biggest thing is… time. You are going to have moments where you realize you’re starting to figure it out.. and with confidence comes a more aggressive and fun time when youre out there skating hard. Dont tell yourself you cant get something because all these things start to click eventually. It takes a lot of time. Never stop watching videos. Most of all dont quit bro.

@@romahnae also totally get what youre talking about with the weak side. I have that same issue. That will come down to you having discipline and taking the time at practice to work on that weak side.

I never played hockey but I went skating every Friday/Saturday for social skate when I was a freshmen. I couldn’t believe how easy I took to skating. I loved it so much! I started staying late to practice. I found a pair of used vapors in my size at an expensive goodwill in my city. Got them pro sharpened at my local pro shop and molded. I couldn’t afford all the gear for hockey so I ate up the few days I could skate. I still shock myself in how fast I understood it. Fun stuff. Just practice. Practice, practice, practice. It’s as easy as that. For a dude from Louisiana all I did was PRACTICE. it’s fun af because (and this is weird for older skaters) just practice.

Hey I have a quick question. I've just gotten into Backwards cross overs and I'm getting better at them. However, I've noticed that on various videos some people recommend lifting their outside leg (like your video) while others never have it leaving the ice and they kind of just swivel from a C cut into in a crossover. Right now I'm doing the swivel method and I'm wondering if this is detrimental to performance or if it's more a matter of preference. Great video by the way, really helpful!

I find it much easier to teach the backwards crossover starting with an outside foot c push only, progressing to an outside foot c cut/then crossing over the inside foot. The outside foot does not leave the ice. After they have those 2 steps mastered, then incorporate the inside foot reach and pull. The outside foot does not leave the ice, it does a continuous s motion, while the inside foot gets picked up, reaches and pulls. Need to stress that knees need to be bent and it is the body is in more of a chair sitting position. Been teaching it that way for 30 plus years and it works.

Im not Howtohockey, but it sounds like you are describing the difference between a cross over and a cross under. Cross over you literally lift your outside skate over the inside. During a cross under, your outside skate remains in contact with the ice and your inside leg kicks under and behind the outside leg.
