This video is an absolute no nonsense guide to the real skills guitarists need to develop. I use this exact same philosophy with my students. If you don't already apply guitar practice in this way, start today. This is gold. Great video Mike.

that was great, but i still don't know what specifically to practice. I have no idea what kind of exercises to do for technique, or any other aspects.

This is simply the best overview on what playing the guitar is as a "complete entity" I have ever heard. I wish so much I had heard this 30 years ago, so I could have known then what to aim for in my playing. My playing never really improved back then so I gave up. Who knows, maybe the next 5 years will blow my first 5 out of the water. I even wrote out your main points, and hope to build a practice regime around them. Thank you Mike!!

First you should have millions of subscribers. I've only been playing 6 months. I never wanted to play like steve ray Vaughn. So i didn't pay much attention to technique. And i found ways around my weaknesses. Now i want to do more. Now i have to relearn all my scales. I had flying fingers. And it was fine for what i wanted to play. Now its not. Do yourself a favor learn it correctly the first time. Save time and frustration. And do everything this guy say. I improved within 30 minutes. No joke. And thanks dude. No frills. You're a really good teacher.

You cover a lot of good points! I've been playing, practicing, learning as well as teaching guitar for almost 40 years.... and there's still stuff I want/need to learn. I work from a personal library of books and dvd's that I've accumulated over the years. Also spent time taking lessons with some great teachers. Nothing can replace a good teacher. An interesting book I've recently been working with is "The Musician's Way - A Guide to Practice, Performance, and Wellness" by Gerald Klickstein. There's a companion website for the book too. On the subject of practice time I'd suggest the dvd - "Maximize Your Practice With David Liebman - Effective Practice Techniques for All Serious Musicians". It's good to work on expanding your musical knowledge, concepts etc. You don't have to confine your studies to strictly guitar related material (imho), but don't neglect it either.... Guitar IS a unique instrument in the way it's laid out, tuned, and has it's own groups of techniques. Depending on one's style, direction, and approach will demand the type of picking techniques you decide on approaching.

Hey, I read the article “How To Practice Scales…” that you link to from this video. You say NOT to follow the CAGED system and that using that system will be “…forever limiting your guitar playing creativity in very severe ways” and that it has “crippling musical restrictions” Umm… Guthrie Govan and Rick Graham (amongst others) teach the CAGED system. Obviously they teach plenty of other stuff too, but they are hardly players with crippling musical restrictions!

Mike Philippov, I'm a "Month Old Player" but I'm 55 years old (on June 22).I don't want to just play my favorite songs. I want to know my guitar backwards and forwards, able to play anything from Spanish Guitar, Classical Guitar, Blues, Jazz, etc. Yes, one day I'll write music. But I'm a long way away from that. But every journey begins with a single step. I have quite a few questions though,,,

Can You Make a Video On Scales??&How They Work??
@ChaosoneX9 жыл бұрын
Is it because of playing other people's songs that a lot of creative works tend to be more lackluster? Because I notice that plenty of people that can play songs by Slash or Jimi Hendrix, but when it comes to original material, they're generally "soft" for want of a better word.

Hi Mike, This video is very useful. Thanks for it! The one area which I think most guitar players tend to neglect is ear training. This is an area which i always neglect. I knew that it was one of the most important areas.But I had no idea on how to start training your ears, where to start,etc. So I started doing "Ultimate Ear Training for Guitar and Bass [Gary Willis]" but stopped after sometime as it got very boring. Do you have any video that explains in details how a guitar player must train his ears, where to start and how to start ? Thanks.

I am really eager to learn guitar.. Just started to learn by watching on many videos.. My big problem is that I don't have the timing or rhythm ... How will I know how many beats on particular songs.. Even on singing I don't have the timing..:/
